What is Datacoin? Datacoin is both a reliable and decentralized data storage service and a currency to pay for this service. 2. Where my files are actually stored in Datacoin network? Files are stored on local HDDs of all users participating in the Datacoin network. Each user has it's own full local copy of all Datacoin files. 3. Are my files encrypted in Datacoin? No. You are responsible to encrypt your files before sending. 4. Is there any way to delete my data from Datacoin blockchain? No. Once data goes into Datacoin blockchain there is no way to delete this data. 5. Why Datacoin doesn't handle file names and any other details about my files? Datacoin daemon works with blobs only. This is because it must be a reliable software. Any additional metadata must be strictly verified and this code can lead to bugs. Bugs are bad. But no special rules are required for blobs except of size verification. There is a upper level protocol (Datacoin envelope) that handles file name, files bigger than 128Kb, file updates and compression. You can follow Datacoin envelope development here: https://github.com/foo1inge/datacoin-browser Datacoin envelope doesn't need any modification in Datacoin daemon and Qt wallet - JSON RPC connection is enough. 6. How much disk space does it take? 1Mb (max block size) * 60 minutes * 24 hours * 365 days = no more than 513Gb per 1 year 7. Is this storage free for storing data? No. Currently fee is 0.05 DTC per 1Kb of data. This standard fee can be changed in future without hardfork. 8. Sender pays fee and who gets this fee? All fee goes to miners i.e. fee is distributed between nodes supporting Datacoin network proportionally to their mining power. Fee from fully loaded block is about 50DTC (block reward now is ~11DTC and it decreases). 9. Does the whole concept mean that it is tough to go for Android or IPhone client? Mobile clients need light wallets in order to see balance and send transactions. Light wallet will interact to some web service instead of storing full blockchain locally. 10. People really need to store more than 513Gb of data per year in decentralized storage. Do you have any plans to increase storage space? Datacoin is a root storage engine in the decentralized storage service. This storage is both reliable and expensive. I'm now working on concept of personal chains. Personal chains will start from root Datacoin blockchain and will be replicated to nodes by subscription (nodes can choose chains they subscribe to). Datacoin blockchain will handle only identification and some metadata for all personal chains. Important notes: - This (personal chains) is only on conceptual level now and will be clarified and prototyped in few months. - This doesn't mean Datacoin hardfork. Personal chains will be constructed on top of Datacoin network. 11. What is current state of Datacoin project? Datacoin network [reliable and expensive blob storage in blockchain] - up and running Datacoin envelope [file storage in blockchain] - under development (Perl prototyping) Personal chains [more data outside of blockchain] - on conceptual level 12. Who is working on Datacoin project? oocook5u working alone at network for now. He didn't accepted yet anybody into development team but he plans to do this in the future in order to make process more sustainable. What about coins per year, actual block reward and total number of coins? Coins number is limited to 2 billions. Anyway, current block reward is near 10 DTC per block, what is equal to ~5M Datacoin per year, and this block reward is getting lower when difficulty increaseas. So this limit can be reached only after hundreds of years. Neither ypool nor beeeeer don't want to add DTC: ypool - for unknown reasons (jh00, its admin, just sait 'no'), and beeeer admin (xolokram) said that he has no time now for supporting one more coin. There is a lot of technical questions in them, a lot of ideas, offers, promotions, etc. And rather few posts about price pumping - before there will be enough services based on Datacoin, there is no matter in trying to increase price a lot. Once this is setup you will be able to trade DTC without commissions or fees using the standard ripple wallet's trade page.
I am new here, but am very active within the ripple community and have the support of Ripple Labs. Assuming that we can get a nice launch of DTC, there should be some nice press releases about this and that can only help with the popularity of DTC. The following document explains the basics of ripple https://ripple.com/ripple_primer.pdf I will do my best to make the whole ripple signup process as smooth as possible, but it hasn't been automated yet. I will be working on adding DTC support to my automated market maker so there will always be a competitive price quote for DTC within ripple. Since this is being done on a volunteer basis, there are no commissions being charged, no fees. Totally frictionless trading. The price you see in the order book is what you get. In order to trade on Ripple, you will need a ripple wallet, which you can get in 2 minutes from https://ripple.com/client/#/register You will also need 20XRP (~ $0.50 USD) to activate your account, but in order to make this as easy as possible, I will be sending the 20XRP to any account that deposits more than 10 DTC. Only once per person please! What we will be trading is DTC issued by maxsolnc himself. I will simply combine all the DTC deposited and send it to him, he will then send me the ripple DTC that will get distributed. Once you have the DTC within ripple, you are ready to sell it. If you want to simply purchase it, you can do it without doing any deposits if you get enough XRP and there are plenty of ways to do that. To redeem your DTC, you can simply convert it to something else or sell it on the order book. If you want to receive the actual DTC, you can redeem it by returning it along with your DTC address and you will receive the DTC. Ripple is a bit more complicated than most systems, but the advantage is that once we get a real market going with DTC, we will be able to automatically convert it to any currency within ripple, including BTC, USD, CNY, etc. using the send command. Transactions take a few seconds, and it uses a distributed ledger, so no centralized exchange that is vulnerable to a Ddos attack. I will post more details as we get closer to launch. We will start with a small scale beta test and depending on the response, I might even start working on automating the whole deposit/withdrawal process. I know that is what everybody really wants. At current rates, we are only getting a linear increase of around 10,000 DTC per day. Assuming we don't hit some sort of prime chain sparsity wall, that is a growth of at most a couple million coins per year, and possibly less. As i understand the idea it will be one time upload of all the comments that have been written on that twitter. I like the idea cause we need to do something to promote the features of Datacoin. Please, can you post some guide for compiling this? I'm not able to do that under Ubuntu 12.04. So, here is very simplistic guide. It works on debian. I don't have ubuntu but since its based on debian, it should work as well. sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install git build-essential g++ libboost-all-dev libdb++-dev libgmp-dev libssl-dev libminiupnpc-dev git clone https://github.com/g1g0/datacoin-hp cd datacoin-hp/src make -f makefile.unix Please don't skip cloning the git repo even if you've done it before - there are some fixes I pushed last night!!! The GUI was not the objective - to be honest I did not even try to run it. So, after updating the conf, run the datacoind in the terminal, and communicate with the running process via the same binary, providing it the commands in the command line. So - the the basic info you can get by executing: datacoind getinfo To get you address: datacoind getaccountaddress "" The "" asks for address of nameless account, which is default. If you want to take the time to set up a build environment, you can start taking a look at this thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=149479.0 It's meant for Bitcoin and it has just been updated to the latest version so you will have to scroll down for an older version of Bitcoin (the newest uses QT5 instead of QT4). Overall, it details the steps to take to have a working building environment. BTW it could be a good time to include the latest OpenSSL patches (to protect against the 0-day heartbleed bug).
