New myself so pinch of salt
Think it means all the transactions that have ever taken place, they need to be on record in every btc client

Is it the first time you have installed the Bitcoin wallet on your PC?

Here's the official FAQ where you question is answered: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/FAQ#How_long_does_.22synchronizing.22_take_when_the_Bitcoin_client_is_first_installed.3F_What.27s_it_doing.3F

Bitcoin-Qt initial sync can take a very long time to complete. You should make sure that you have enough bandwidth and storage for the full block chain size.

You may take a look at Multibit, Electrum, or Blockchain.info online wallet, if you don't like running a full node.

It is downloading the blockchain,
The last transactions it downloaded are from 65 weeks ago , and depending on your internet speed you'll be fine in 24 hours the worst case.

Thanks all. How big is the blockchain? FAQ didn't say (obviously it changes)

Seeing as the entire bitcoin forum was re-allocated for a few hours today, and these are the geniuses building the thing... um no I am not putting anything online until I know a whole lot more than I do now. But I will check them out all the same, thanks.
