Title: Reply from Wikipedia: "Currently 'monitoring bitcoin with interest'"
Post by: SonofPegasus on November 29, 2013, 06:45:57 PM
Wikipedia is making another push for donations, so I e-mailed them yesterday telling them that I would love to donate if they accepted bitcoin.  Here was the response:

Michael Beattie, Nov 29 09:10 am (PST):

Thanks for your email and for your suggestion. We are aware of bitcoin, and we will continue to monitor it with interest. Thanks again for taking the time to email us.

Sincerely,

Let's all send a quick e-mail to throw our support behind wikipedia's acceptance of virtual currency.  It takes a minute and could go a long way.  I plan on responding that I appreciate the consideration and will be making a small donation in the meantime.

What's the e-mail address?  I'll tell them I will donate $10 as soon as they accept it in bitcoin.

If everyone just takes a minute to e-mail this could be the biggest media pump yet!

They have that email as an auto-reply when bitcoin is mentionned for quite a while now I believe.

Maybe - but we can just write BTC or virtual currency or whatever.

The fact is that even with an auto-reply they will know there is a growing push for them to accept BTC, and this will only speed up the process.  They clearly have a team dedicated to fundraising and love $$ as much as the next non-profit.

Regardless, a 10 second e-mail does not hurt!

Emailed.

I hope they will get the hint.
It's kind of silly since so many people might donate if they just get btc.

Wikileaks. Wikipedia is stupid for not accepting 'em. Do they not want free money that'll probably've doubled by the time they get around to doing something with it?

Obviously anyone is monitoring bitcoin lately. Wikipedia lost a great opportunity during the early early days to benefit greatly from bitcoins.
Well it is never to late and it will be good pr anyway  :P

Time for me to send Wikipedia an email:

Quote
$1,000 USD Bitcoin Donation to Wikipedia

I'm well aware that others before I have written you fine folks about accepting bitcoins as one of your donation options. I fully expect to receive the same auto-response reply they have gotten in the pass.

But, since I represent Bitcoin 100, I want to declare that once Wikipedia starts accepting bitcoin donations, Bitcoin 100 will send a $1,000 USD donation in BTC to any Bitcoin wallet address provided under your control, predicated that funds are still available, of which currently we have $163,475.59 in our coffer as seen here: https://blockchain.info/address/1BTC1oo1J3MEt5SFj74ZBcF2Mk97Aah4ac

If or when a decision is made for Wikipedia to start accepting donations in bitcoins, please consider using Bitpay (https://bitpay.com/) as your payment provider, whereupon you'll never incur a processing fee.

I'm from Sandwich, Illinois, currently in Pensacola, FL, to help a Bitcoin-accepting NPO, Sean's Outpost, with their Thanksgiving at Satoshi Forest endeavor to feed the homeless. Once I leave here, I'm heading to a two-day Las Vegas conference to raise a million dollars via strictly bitcoins for the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund.

As you're well aware, Bitcoin is now a force to reckon with and, sooner or later, the major NPOs and NGOs worldwide will be accepting bitcoins to not only increase their fund raising drive efforts, but lower their cost as well when doing such.

Allow me to share with you something I found on the internet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_adoption_lifecycle. Clearly, Wikipedia can be an "Early Adopter" or a "Laggard". It's your call, but we at Bitcoin 100, along with the Bitcoin community, hope you wisely choose the former and lead the way for all other NPOs/NGOs to follow in your footsteps, oppose to you wise folks following in some other's.

Sincerely,

Seriously. It'd be a total win/win. I'm sure the goals of Wikipedia matches up with the ideology of a lot of bitcoiners. They would get a lot of bitcoin donations for sure.  And then bitcoin gets another high profile organization that accepts it as currency.

I've seen other threads on this forum where people are literally wanting to throw their BTC at wikipedia. I don't know why they can't just donate with cash, but eh.  :D

I have donated cash for the past few years.  I feel that witholding my donation for a bit could spur their acceptance of BTC.  Why not add another major site that accepts BTC?  It just makes sense.

In the end they will still get money from me....  They always do because I value their service, however, I might value it a BIT more if they would take BTC rather than fiat.

 ;)
