Title: The first reported tweet about Bitcoin, how did MtGox look 5 years ago and more.
Post by: ofirbeigel on December 05, 2013, 04:22:19 AM
Today's post is completely a "feel good" post. Meaning, you probably won't learn anything new from it, but it will make you feel good. Some of you who are in this forum long enough will probably even have a better insight than I do on what is written here.

As Bitcoin prices continue to roller-coaster endlessly I thought this would be a good time to look back at where Bitcoin was when it just started out.

Using the Internet's "Wayback machine", Google search and various tools to explore Bitcoin's past

So what I did in order to travel back in time is use the Wayback machine which is basically an Internet archive to see how several of the biggest Bitcoin websites looked when they first started out. I also used advanced Google and Twitter search tool to find out what where the earliest mentions of Bitcoin online. So let's start out by comparing the biggest site of them all Bitcoin.org.

Bitcoin.org 31st January 2009

If you want to get a closer look you can just click here (http://web.archive.org/web/20090303195936/http://bitcoin.org/) and browse the site as it was almost 5 years ago. The domain Bitcoin.org was registered on the 18th of August 2008 and the first siting of the site was about 5 month after that. Luckily the site today is a bit more accessible to the general public.

MtGox.com - what does MTGOX mean ?

Probably many of you know this, but the domain MtGox.com was originally intended to be an online exchange for the card game "Magic: The Gathering". That's what MTGOX stands for - Magic The Gathering Online X-change. Here is an actual screen shot from May 2007 when it was still supposed to serve that purpose.

http://bitcoinwithpaypal.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Screen-Shot-2013-12-03-at-11.16.02-AM-2.png

I wonder if they're still waiting for that patent...

Around 4 years after on February 2011 I found the first screenshot of the MtGox that was used for Bitcoin exhcange. Below is how it looked in the early days:

http://bitcoinwithpaypal.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Screen-Shot-2013-12-03-at-11.24.52-AM-2.png

Again you can click here (http://web.archive.org/web/20110203031942/http://mtgox.com/) to browse the full screenshot. Amazing how this website progressed in the last 3 years as Bitcoin became more and more popular.

Not too long ago people use to give away Bitcoins for free

Around 2010 a coder named Gavin Anderson bought $50 worth of Bitcoins (10,000 BTC) and started giving them away for free just for kicks. He called his site "Bitcoin Faucet". This is how the site looked back then:

http://bitcoinwithpaypal.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Screen-Shot-2013-12-03-at-11.27.30-AM-2.png

This was on July 3rd 2010 when he only had 750 BTC left (you can see it on the left side). A month after he reduced the amount given to 0.05BTC for each visitor - probably because he was running out of Bitcoins. On September 2012 the amount decreased to 0.02BTC. Unfortunately around October 2012 the faucet was closed....

First ever recorded Tweet about Bitcoin was on January 11th 2009

The user who tweeted it isn't very active on Twitter. Here's what he tweeted:

http://bitcoinwithpaypal.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Screen-Shot-2013-12-03-at-5.25.48-PM-2.png

Very exciting I know...

Last but not least, some funny blog posts form the past

So to start off I'd like to invite you the "Bitcoin parity party (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2734.0)" which was a celebration scheduled for when Bitcoin was to hit $1. This was on January 11th 2011.

But my favorite forum post is the one where someone gives the following advice:

http://bitcoinwithpaypal.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Screen-Shot-2013-12-03-at-5.29.52-PM-2.png

This is of course just for kicks....no pun intended for the writer of the post.

Well, that's enough nostalgia for today. Hope you enjoyed the ride. Maybe in 5 years someone will look on us today and make fun of the fact that we think that 1BTC = $1200 is crazy....I for one, certainly hope so.

Don't make the mistake of selling at $1200 when it can still reach $10,000 and more.

If it can go from .005 to $1, it can go from $1 to $100, and now $100 to $1,000.

How can someone say it is impossible to reach $10,000?

Yes.

I sent several bitcoins just the other day for free.

No fee at all.

Aged coins do not require fees.

If one bitcoin is on one address for a full day, then it can be sent without a fee.

Half a bitcoin would have to be on one address for 2 days to be sent fee-free.

2 bitcoins could be sent after half a day, etc.

more info can be found here: http://bitcoinfees.com/

The twitter post is the amazing Hal Finney.  He "isn't very active" on twitter because he has Lou Gherig's disease.  He worked on the code early on with Satoshi.  His story is quite amazing:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155054.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155054.0)

Ah, this takes me back.

I never really got involved with Mt.Gox but the other shots here are familiar.  I received my very first bitcoins from the faucet.  You didn't need to give an e-mail address, just solve a captcha.

My favourite has to be the old bitcoin.org trade (http://web.archive.org/web/20100722094556/http://www.bitcoin.org/trade) page, particularly in comparison to the current (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade) version.

Thanks for explaining that. I had no idea.

Awww...this is such a vintage and cute thread, so makes me wanna be there at that time!

I knew about the mt gox meaning!

Damn I wish I claimed 5 btc back then!

It's unlikely many of us would have known about BTC back then because absence of it in news. Only verbal discussion between nerds (& friends of nerds) back then

It was still at 5 BTC at the time of this Slashdot story (http://news.slashdot.org/story/10/07/11/1747245/) (2010-07-11).
