Bitcoin / BTC / SHA256 - http://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet
- i know a guy who bought 62 btc worth of ixcoin and had he just kept his btc's.. lol
- tip: If you don't mind having Java installed use Multibit instead of the normal BTC wallet client.
- WHY ? because the official Bitcoin wallet's block chain is like 12 gigabytes or something like that last i checked
- and if you use Multibit it works in a new way so you don't have to download anything almost.. turn it on and your synced, always.
- Armory is listed there to but i think it's a hybrid online wallet of sorts and i advise all users to avoid online wallets if they can.

Litecoin / LTC / Scrypt - https://litecoin.org/
- people love trashing on LTC and they have great points but it's entrenched and is actually in use across the globe unlike 98% of other coins.

Franko / FRK / Scrypt - http://www.frankos.org/
- well hey its' franko ..what can i say.. go look it up.

Securecoin / SRC - Dev = baritus - http://securecoin.org

- This is what Quark should have been.. this coin is Quark modeled after Bitcoin with an extra fair release by an experienced coin dev.
- First to use a combo of new algo's with Quark and so far there is no GPU miner that works on pools publicly.              

Quark / QRK - Dev = Max Guevara - http://www.quarkcoin.com

- Same algo as Securecoin. Released fairly by a good dev.
- Special miner programs needed to mine QRK and SRC. The only two coins that use a special combo of hashing algorithms.
- Like SRC it's mainly a CPU mining only coin.

Primecoin / XPM
- Unique algo coin made by a well known experienced coin dev.. rare..

Off the top of my head these are my top 5 that came to mind with out giving it any thought at all.
I will add some more though..

also i will add some more info on this shortly.. such as what algo they use and some links to source topics, pools etc to get new guys going quick.

i don't care what you all want to post here but try and help the new guys please.

i'm adding little bits of info i found to be useful and i hope that helps others cut through the clutter :)

and my only gripe with Quark is it has been mined heavily and there is a LOT of them out there
there is a reason why the price of them is far lower than SRC.. supply and demand.
saturate the market they will never be worth that much etc.

I have to disagree here. The SecureCoin developer literally changed a few lines of Quark code, whereas Quark developed the unique 9-round hashing algorithm and a new coin distribution model, whereas SecureCoin just stuck to the Bitcoin model.

Baritus even admitted he's not a good coder :P

@Rick Storm - you can't disagree.. because i agree with YOU hahahha

all that was needed was to change a few lines of code.
and modelling the release and reward after Bitcoin is a very good thing.
Securecoin was started at very low block rewards and was gradually increased over time.
Many other coins do the opposite.. why is that ?
Regardless of what one is better they are both good i just think Securecoin is more promising and has a brighter future.
but.. i will list Quark too and provide links etc ;)

iGotSpots has honestly worked a lot on supporting the coin(s) he has released.
far faaaar more than the vast majority out there.. we have not gotten along historically but that is not relevant

Your advice on Multibit is invaluable though. It really is awesome.

Protoshares / PTS is going to get added to and i will be nice lolol
regardless it has a unique algo etc so it stands out from the pack.
