Title: ABCPool.co: Pay-per-Share pool that pays for stales! (newbie support thread)
Post by: MintCondition on August 12, 2011, 11:19:14 AM
This thread is the ABCPool.co support thread for new forum users. It exists because new forum users are restricted and can therefore not post in the main ABCPool.co thread.

If you encounter any problems or have questions regarding ABCPool.co, please ask them here.

Also see the main ABCPool.co discussion thread in the 'Mining'->'Pools' forum: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=33586.0;all (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=33586.0;all)

--------------------------
ABCPool.co (http://ABCPool.co) has some advantages that are hard to find anywhere else in the same combination:
* Predictable Income: Pay-per-Share (PPS) means you know how much you get.
* We pay for Stale Shares and orphan blocks: Because we think a pool should be responsible for delivering new work to you in time! NB: Proportional pools that offer this, always do so from your own pocket. With PPS, stale share rewards are a real bonus.
* Immediate payouts: no more waiting for ‘estimated/unconfirmed reward’ to become available!
* Come & Go as you like: Pay-per-Share is immune to pool hopping

Of course you’ll also find the common features at ABCPool.co (http://ABCPool.co):
* Long Polling & NTime-Roll support
* Less than 0.1% invalid shares on average
* No penalty for invalid blocks
* Automatic and Manual payout
* Up to the minute stats
* Easy sign-up

A bit of background: As creators of ABCPool, we have always had a preference for PPS mining. We’d noticed for some time that there was a distinct lack of Pay-per-Share mining pools. That's why we decided to fill that gap in the Bitcoin community by introducing ABCPool.co (http://ABCPool.co).

We only charge ABCPool.co (http://ABCPool.co) a 4% nominal fee, which comes down to around 2.1% effectively due to stale shares compensation (0.4% pool-wide average) and orphan block compensation (1.5% average). (NB: Other PPS pools currently charge as much as 10% nominal fee)

If you have any questions about ABCPool.co (http://ABCPool.co), feel free to ask them in this forum thread, or see our main thread in the 'Mining'->'Pools' forum.

ABCPool is accepting new users again!

After a growing very fast in a few weeks we closed registration for a while to verify everything was running smoothly. ABCPool is now ready for more growth, so registration is open again!

Ars (and Eligius) have the concept of a buffer, from which miners are paid. If the buffer is empty (or negative) due to bad luck, you will receive payment at a later moment or not at all, depending on the specifics.

ABCPool has no such thing. You always know in advance what you'll get, even if the pool has bad luck.

Just want to plug for my favorite pool. Couldn't be happier with ABCPool.co and I've got all my miners pointed to your servers.

For anybody considering a pure PPS pool, which is the only logical choice in terms of mining for profit, ABCPool.co offers the highest price per share of any of the PPS pools, and in addition to that, the fact that they pay for stale shares is an added bonus on top of their already-superior payout of 0.000027690079662032 BTC/share.

Can't post in the other thread because of newbie mode.

Just wanted to tell you that I'm really interested in your pool, it seems great. We have 5 GHash that are probably going to join you soon.  ;D

Just pointed 2 Ghash your way.

lots more to come once the new hardware gets here :)

Any chance we could get a "Last 24 Hours Earned" counter on the stats page?

OK,  so I have a question about this 120 second invalid share thing.

I understand this is the default value in the software, but WHY?  Why is an otherwise valid share that takes 121 seconds to generate tossed in the trash?  A 119 second solution that solves a block is fine, but a 121 second block solving solution is not?

From reading the forums, my best guess is that this was originally put in place way back in the dark ages to discurage the use of _very_ slow (read: CPU) miners.  Well, thats great if the dificulty is only 100K, but now that the dificulty has increased nearly 20-fold, shouldn't this warrent a second look?

A miner putting out 80 Mhash may not exactly be top of the line, but it is still very viable if you get rid of the 120 second limitiation.

Also, it seems to me that if you have a miner that supports long-polling, the 120 second limit becomes completely pointless.

Are there some system resource issues on the back end that I'm not aware of? Or something like that?

Since I'm stuck in newbie-land, if someone could re-post this to the main thread, it would be appreciated.

thanks,
Sigg

I soooo hate replying to myself .. but since I saw in the main thread that you guys are wanting to concentrate on stale and invalid shares...

have you seen this thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=38629.0

more details here:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Getwork#rollntime

Looks like they have a mod to phoenix that gets them down to near zero (with some server side support).   I'm currently running over 3% between stales and invalids.. I'd love to knock that down.

Sigg

Great for miners Mint, but what about you?

how does the pool cope with a 8-10mill share round, where you're paying out 5 times more than you're earning?

Thanks for the suggestion Sigg. Our stale rate has been rising along with pool hashrate, and that's a concern. Time rolling is indeed one of the ways we are considering for lowering our stales. As a miner that doesn't have to keep you awake at night, because we pay for stales anyway :)

No-one likes to see too many 10mill share rounds, that's for sure. In the long run however, they are offset by those 100k rounds. Our buffer protects us from streaks of bad luck.

NB: please don't double-post. Use either this thread, or our main discussion thread.

Glad to know yer monitoring this thread.  Any chance you could give us your thoughts on my 120-second post above?

I agree that the stales are your problem, not ours  (though I'd really like to see them come down also, so far I like you guys) ..  The 120 second rule is, however, adversely impacting the invalid share count.  While a 1% invalid rate isn't exactly keeping me up at night, I'd still like to see it closer to zero :)

Sigg

I missed this post earlier, so I'll reply to it now. I don't think it has anything to do with excluding CPU miners. Although a CPU has less power than a GPU, CPU miners still contribute to the network security. Maybe even significantly, because there are so many more CPUs out there than GPUs. It just wouldn't be healthy to exclude CPU miners.

I also don't think long-polling changes the situation regarding the age-limit.

A much more logical reason is that old work causes the pool to miss out on transaction fees. How is that? New transaction (and their fees) keep coming in over time, and make the next block more valuable with every second that passes since the previous block. If someone hands in work that is 120 seconds old, that solution will not contain the transactions from the last 120 seconds. Remember that there are on average only 600 seconds between blocks. This means that work that is 120 seconds old misses out on (on average) 20% of possible transaction fees. Those 20% are passed on to the finder of block n+2 however, so the effect cancels out. Unless there is some pool that decreases or increases its age-limit, because that will shift the fees in favor of one of the parties.

Since most pools seems to use 120 seconds, ABCPool will do the same. This keeps the whole ecosystem in balance.

OK.. thats a much more logical explination than I've been able to find... thanks.

On a different note:  Are you guys tweaking the back end right now?  looking at my miners, they're reporting that I'm getting over 50% rejects today.  Switching over to my backup, they went down to <1% , so I don't think its on my side...

Thanks,
Sigg

One may have noticed that I am not the regular author of ABCPool forum posts. Normally I am working behind the scenes. As the pool grows and grows, MintCondition has asked me to be his first backup. For our miners nothing will change.

Happy mining!

We indeed had some issues at our side. Everything should be ok now again. We are investigating the cause.

NEWS: NTime-Roll support slashes stale and invalid rates!
Abcpool has been running quite stable for a while now, and judging from the forum posts most people are mining with us without any issues.

Since scaling up our systems a few weeks back we've worked on an area that affects both performance and earnings: NTime-Roll support. This behavior ensures less system load and even quicker response times, especially when it matters most: when the countless Long Pollers trigger all at once. We've been watching the stale and invalid rates since we deployed this new version several hours ago, and we are pleasantly surprised the rates have dramatically improved:

Old stale rate: ~0.2% - ~0.6%
Old invalid rate: ~0.3% - ~0.8%
New stale rate: ~0.06%
New invalid rate: ~0.23%

That's right: on average, our members are now generating bitcoins with 0%-fee for 99.77% of their submitted shares. That's a number that is certainly among the best any pool has to offer, if not the best.

Thanks for your continued support, and happy mining everyone! :D

MC

NB: If you are experiencing invalid rates higher than 0.5%, please make sure you are running the latest version of your miner software.

Hi Element51,

The extra income from merged mining has been around ~5.0% lately, as can be calculated from difficulty levels and exchange rates. We do not offer merged mining rewards. We do have 0% fees, making our payout level about the same as BTCGuild. An extra advantage of mining at ABCPool is that you do not have to worry about managing an NMC wallet and exchanging the NMC for BTC: All your payouts are conveniently in BTC.

Thanks for your interest!

Hi Crosby,
It tells me " A donation of 2.1% covers our operational expenses. " when I try to set it to zero.
That message is always present, no matter what donation percentage you set.
Quote
Isn't a forced donation pretty much a fee ? In so. invalidating the "advantage" for the registrant thus nullifying trust.
The donation percentage is not forced at ABCPool. You should be able to set it to 0%. Did you include your PIN? What is the message that is displayed at the top of the page?

Yep. The same for me. Since yesterday. Of course, it may be legal server maintenance by it's admins, but it also could be famous 'man-in-the-middle' attack. So I switched my miners to another pool until we get some clarification.

We use a self-signed certificate at the moment, which you'll have to accept on your PC to get rid of the error messages.

See our FAQ entry on how to install it: http://www.abcpool.co/faq.php#toc4 (http://www.abcpool.co/faq.php#toc4)

This may also have something to do with the new load balancer setup, which kicked in around the moment you posted. Please let us know if you continue to experience problems with the HTTPS access after installing the certificate, and we'll take another look at it.

Thanks,
MC

Everytime I change my donation amount (%), site says Donation % must be numeric. But I put it in numeric for sure, and I can't change it from default value (1%).

I think this is the best pool I ever tried!  :D

Will it also be the last pool you try? ;-)

Please send me a PM with your username and the donation-amount you feel is appropriate. We will then update the percentage to the desired amount (normally within one day).

regards,
Chlorine

I am click "Instant Cash Out" and

"Your balance has exceeded the amount for manual payout. Use our automatic payout feature to receive your funds this time, and try to withdraw more frequently in the future."

Your faq:
"Immediate Payment can be initiated at any time, no matter how much you want to withdraw. "

??

Just a guess, but you're probably trying to withdraw more than ABC has in its hot wallet.

Ugh. Hello. First off, great pool. Second off, I have an issue (of course). It appears my wallet reset and I have a different payment address in there now from the one I opened my account (unusedname) with. I've noticed payment addresses are locked now and I don't see anyway to add more. What are my options?

I didn't see this thread & thus made an earlier post but! I opened my acct in July of 2012 & just now got around to figuring out my username.. the password, however, I could not remember & now my account is deactivated. Who can I get in touch with to reactivate/get my pw? I know my PIN & assigned email.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Cale,

We offer our users PPS rewards to provide them with a more steady income. To do this, we source the work from various other pools to decrease our own risks of not finding a block. We don't provide a list of solved blocks, because other pools will already report the blocks found by our users.

Hope this clarifies things for you,
MC

Hello. I would like to know how can I change my payment address. It seems to be locked now. I used the original Bitcoin client but now I have to re-synch again and it'll take ages. I will send my bitcoins to another wallet so yeah. Great pool btw. Thanks.

(Copied from main thread)

Dear miners,

The journey is coming to an end.

When ABCPool started out in 2011, we became the first share reseller of our kind. ABCPool pioneered the idea of converting the contract for a share from variable-reward to fixed-reward and reselling it like that.

The idea proved successful, miners liked the low risk and low fees which caused ABCPool to quickly grow to a significant share of the mining market.
Bitcoin is still in its infancy, and is evolving quickly. With the arrival of Stratum mining, part of the underlying technology for ABCPool became obsolete. As we expected, pool hash rate has been dwindling ever since.

After two years, we are now at the point that ABCPool in its current incarnation has to close its doors. The newly arrived FPGA and ASIC miners have diluted turnaround per GHash, and are pushing networking costs up. Hosting costs have become too high to justify keeping the service available, even if we’d increase fees.

We’d like to thank everyone who mined with us throughout the years, and everyone who has contributed their feedback on our forum. You guys made running the pool a great experience, thank you for that!

This Monday (August 5 2013) we will be shutting down the getwork server. Our website will stay up all through august for people to withdraw any leftover earnings. Any balances remaining after that will be treated as donations to cover the losses of the past months. We have also updated our Terms of Service (http://www.abcpool.co/tos.php).

It’s not unthinkable that ABCPool will be making a comeback in some other form. Don’t hold your breath, but do send us a PM if you’d like to be kept in the loop.

As always, Happy Hashing,

Chlorine & MintCondition

I hope that Chlorine or MintCondition will do the RIGHT THING, PM me (unable so send PM with this new account), and refund my balance.
