Title: Would you donate BTC to help fund a project you believe in?
Post by: Pricelessent on May 08, 2018, 01:19:08 AM
Instead of running an ico and giving out worthless tokens, what if an open sourced project ran completely on donations from the community. Would you donate if you believed in it and felt it was needed in the crypto space?

Even small donations like .00001 BTC or .01 ETH

most projects are profit oriented, so they run ICO to round up investor funds
all investors are also profit oriented, otherwise they wouldn't be called 'investors'
so we are all in this for some profits, not for some kind of charity project
If the project is indeed a non-profit project, which I doubt it, then yes people might donate

You mean like Wikipedia? They collect millions of dollars (https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/2016-2017_Fundraising_Report) through their fundraising rounds.
I see no reason to limit fundraising to Bitcoin only though.

I don't "feel" the need for 99% of "developments" in crypto, the majority of "developments" is just money grabbing ICOs and forks nowadays. If only donating could make them disappear ;)

Sometimes, faith will lead you to nowhere. Faith without a proof is considered to be sort of misleading. And when you talk about donating bitcoin to a project I believe in, it even will sound too fishy to me because I am a skeptical person. I do not even know if the company I am working at in real life is a scam or not because they still have not pay me yet. But if I am 100% sure that this project has real good intentions, then I will be glad to donate.

If they make cool stuff to support my life/hobbies then yes. I support 2 project with shilling and help. Don't think I would send BTC.

Card game : EtherLegends
Urbex / Get round the ciry : Snapcity

Thank you for all your replies! I wanted to start an open source network that is ran by the members using it. And i did not want to create one with a useless token and did not want to conduct an ICO since they are mostly scams.

I want to make a business model like Wikipedia solely ran by donations

If your idea is not revolutionary and provides a benefit to the actual community, you will not gain any support.
Do not make profit your first destination and focus on not giving up.
You've already taken the most critical step. [stay away from ICOs and worthless tokens]
Good Luck.

The community is divided with this type of idea but I like that way of supporting a legit project that doesn't want to turn an ICO.

But you are also going there and that is to make profit.

I want to make a business model like Wikipedia solely ran by donations
As I've said you are going through that way of making money and if the people found your open source project helpful, it's a donation as a token of appreciation.

if you have good project, you can create coin and then open ico selling

Depending on the project you are talking on if the community would find out that this would really be exceptional or completely different into other traditional projects then you might get some donations but it would really be only on slim chances yet people doesnt entrust easily someone on online world just proclaiming that they do have a good idea and would like to ask a donation. Even though those numbers are just small but still we are talking money on here.

Yes, I think people will donate to the projects that they believe in with goodwill. Especially if the project aims to bring something beneficial to the general public, more likely it will get support from the people.

For this project itself will not be about profits for me. It is an open source project where donations will be used to pay oracles, developers, and keep the project running. I was also thinking of having a voting system where members of the community can vote on how the funds should be spent.

I've donated to projects in the past and seen them die.

They need a real model, and donations is pretty weak.

There is definitely an opportunity for you to earn donations if you prove that the project will be advantageous to certain groups by showing a structured plan and intentions with realistic and achievable goals. Prove that your project will be successful and show true desire to work hard and the donations will start coming in. I believe in you, keep it up!

Looking at the recent developments and also understanding the meaning of donation. It means you are only giving out to the project or campaign without getting no percentage in return. Which is very good because it helps promotes a good cause rather than have so many worthless projects jumping on and off the grid. I tend to agree with your thoughts.

Is crowdfunding out of the question in cases like this?

Is it necessary that you receive funding in crypto? Doesn't seem necessary if you're not interested in tokens and ICOs.

It depend on the purpose the project plans to achieve. If it is entirely for charity, then donation is a welcomed idea but otherwise, that will not be feasible. Everyone wants to make profit and you can't tell people to donate and not get something in return for projects that is supposed to yield huge profit to the developers

Yes I would. Yes, over the years that I have been involved in computers I regularly "donated" to Freeware projects that offered a option

for donations. One of the recent projects that I donated to was, https://tails.boum.org/donate/?r=sidebar  ... Tails is a

live operating system that you can start on almost any computer from a USB stick or a DVD. These guys will not survive

without the help from donations from the community. Tails accepts Bitcoin donations.  ;)

We would also set up a Patreon but was just curious about donating crypto. Honestly i view the crypto more valuable than fiat. We could have easily integrated a token into the project and ran an ICO, but chose not to. I don’t see the purpose of having thousands of different tokens to have to use for goods or services when BTC ETH and a few others can be used

A huge number of people made a lot of money on the cryptocurrency.
And it's easy money.
I think that if the project is really valuable, then there will be no special problems with obtaining donations from crypto-enthusiasts.

I don’t think I will do it. You cannot accept an investor to donate his investment. I mean now days everybody in the world are selfish so you cannot expect investors to spend their time and money for charity purposes. Also the project for which you expect us to donate money will be a earning some profit. Why should we donate our BTC then? But yes I can make some donations in other needy areas like NGOs, etc. But obviously if the amount of donation is not that considerable and makes something really good to the crypto industry or any industry then I may even contribute because if everyone would have thought like this we might never had got improvements in btc too.

If it's a good project and it's made to help others, why not? But I don't think that you will find a decent amount of donators in this space, it's crypto in his early days, you have more greedy people then something else in this space.

As much as we all love crypto, there is no intrinsic value in charities that accept cryptocurrency donations.

One of the best, if not the best, charity review sites is

https://www.givewell.org/

So... whenever we have some coins left, we exchange them for fiat and simply send it to Doctors Without Borders (https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/)

Can I nominate my own project, lol?  www.BitcoinOnline.io.

The plan is to have an ICD (Initial Coin Distribution), not ICO. Mining will be achieved through activity on the site. The site would be user owned and controlled through suggestions and voting.

Please check it out and let me know what you think. I've self-funded the whole thing. Trying to prepare for first airdrop launch and press releases by 7/1/18. Still many more features and content to add so little time . . . I've got 3 writers going, two programmers and have another thread I just started today oin this forum offering .002 Eth to anyone that helps test the site and leave some feedback.

Cheers,

John

Oh yeah, here's my ethereum donation address ;)    anything really would be much appreciated:

As for me I think we will donate to the projects but the project can be believed  by many participants. so the project aims to bring something beneficial to the general public, and may be it will get support from the people. And beside that if we have many BTC we can help a project in order the project is successfully.

You see, there's a big difference between donation and investment. The whole point in participating in an ICO is the possible return on the funds you're putting in the project which makes it very appealing. When you buy in an idea because you truly believe in its usefulness, then it's a win-win situation. So what good is donating, if you can't make money off of it?
