Title: Need to educate, time to sell bitcoins by the bit? (0.00000001)
Post by: Interized on November 30, 2013, 01:31:22 AM
Why aren't we selling bitcoins by the bit yet?

Do you have to have 1.0 btc to "have bitcoins"? NO. You just need a bit!

Need a bit?

Got a bit?

Yeah I bought a bit for $1 each.

What?

A "bit" is already in use, a dictionary word in fact, and has been for decades.

We are trying  to educate people not confuse them. Conversation would be:

I've just bought a bit.
A bit of what?
No ... a bit.
You mean 1/8 of a byte???
No .... 0.00000001 of a bitcoin
How much of a bitcoin is that?
0.00000001
Sorry??

etc.
etc.

:)

Ain't ain't in the dictionary. (oh wait it is)

Words get removed added and changed all the time.

People understand bits of gold, and they will catch on to bits of bitcoin.

Regardless I still call 0.00000001 a bit.

And I always will.

Exactly my point, most people will end up calling it bits because that is what makes sense for todays world.

Alternative meanings hold no ground in the ever evolving constantly changing human languages. (just like bitcoin and everything else)

I'm so grateful to the inventor of bitcoin, he's (they've) brought so much good into this world.

...but that's a shit name for 0.00000001.

It's too many syllables.

Calling them Sats or Naks would roll off the tongue easier.

Bits are catchy nice and make sense vs even those names.

What?

0.00000001 is a satoshi
a satoshi is 0.00000001

end of..

if you want to mention "bits" then make a bit 100 satoshis or 1000 or 10,000 satoshis.

dont confuse people anymore by trying to rename something that has already been known and accepted by the major part and percentage of the community.

i truly understand you one day want to have your 'famouss for 5 minutes' moment by being able to tell your grand kids that you named an certain volume of coin as a 'bit'. but please, dont reinvent the wheel and attempt to name it something else.

choose another amount to be known as a bit

Removed from what? I've never heard of words being removed from a dictionary or language. Why would that ever happen?

Read the reddit thread posted. Bits is a good word, but we seem to start get some traction to use bits for 1 millionth of a bitcoin, ie 100 satoshis. If you are going to use the word, please use this convention, or people will just get even more confused.  :)
