   I try to get something relevant to my wifes hobbies. It shows her I know her interests and keeps her busy while I'm coding/trading/mining.

It depends what your wife likes and what she does professionally. You can then get her something that will be useful to her or something that she likes. If your wife loves to travel, you can gift her a vacation with a substantial amount of spending money. If she likes shopping, take her on a shopping spree, so she gets to pick what she wants. If she is a housewife then maybe you can give her a 'day off' while she pampers herself and you take over all the chores. Good luck man!

Wake up earlier than her to make her breakfast and feed the kids. Treat her to a spa for a massage, scrub, wax, etc. Have her go to a hair salon and have her choose anything she wants to do with her hair (Cut, trim, wash, treatment, perm, straighten, dyed, etc) and pay for it. Give her some money to go shop for new shoes, bag, make-up, clothes, jewelry, and maybe video games? And while she's busy doing all that, make sure you do the laundry, groceries, take out the trash, clean the house, walk the dog, take them to and back from school, make sure they do their homework and keep them outa trouble before putting them to sleep. Then get yourself cleaned up, put on clean clothes and take your wife out to her favorite restaurant for dinner. Order her favorite meal for her. Get her favorite bottle of wine. Ask about her day. Talk about things she's interested in. Listen to anything she tells you. On the way home, walk with her if it's not too far (and if she doesn't mind walking). Let her talk some more. Lend her your coat if she's feeling cold. Hold her hand. When you get home, prepare her bath. Lay with her in bed. Cuddle. Thank her for being there for you and kiss her good night.

I'm sure she does a lot of things for you and your family while you are busy at work or w/e you do every day. So give her somewhat like a day of R&R and assure her that you have everything taken care of. Because, after her birthday, your wife will pretty much be going back to her normal routine. Essentially, do anything and everything that you can think off to make her feel secure and appreciated.

Knowing what she loves and doing it for her will make her the happiest. Like for those who do not cook and if something you can learn and make it will just be the best gift for her. Travelling is always on cards as that is something which just helps you take a break. Watch, shades etc are some of the other stuff which depending upon the need and interest could also be given.

Buy anything with expensive price tag even if it is really not going to be useful in our practical life still girls will become happier when they get expensive gifts. Or something romantic like candle light dinner along with a diamond ring would be best of everything.
