Title: Buying Litecoins with Bitcoin
Post by: adam9317 on December 04, 2013, 08:24:30 PM
Personally I see a better short term future for litecoins so I am going to invest in them.

I currently have some bitcoins at bitstamp, do I have to use them to buy litecoins or can I use USD to buy litecoins?

Thanks very much

You can use those Bitcoins, but you will have to transfer them to an exchange that supports Litecoins.

https://btc-e.com/
https://www.cryptsy.com/

Are two popular ones I have read about.   You can also use USD if you'd like and the exchange supports it.

just a warning, dont use USD deposits on bitstamp, too many people had issues i personally know someone who did. if you're using them using BTC to buy litecoins

It will be 10 times easier to deal with cryptos only. Withdraw your bitcoins and trade them in btc-e or cryptsy for litecoin.

I actually haven't bought any bitcoins yet, but I was just about to buy them off bitstamp.

So should I just buy directly over btc-e?

Also what do you reckon the future is like for litecoin

This is a good question for me too. If I plan on dealing in LTC to start, should I buy directly LTC? Are there less hurdles to jump through? And from which exchange?

This is how I would do it:

1. Buy Bitcoins at https://coinbase.com/ (https://coinbase.com/) (takes 4-5 business days and goes by the market rate of when the check clears.. uses echeck)
2. Send Bitcoins to your https://btc-e.com/ (https://btc-e.com/) account
3. Trade for Litecoins
4. Send to cold storage (https://liteaddress.org/ (https://liteaddress.org/) or a physical litecoin ;) https://www.cryptovest.com (https://www.cryptovest.com))

Don't store coins on the exchange. If you don't want to use cold sotrage, store them on your computer and make sure your wallet is backed up and encrypted & your anti virus updated.

This has been very helpful, Thanks

I have downloaded a litecoin wallet onto my computer, would this work as cold storage?

Also are you able to send btc from bitstamp to btc-e?

Thanks very much
