Title: What is the safest way to hodl tokens?
Post by: macryptosh on May 05, 2018, 11:12:52 AM
Hi Everyone.

I need advice about hodl tokens. I bought some tokens from different ICO projects. And I received tokens in MyEtherWallet. Those tokens are based on Etherium(ERC20)

Here is a question. Where is the safest place, or the safest way to hodl those tokens? Since DNS server for Myetherwallet has been hacked, I don't feel it is safe anymore.

Any advice?

Thanks.

Try using hardware wallet such as trezor or ledger wallet. It is safe in hacking because you hold the device that hold your wallets and tokens. Investing a small amount of penny on a hardware wallet is worth it , mark my words :D

Ive been using my ledger wallet in almost a year and I dont encounter any problems with it.

I still believe MEW is one of the safest wallets. Just keep in mind how many users use it. Or buy a hardware wallet, it is best probably TREZOR.

Try using hardware wallet such as trezor or ledger wallet.

This answer, just use the hard wallet in combination with MEW and you'll be fine. They're not the only wallets out there, but probably the most well known (trusted). Ledger will set you back about 80 Euros, and the Trezor (base model) about 10 Euros more. Both are very straightforward to use and well worth the initial layout for the security and peace of mind they provide. Both support a large number of altcoins, just check the websites for details.

https://shop.trezor.io/

https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/ledger-nano-s

KeepKey and CoolWallet are another couple you can check out if you want to make some comparisons.

I'll add to confirmation and suggestion of the rest.

Go for hardware wallet and that's with Ledger Nano S.

Personally, I think it's cold storage. I use Tresor's purse, which I keep in the safe. So no one can steal coins. Online wallets are often attacked, so I do not advise anyone to keep it there.

Thank you for information. Actually I use Ledger nano S for XRP and Bitcoin.
But I don't know how to use the ledger nano for tokens.
Do you know any good web or blog to explain how, so that I can try that?

Thanks

Definitely hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor. Once you will have a bigger amount of tokens in your wallet, you should buy yourself one of those without a doubt. You will sleep better knowing your coins are safe.

safest way to hodl tokens is  to use ledger wallet and trazor wallet. keep your tokens in ledger wallet or trazor wallet.
take care that hardware wallet should be original.

i find that mew is not safe since some of my friends lost their funds in mew so i never prefer to keep funds in mew.
also there is no 2fa in mew & private key can be hacked so it is better to use treasure wallet always.

you never actually store coins or tokens or anything like that unless you are talking about some weird altcoin which you obviously are not. what you are storing are the keys (private keys to be exact) so the safest way to store them is to use cold storage.

you go offline and create a new wallet (more precisely a new key) and store that offline like printing on a paper. and then send coins/tokens to that public key. whenever you want to spend you just go to that offline place and make your transaction and only broadcast it online.

and as others said you can always pay money to buy a wallet (hardware wallet)!

For token, MyEtherWallet is the best place to keep your coin or token. If you want more additional security you can buy Hardware Wallet or make Paper Wallet.

I would like to share with you that I'm from distress before cause I've phished. I don't noticed the difference of legit site and counterfeit site. First you should be more careful, notice every link you visit everytime you want to enter your private key. You are responsible for your own security.

it all depends on which steps you will take, holding it in the short or long term. and if it's in the long run try to keep it in the hardware wallet but if you plan to keep it in the short term I think you can keep it in exchange.

If you're going to have a MyEtherWallet, please use MetaMask or ledger to secure your wallet. Even though you use another type of ERC20 supported wallet, it is still possible that you can get hacked because you don't have this security measures. Any wallet is vulnerable.

When i get ico tokens in my eth wallet, i give them to my blockchain wallet. Because blockchain wallet is safer than eth wallet.

for my own I usually store the tokens that I can in Myetherwallet because it is safe enough to then hold long enough about 4 monthly because if we directly sell it then we will get little advantage because token far from ico price.

I do believe that people behind MEW already fixed those problem and they will continue to update the system to bring us the best security options. Holding your tokens on MEW will remain safe but you can use other wallet like metamask if you are still worried with the previous issues.

myetherewallet is a safe place to hold your token, the hacking issue last time has been resolved already, but if you still doubt about the security of mew, you can use metamask, or maybe you could buy hardware wallet like trezor or ledger nano.

If you feel MEW is not safe to protect your token you should try Hardware wallet because this is more secured wallet in Crypto platform. But I suggest MEW is more than enough to maintain the tokens because more than 30 percentage of the users are use this wallet.

You can buy and use a hardware wallet to a safer Ethereum and Token wallets. However, if you don't want to release some money, then go for the Metamask. It is a sub part of MEW, but is more secure. Since, you wouldn't enter your private key. That will be harder to hack. But, even I use private key in MEW. I don't just use or input my private key often. Since I mostly just checking my balance, and ETH address will suffice.

If you don't want to hold your tokens in myetherwallet maybe you should use hardware wallets like ledger wallet your tokens will be 100% safe.

Metamask is a good wallet to store erc20 tokens because they been doing this for long time and most of customer satisfy with that wallet. For mobile, i suggest to use Eidoo wallet because they have sercue and easy for using wallet.

as I know
not the dns server of MEW that has been hacked. but dns from google that use number 8 and so on.
Until now I have no problem when I do not use dns from google.

If you are planning to hold those ERC20 tokens for long term, the safest way when to store those are in hard wallet like Trezor and Ledger Nano which are the most advisable wallets. If you can't afford buying those, you may use an ERC20 wallets that you own your private key like MyEtherWallet, Jaxx, Coinomi, Parity, Metamask and ImToken. So far, the wallets I am using and trusted the most are MyEtherWallet, Jaxx and Coinomi. Just don't put your private key on any of your devices. Right it down on a paper or save it to an external hard drives that is only exclusive for your altcoins.

Hardware wallet is safest way to hold tokens for long term.you can go with Trazor hardware wallet, It is best hardware wallet as per my personal experience and you can also store ERC20 tokens in this wallet. Trazor hardware wallet is the best hardware wallet to protect your coins from hacking.

If you are planning to invest into ERC 20 tokens for the long term, you should seriously consider buying a ledger Nano S hardware wallet to store all your ERC 20 tokens safely, it could also be used as an hardware wallet to store your bitcoin and many other popular altcoins too.

There are many different ways to keep your coins. Most common one is probably myetherwallet , it's a website in which you can store your coins online. Another one is hardware wallets and then exchanges. For me safest way is to keep them in a hardware wallet.

IMO, I think you should transfer the ICO token to ETH and then hold it long term by storing it in a hardware wallet like Trezor, Ledge Nano S, which is safe for the amount of your crypto prevent from being stolen by hackers. I think it is now the most reliable way to protect cryptos.

I propose to buy Trezor. As for me it is one if the better way to hold cryptocurrency. Also you may buy Ledger.

Calm down, mew is safe for now. You better get a hardware wallet such as trezor or ledger nano and then linked it on your myetherwallet account for a better protection against exploits but if you just cant afford to buy a hardware wallet then you can try creating a metamask account.

As people before me already stated, purchase a hardware wallet (Trezor or Ledger are the most popular choices) and transfer the tokens to the ETH address of the hardware wallet. You can still access MEW via the hardware wallet and be completely secure (as your private key doesn't leave the device).

MyEtherWallet is still a wallet that is safe. in the case of many emerging about MEW lately, I think not because the system is wrong because MEW is certainly already had a good protection. Phishing became one of the reasons the number of MEW who hacked and this depends on how we use it.

In my opinion, Myetherwallet is safe to store tokens, provided that when opening Myetherwallet wallet on the official website, because nowadays a lot of fake Myetherwallet sites, if we are not careful when opening it, then all tokens in MEW will be taken by others.

You can try to run MEW locally to make sure you will not get pissed by the scammer by hijacked DNS again soon. Try to never publish your important data.
The only best way for you to use the paper wallet or metamask and before you will able to open your fund and it will be adding more password to encrypt your money.

Keep your tokens in another digital wallet so that you could not access anytime for just keeping it and if ever you will sell your tokens then that would be the time that you will trade it or sell it. So create a multiple digital wallet one for the exchange of your tokens and one used for holding tokens. This should be done in order to avoid being phished by hackers out there. Or if you need to keep it safe you can have cold storage like paper wallet that support token or desktop wallet will do.

I agree with you. This is easily the best and safest way to HODL your tokens and coins in this market which is ripe with cheaters and scammers. I have personally been attacked by hackers several times in the past and they have always failed since I know how to secure my coins. I usually use my Trezor hardware wallet to store valuable coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum etc and utilize desktop and paper wallets to store less popular coins like DeepOnion, IOST etc. This strategy is easily one of the best strategies to secure your money in this market and I advise everyone not to store your coins on an online exchange.

Pretty good strategy which I agree with and am using myself at the moment. I tend to store my valuable coins in my hardware wallet(Trezor) and I store the rest in paper wallets. I note down the private keys related to these wallets and store them safely for higher security. I make backups in case anything goes wrong in the future in order to secure my hard earned money. Hardware and paper wallets are the best way to secure your funds op.

All ways to protect information about purses depend on how often they are planned to be used.
The best option is hardware wallets. This option is justified with a sufficient amount of funds in these wallets.
The second option for long-term investment. For example, one time to acquire crypto-currency assets and forget about them for a long time. Just hodl. To do this, you can create an encrypted disk file (using Truecrypt, Veracrypt, etc.), multiply this file and save it in different places for fault tolerance. The password can be reliably recorded and saved on paper, in different places.
The third option for periodic use: a virtual machine on the computer. For a virtual machine disk, backups are periodically created. It can also be encrypted, since it is a regular file. It can be stored in the cloud, having access from anywhere in the world.

On the other hand, you have to be careful when handling your coins and secure your computer using an antivirus too.

It's only the DNS server that hacked, not the ethereum blockchain, so it's still safe to hold your tokens on my etherwallet. Me myself, still hold my tokens on myetherwallet and never had a single problem until now. If you want more safety maybe you can try a hardware wallet like trezor.

myetherwallet is still a wallet that is safe to use. hacking happens only because of user error on its own site in phishing scams. for users of wallet could be careful with what they access. then their wallets remain secure.

The crypto is the only thing to do for the hodl tokens in the money world. At this time, the market is depreciating. If you do not want to hurt, wait. The tokens seem to appreciate as they wait for this time.

I think that myetherwallet remains the top choice for many people, Hacking issues are indeed a very dangerous thing. But when you can secure the best way to access your wallet then it will be much more important. Myetherwallet is the best wallet I've ever seen and I think we can maximize the use of myetherwallet as well as possible.

If you have substantial amount of portfolio then use ledger hardware wallet. always buy from official sites and try avoiding buy from third person. there have been cases in recent months that people got scam.
Don't put all your holding in single place. use multiple options to secure yourself. offline pc/mac , hardware/paper wallet etc its little slow and long process but believe me it will surely save your investment if something wrong happens someday.
And if you are using only MEW then double check every link you are clicking while surfing. its painful in starting but totally worth it, you will get used to it. limit your uses of torrent for downloading free stuff. Avoid downloading porn. licensed antivirus software is must.
