Title: Bitcoin mass adoption
Post by: notung on December 03, 2013, 02:31:20 PM
How to help bitcoin consolidate as a currency?

It comes to my mind a few things but the most important ones are:
- Have some cash in one exchange (fiat). Each time we need to buy something online, try to find a place we can buy it in bitcoins. Then we just buy the right amount of bitcoins and we purchase the item. For this I would suggest to have the cash in exchanges like btc-e where the price per bitcoin is lower than mtgox/btcchina.
- Tell everyone (friends/family) to use it. Help them to create wallets and teach them how to use them.

Any more ideas? How can we help bitcion adoption?

You can also ask the merchant to start accepting Bitcoins
Bitpay got A lot of plugin, so merchants could adapt quickly

https://bitpay.com/bitcoin-for-ecommerce#plugins

Start your own Bitcoin something (store, exchange, info channel, tell F&F)

You could buy more bitcoins, and buy goods with them.
And ask if they accept bitcoins. Even if they don't accept them or they don't know what a bitcoin is,
They will have a chance to learn.

paying with bitcoins, both on the web and especially in brick and mortar stores should become more common and more easy.

It should be as easy as paying with credit/debit cards.

In fact, it might be a good idea to make 'plastic bitcoins' in other words a credit-card shaped card with an encrypted private key on the chip that gets decrypted through a PIN of 4 to 6 digits. obviously this is much less secure than a paper wallet or digital wallet, so the address (anyone who steals your card and has the hardware to read the chip could bruteforce your PIN and then decrypt you private key), however, obviously you shouldn't put large amounts of cash on the key that is related to the bitcoin plastic card.

For example if you carry $50 dollar in your wallet normally for shopping you'd put $50 dollar worth of bitcoins (~0,048 BTC at current rate) on the address that matches your card, and when you go shopping you insert your card like you would with your credit/debit card and insert your PIN. your transaction would be verified by the bitcoin network (hopefully in some secure and encrypted way) and instantly be send to an address of the store. Very much like credit/debit cards, except the store almost instantly get their money (so the store is happy) and the transaction fees are much lower (so the customer is happy).

This should not be hard to accomplish, and probably would increase the mainstream usage of bitcoin a lot and therefore bitcoin price will rise.

I suppose the best method would be to convince businesses to accept bitcoin.
I often get the impression that bitcoin is still 90% about speculation while there's barely a real bitcion economy.

Give mBTC to friends and family and show them how to use it and where to spend it. Be an evangelist. As big as BTC is these days, most people either haven't heard of it or think its a pyramid scheme - its our job to educate the people in our lives.

This is the most important thing to do in my opinion, I gave some to my brother and father a couple of months ago, they've been very happy that it has risen so fast.
I also regularly order pizza's for the family and paying for them with Bitcoin, I have some savings in a secure wallet and also some spending money in an active wallet.

Spend all your money in bitcoins

Best way would be to try and spend bitcoins , you spend 100$ worth of bitcoins and get back that amount from the unspent $.
This will encourage shops to adopt bitcoin as a payment gateway.

even though bitcoin will be covered more in the media because of the market price skyrocketing, mass adoption will only really take off once bitcoin is easy to use.

we should support efforts like http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1459210729/nio-card-a-smart-card-which-upgrades-your-phone-an and such to get bitcoin accepted by the masses.
