Title: Pain to buy bitcoins in UK
Post by: macrococoa on December 05, 2013, 11:38:49 AM
New here. Learning about bit coins and wanting to make use of them.

In the UK it's pretty difficult to buy coins, and it's expensive as 20% VAT is applied. This is a pain. I don't want to spend tons of money if it's not going to be useful, and now that it's worth so much apiece, it's difficult just to see what all the fuss is about.

I'm looking to scrape a few mBTC together and try it out - after that, depending on how the experience goes, I might invest further. So far, 25¢. Hooray!

So, anyone in the UK managed to buy bitcoins?

You can buy directly from some local guy there who owns bitcoins, from localbitcoins.com (https://localbitcoins.com/?ch=q22) and skip the VAT altogether  ;)

I discovered ages ago that the UK is very unfriendly to people who want to legitimately buy Bitcoins, it may be better to buy something and then sell it to people for Bitcoins that way which would also gain you some trust in the community rather than directly purchasing them with paper money. Depending on how much you want to put in you could purchase gold from elsewhere and trade it for Bitcoins, Bitcoiners tend to like precious metals quite a lot especially since it isn't as easy to trace or tax as the current methods of trade.

How well does advertising work?

Thanks for the tip on selling services, I'll take a look at the forum.

I had a look at this, but couldn't find anyone viable near me, or even in the UK at all for online trading. If you're using the service, any hints on finding sellers?

Yes, the UK seems pretty unfriendly to other currencies in general. Thanks for the tip about items, and gold in particular. I'll look into that.

There must be others in the same situation as I am, and hopefully I'll find some in the forum sindelar mentioned.

Just use localbitcoins. That might as well free you from the 20% vat.
