Title: So Is The Forum All Cool And Secure Now?
Post by: LostDutchman on December 02, 2013, 04:13:49 PM
This sort of thing is why I advise people to stay as far undergorund as possible in their dealings in cryptocurrency.

Mods and Admins did a great job of getting things put back together though!

My $.02

I'm going to have to come up with a separate password for each Bitcoin based website now because of all these attacks going on :(

You should be doing that regardless.

Look like the forum is all nice and secure for now. Who can tell it would not go down again some time in the foreseeable future?

In my defence, I do already keep my financial and business set of passwords completely separate from my community stuff, just surprised at how much Bitcointalk has been attacked lately.

This. You really can't be too careful, especially when there's cryptocurrency involved.

Actually, you should have a seperate password for every account not only Bitcoin based...

And a ridiculously strong one for your bitcoins/banks etc. Dictionary words and birth year ain't gonna cut it.

Most bank websites in the US actually forbid strong passwords. The strongest I've ever seen is maximum of 12 characters, only letters and numbers allowed.

Typically you're restricted to 8 letters and numbers only.

Suppose that's not too bad. Most peoples' passwords will probably be less than 10 characters anyway. Is there a maximum amount on bitcoin wallets?

These 'hackers' are just gunning for your hero, donor, and VIP and mod and admin accounts. Everyone else is worthless. Perfect for me.  :)

I'm not sure this is entirely the plan though, maybe they just want to harvest passwords and try link them with wallets etc. Surely somebody would spot the abuse very quickly. Hopefully those kinda peeps should be immediately alarmed when they're asked to log in again without signing out.

Dear God I hope you are kidding but if it is sarcasm it certainly fooled me. That's the stupidest thing I've read this month but December is young, bring on the sheep.

As bitcoin grows in value and because of the internet nature of the currency attacks will happen again for sure. And bitcointalk is among the first targets along with exchanges and online wallets.

Using a separate password for every site is the best solution to avoid such hacks it seems but then the user might forget one of them or more but still it will secure the accounts from hacks and even better if google authorization is used.

Forget about the sarcasm - the point is that you should never reuse a password. No exceptions.

If you're not using some kind of password manager to generate a unique, random password for every website you're going to get burned sooner or later.

This is an amazing statement. It needs to be repeated.

NEVER use the same password for any two websites, no matter how safe they seem.
