Title: Rack mount case? Post by: Steve on February 15, 2011, 01:17:09 PM Can any recommend a good&inexpensive rack mount case for mining? (one that can obviously be well cooled).
Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: lianho on February 21, 2011, 05:59:08 PM hello Friend.. this will surely help you. Few months ago I purchased rack mount case from south-pak.com .. these are too good. you can visit here.

Post by: Steve on February 23, 2011, 06:47:04 AM Ended up with one of these: http://www.directron.com/cs4801.html?gsear=1 (http://www.directron.com/cs4801.html?gsear=1) (Seems very similar to that codegen 4U-600)...had to remove the 3.5" drive rack to make room for the GPU card, but I didn't need it anyway and it's better without it since it was between the fan and the GPU card.
Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: Jazkal on July 12, 2011, 01:59:08 PM google codegen, see their 4U-600 cases. I use them, good stuff. Do you have any pics of what your rig looks like on the inside of this case?Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: sabe on July 12, 2011, 02:57:09 PM None of the 4U rackmount cases I've seen are space efficient at all unfortunately.
With a standard 4U rack you can easily fit 2 motherboards (with 4 cards each) and 2 PSUs if you just leave them on a tray. Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: Jazkal on July 12, 2011, 03:59:57 PM The whole point for a rack mountable case, is so you can mount the cases in a rack. I want to be able to mount 10 4U cases in a rack. You can't colo motherboards on a tray.
"space efficient" Who cares about space efficiency? The only thing that really matter for mining is cooling ability (IMO). Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: NetTecture on July 12, 2011, 05:12:30 PM Trying to colo with a rack will kill yiou price wise. Seriously ;) Colo power is not cheaper than at home. On top, most colo do not hadnle the power usage. FOr example my Colo is limiting me to 20 ampere per regular rack ;) High power racks go to 40 - for 1500 EUR a month for the actively cooled rack. Power extra.
THink you get flatrate? Sure... for like 250 watt power consumption for a case. Nice, but not suitable for mining. That said we are just planning a 5 rack units case for 6 cards, possibly 10 (for a long version). Availability within 3 months. Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: kirax on July 12, 2011, 08:48:46 PM I have read of some people using these:
http://www.frontierpc.com/components/computer-cases/chenbro/rm41300-fs81-rackmount-enclosure-rm41300g-1019095720.html Made to house tesla's. Now, the price seemed terrible to meat first, until I read that it includes a 1200W PSU. Now I wonder how good the PSU is, as I didn't find any specs on it. Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: BitcoinRigs.com on July 13, 2011, 01:18:54 AM We use Chenbro cases in our server farm. They are good quality cases. Get one without a power supply. I recommend this model:
http://www.frontierpc.com/components/computer-cases/chenbro/rm42300-rackmount-enclosure-1019095721.html Our racks include 3x 20-amp circuits. That's enough juice for about 10 systems per rack. Cooling is provided by a Cold Aisle Containment setup like this: http://i.cmpnet.com/informationweek/1221/figure2.jpg Cold air in the front, hot air out the back. Title: Re: Rack mount case? Most data centres allow you to colo non rack equipment on steel trays. Considering that you're paying for space, of course space efficiency is important. I pay half the price per rig when I squeeze 2 rigs into a 4U rack. Cooling ability in a DC? Just let it rip with some 5000 RPM fans and not worry about the noise. It sounds like you haven't thought this through carefully. Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: kirax on July 13, 2011, 04:44:24 PM We use Chenbro cases in our server farm. I mean, the 1200W PSU for that price in a decent case would be pretty awesome, but that depends on it's quality, of course. The Chenbro you linked only seems to have 7 expansion ports on the back, how easy is it to "modify" to accept 4 GPU's? Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: shotgun on July 13, 2011, 05:34:30 PM I'm not in a colo but I do have a rack in my garage. I'm using these 4U cases from NewEgg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219019 Note: the pic of the rack is prior to loading my mining rigs. Maybe I'll take a pic of it later, but the rack is mostly full now. If you're in SoCal and need a rack, I can get you these Sun ones for $250 including 220v PDU C13. https://i.imgur.com/KL5Lch.jpg https://i.imgur.com/VnELMh.jpg https://i.imgur.com/qmywPh.jpg https://i.imgur.com/v9VWqh.jpg Title: Re: Rack mount case? Don't buy if you run more than one card. Cooling is KING! Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: snedie on July 14, 2011, 01:23:57 PM Well if he has his rack in a basement or unused room there is no reason he couldn't slam a 5k rpm fan in the front and one in the back. I'd search on ebay for some of the metal fans the old HP servers used to use, those things never break down (had one running in a data centre for over 6 years solid, never been turned off).

Thanks for the link I think I remember the fans you're talking about. I had a large Compaq DB cluster box (where two servers were combined with attached SCSI storage) that had big black metal fans inside. I just picked up some more of these Deltas. 240cfm for only ~60dB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835213001 Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: fitty on July 15, 2011, 01:09:35 AM Is it possible to use risers in the pci 1x slots in a 4u case? I've never seen a 4u case in person so I have no clue how big it is. I understand you can fit big cards and most cpu coolers, but is there enough space to mount cards on a riser somehow?

If you look at this picture of my 4U case you will see that it is not really possible to do so unless you managed to rig up some kind of card holder but even then you only have about an inch or so between the current(stock) level of the cards and the case lid. If you go with single slot 5770 or 6870 cards you can do 4x density in a 4u case with a Sapphire PureBlack MB like the one here. https://i.imgur.com/v9VWqh.jpg Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: NetTecture on July 15, 2011, 04:01:34 AM I personally dont think this isefficient.
I am just getting drafts for my own custom case design that will: * Carry 2 motherboards, 4 PSU, one behind the other. * Be 5 Rack units high. * Be totally optimized for airflow * Carry 5 (!) cards per motherboards on extension cables. The goal is a 40 double wide cards per rack design ;) Setting up some mining operation at the moment - I order teh stuff half rack wise (40 cards) and I dont want to spend too much for rent. Rails - probably now, bu tthen you can buy some metal rails for rack cases. I will put up drawings and pictures as I get them. The specs say 100 cm deep, 19", 5 RU ;) So, it is perfect for 16 systems per rack ;) Custom made, as I said - price indication is around 200 EUR ;) Title: Re: Rack mount case? Title: Re: Rack mount case? Post by: NetTecture on July 17, 2011, 05:28:13 AM Rackmount cases normally cost more - they need more stable material than normal once.
I get one for 12 cards in hopefully a week. On 2 boards, behind each other. That is 12 dual slot cards that live on extension cables and are decently switched :) 5 units high, cost around 250 USD.
