Title: What other interesting things do you invest in?
Post by: RodeoX on August 11, 2011, 11:34:32 PM
Just curious about what our wheeler-dealers here trade in. For example I buy art. Mostly oil and watercolor, but also some sculpture. So, aside from bitcoins what do you buy/sell?

Late eighties to early nineties European autos.  Fulfilling teenage fantasies.

Unfortunately, I'm better at buying than selling.  :D

I'm not a wheeler & dealer but sometimes I wish I could be.

I just bought my first hopped bismuth crystal, so technically I invested in bismuth.

Gold, silver, palladium, foreign currencies such as singapore dollar, Swedish krona, Swiss franc, tools etc for my small business, and old vinyl records (records not for profit, just personal collection.

That's about it. No stocks. For a while, I bought, fixed up and sold bicycles for a neat little profit. I sometimes have 5 bikes at a time in my apt.

Real estate, stocks, gold, silver, emeralds, misc gemstones, tools, guns. Pretty much everything has either been stolen or sold at this point. Still looking to dump the rented unit in Miami.

I knew you guys would have some crazy stuff in your portfolios. Not that gold is considered crazy anymore, or even guns. A friend of mine made a ton of money buying a crate of AK-47's just before the ban them selling after. I think I paid $200 for one and two months later he could get $500.
Art is still my favorite. my strategy is to not buy what I like, buy what the market likes.
Below is a detail from a good example. Too sweet for my taste, but well executed by a known artist and bought for very little. I'll make three times what I paid for it.

Electronics.  I look out for good deals on Craigslist, mostly computers, but some miscellaneous other items too (like a Magnavox Odyssey).

Also, I did buy a car for $4500, fixed it up with $1000, and resold it later for $4500 more than I paid for it.

I do a lot of forex and some stocks. For forex I am VERY patient. I only play on the daily charts with price action, s/r stuff like that. For stocks I use broad indexes and low transaction costs. This mostly means that I just trade one stock back and forth, about 4 trades/year. So, I do long-term, boring stuff . . . but boring stuff is usually where the money is  ;)

I think I have everyone beat for volatility. Coral can die and require retarded amounts of maintenance; your durable goods and stocks aren't going anywhere.

gold, silver, platinum - maybe these aren't strictly investments (more like wealth holders), but they have been looking good lately.
