Title: DMD: is it worth it?
Post by: alt-fan on November 30, 2013, 07:09:25 PM
Does anyone has any experience with Diamond (DMD)? It's very rare, i think only 200,000 coins or so exist, so it has a huge margin to increase in price.

I see difficulty has jumped from 0.05 to 0.40 and price on cryptsy also multiply 20 times!

Plus new pools are coming out (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=353396.new#new)!

And profitability compared to bitcoin is like 3,000% (according to coinwarz.com).

Looks interesting  ;)

Any ideas???

I have no idea.

However, it looks interesting to see 3000% profit. Will check it and come back and reply you with my opinion.

I am mining with one 7870 card (250-280 Khash) and I'm getting 6 mBTC per day, which is A LOT more than the 0.2 mBTC that I'm getting when mining for BTC directly.

I started to mine to convert to BTC, but the price keeps climbing so I'm sticking to DMD instead!  ;D

Hope this helps you.

Diamond is a really interesting case of altcoin! Many ppl believe in it.
"If BTC is gold and LTC is silver, then DMD is, well, DIAMOND!!!"  :)

Some basic DMD facts and statistics:
- DMD is an ASIC-resistant scrypt coin.
- It combines proof-of-work and proof-of-stake, providing excellent resistance to 51% attacks.
- No pre-mining!
- It is super scarce: only 4.38 million DMD will be created in eight years. Linear creation means early users do not have an unfair advantage (no block reward halving ever).
- Block time is one minute and each block contains 1 DMD.
- Every day, 10 random contain 2 DMD (bonus blocks), 3 blocks contain 8 DMD (super blocks), and one block contains 30 DMD (super+ block)!
- Difficulty re-targets at every block.

I downloaded the wallet and waited until it synchronised. But in the bottom it still says Checkpoint too old, please wait for block chain to download or notify the developers. Is that normal?

By the way, price is still looking good   8)

Based on its current price and the value it may have in some time (who knows?), you can lose very little and win a lot.
So yes it is worth it.

About as worth it as real world diamonds, if you know what I mean.

I don't know whether it will ever be worth as real world diamonds, but it used to be priced at around 1 cent (in USD fiat) and it's now at 80, even after correcting after the recent frenzy in all cryptos. That's not a bad gain at all!

Hopefully with the recent takeover, it'll be able to establish itself as a serious alt competitor. Then, it'll be worth many dollars (or BTC!) soon.

I guess it's not really resistant to 51% attacks after all. Sorry you're probably having a tough day.

According to this topic the blockchain is forked and they are working on a fix. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=255806.560

Do not mine this coin until the new client is released and blockchain fork fixed. Otherwise all the coins you mine will likely be invalid.

Updated to forkfix!:
https://github.com/palmd/diamondcoin

Forkfix win client (must download new chain to use!)
https://sourceforge.net/projects/philosopherstone/files/DMD/

Instructions for new forkfix client: (Windows)
Make sure to clear directory of old chain, peers, everything except wallet and .conf file.

Start new client and wait for sync
then solo mine
done.

Make sure to delete old blockchain files (except wallet and .conf) or you will cause another fork!

Miners?

Pool up and chain fixed

test out the low difff

I think what Hazard meant was that real diamonds aren't actually worth squat but you're free to pay for them what you want and many people indeed do. DMD was delisted from Cryptsy... Probably a good idea to stay away for the time being at least (although if you feel like gambling there may be some cheap DMD relative to recent prices should Cryptsy relist it).

Its a temp delist because it was badly forked, was resolved earlier but everyone will need to upgrade to get off the dead fork
