Hey guys,

I just want to mine some Coins with the Laptop I have here. 3 years old, wasn't really high priced in this time though, so not really a good one.
But i want to mine some Coins, and my question is which Coin is the best to mine with this setup?

It should be traded against BTC on a exchange like bter.com

Hi, i too would be intrested in hearing a reply regarding this. I have a very old laptop (6 years at least) and would like to know if it is even viable for mining. Thanks in advance

I am a newb, so I don't think I should be giving advice. However, I will say that I mine FTC with my dell xps i5 laptop. I started mining LTC at first, but was discouraged at the amount of time it would take to just get one LTC. Although in today's market they are worth less, it feels good to be able to make a couple coins of a legitimate alt-currency.

maybe try the primecoin mining wich use the GPU?

Do not mine on your laptop, unless for educational purpose how it works. You probably can only CPU mine

Just saying, I'd check if your laptop is well ventilated to begin with.
I'd at least put an external fan beneath so it won't overheat.

Primecoin is CPU only for now, but that is an advantage for a laptop.

CPU only, likely, from the sound of your setup. May kill your laptop for little to no gain.

I have not heard of a case where a laptop CPU has been overheated in years. The recent Intel CPU's tend to be very reliable. I have had some fun with mine for months, and nothing bad has happened so far.

I have to agree, the laptop motherboard is much likely to be damaged by heat, especially when you mine in summer

The Core i7 in my Alienware would disagree with you in regards to the overheating element, although that is obviously not a common scenario :)

I have it running on 2 threads (every little helps), and it stays below 80 degrees most of the time. If I tried 4 or 6 threads, I'd probably reach 85-100, and 8 would probably force a shutdown. The 7970m running at the same time probably doesn't help...

My VERY old laptop, for kicks, I also have mining litecoin. It's useless for any real-world usage (I think the disk is near-death), but the CPU still runs fine - a Turion TL-52, which is a shame to waste. It's currently putting out a little over 2 kh/s, which is pathetic - you definitely want to target a CPU-only coin, like Primecoin, as previously mentioned by others.

Mabtc is right, this will kill your laptop (cooling system is never good enough) and you gain dust with laptop's hashrate capacity.

Unless you truly are doing it for educational purposes, you will need a fairly large investment to get in at this point. The competition is fierce and getting more difficult by the day as bitcoins have been gaining notoriety.

Im not trying to discourage and still think you should try it out. Just realize you will lose money using your laptop, in electricity if it doesn't explode.

Of course Bitcoin is out of range for laptops. I think we were discussing Primecoin.

Overheating depends very much on your laptop's cooling abilities. My Clevo can handle 100 degrees for months, so I always run 8 threads, even overclocked!

Is anyone making a profit mining Primecoin on a stock consumer computer? I guestimated that it would require a lot of power to make it profitable. Am I wrong? I hope so...

Probably best not to mine with your laptop. It will ruin your machine and you won't get anything for your trouble. Contact me for some other ways to get some Bitcoin !

We have a small group mining on a variety of laptops (quite a few are MacBook Pros running MacMiner). They're not running full-time, nor are we looking to do much more than earn enough to learn and participate.  I'm yet to hear about problems from anyone, but will make sure to ask around and let you know what our experience is.

Given the circumstances, I think the Macs will be fine. Which coin do you mine?

We're exclusively mining BitCoin.  It's our opinion that it's the currency with the greatest opportunity to become widely used.  If it's good enough for the Winkelvosses (sp?), analysts at Citibank, the Government of China, it's good enough for us!
