Title: Hey bitcoiner, how OLD are you?
Post by: ohiofarmer on November 30, 2013, 03:33:44 AM
In another thread, someone mentioned that he knew of a 17-year-old who started buying bitcoin at 14 cents... That made me wonder how old people are on here? Mostly young people? I'm 33...

I'd say that the mix is about 70% young people (17-30) and 30% older people, as I feel that Bitcoin has a tendency to attract younger people with a more open mind and attitude. Conventionally, older people have trouble adapting to new paradigms hence why I'm leaning on a younger average bitcoin population.

Where's that put you? Older? Younger?

I'm guessing this forum's probably skewing older than something like Reddit, too.

I'm 29.  People here are so damn smart, and such good writers, that I always imagine them to be 30's 40's and 50's.  But I'm sure a good percentage is 30 and under.

I'm 25.  Wish I had bought a ton back when they were 50 (when I first considered buying).  Only reasons I didn't buy was because they were so hard to get (no real place was selling them, and most online places felt like scams).

you should create a poll with age ranges. i'd be interested in learning more about the BTC demographics.. we had another thread with a poll of male to female ratio and it was 9:1, as in every 10 people there are 9 males here.. sample size was over 100 people.

my guess is that it's male, and disproportionate number of people under 30..

Hah, well, after 18-19 years of straight schooling, I honestly wanted time off before the high-stress environment of law school. Writing my thesis was bad enough; it's a relief to have an 'excuse' to justify, at least to myself, taking the time off, while I consider the explosion of the virtual currency industry to be a complete windfall. All of us are ahead of the curve right now, and if we can leverage it right, it has the prospect of paying off in spades. We're probably in late BBS-era Internet right now.

Age 56

I was a gold & silver nut till just a few months ago. I have a background in computer programming, economics, and mathematics. Self-educated, when I was a kid, I read almost every book in the non-fiction section of the city library. After I read a serious article about bitcoin, I realized that it was going to change the world. Other people my age just can't seem to grasp this new idea though.

After thousands of years, automobiles made horses obsolete for transportation.

Now, after thousands of years, Bitcoin is making precious metals obsolete as a store of value.

I love science & technology. Glad to be alive at this time in history.

Early 50's.

Like the Internet, at first use tended to be the twenty somethings, computer savvy, and then suddenly quickly adopted by the larger community.

I am thinking the average age may be rising, not so many young people have a thousand dollars to buy with.  Bitcoin certainly has captured the imaginations of a wider variety of people from all walks of life this past year or so.

22, though I've been told I'm "old-at-heart." (in older age, this seems to've replace the more euphemistic "mature for my age.")

I'd guess the final euphemism, "old-at-heart," will be replaced by "bitter old bastard" once/if I hit 40. At 60, I'd guess the only question left would be "why aren't you dead, yet, you emotionally-crippled piece of shit?"

Anyway, I feel I should follow the "haha, I'm serious" joke with a lighter one.

Q: Why do old people claim young people think they're immortal but then go on to say "'whatever-age-you-implied-was-old' isn't old"?
A: Because everyone's full of shit. We're all already dead and just waiting to realize it.
:D

It’s not too rewarding; I can’t get BTC in ways that take a long time or require shipping, etc. because of school, and my parents have associated bitcoin with crime, since they heard it on CNN with the Silk Road shutdown. And those rates -_- less BTC for the same amount of money... :'(

18. Unfortunately used the wrong bank account to do my trading. Suntrust closed my account which since it was still a joint with my mom and my brother messed up theirs too. Should have switched over to my individual account quicker. At least I can pay them back/justify the trouble of switching banks with that 1000% return.

I strongly believe that the VAST majority of Bitcoiners are GenY (21-35)

It's the generation who suffered the most by the endless economic crisis & cost of living pressures in the past decade, many their youth years entirely wasted under the currency economic system. Naturally GenY had to look elsewhere.

It's surprising how many people are older than you'd expect on this forum. Considering the old adage, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks," it's pretty encouraging to see all ages learning about bitcoins.
