Development Update: Peercoin v0.4 Status

"Sorry to keep you guys waiting; yes peercoin v0.4 has been in the works and once the merge with bitcoin v0.8 is reasonably stabilized I would push a v0.4 branch on the repo so interested developers can try it out. Hopefully in one or two weeks. Cold-locked transaction feature might be or might not be in v0.4, I haven't decided yet. If not it would be in v0.5. Coin control wouldn't be in v0.4, we'll first see what bitcoin v0.9 does with it." -- Sunny King

Energy Efficiency Update

https://i.imgur.com/eQeq9ev.png

"Peercoin now running at a rate  that is 250% more energy efficient than Bitcoin. Or, for every $1 of energy spent to secure the Bitcoin network, the Peercoin network does the same for $0.40. Keep it up! This will pay off in the long-run." -- Peercoin Community

This cuts to the heart of one of the primary differences between Peercoin and Bitcoin. Peercoin's PoS allows for continuously low energy consumption even with dramatically rising market capitalization. In fact, the greater the rise in market capitalization the greater the difference in energy efficiency of Peercoin versus Bitcoin will become. As Peercoin sees its energy consumption per USD decrease, Bitcoin may see energy consumption per USD increase susbstantially -- as will be the case if the Bitcoin network hash rate increases at a higher rate than that of market capitalization growth!

Activism: Volunpeers

The Peercoin community believes there's a place for anyone that wants to participate. Whether you are a developer, artist, writer, web designer or just someone that loves to spread the word, we would like to hear from you. Please take a few minutes to fill out this very short questionnaire below and tell us about yourself:

Energy Efficiency Update

How about a cost and energy benefit? Bitcoin's daily network cost per https://blockchain.info/stats (https://blockchain.info/stats): Hash Rate: 8,534,175.23 GH/s; Electricity Cost: $19,969,970.04
Peercoin's current hash rate per http://theseven.bounceme.net/~theseven/pool/netstats (http://theseven.bounceme.net/~theseven/pool/netstats) : 42,731.7 GH/s; Electricity Cost: $99,992.17

So Peercoin mining is roughly costing $19,869,977.87/DAY LESS in electricity then Bitcoin not to mention the power grid work load that is reduced across the globe.

Well it is impossible to know the actual dollar amount of energy being used because different mining efficiencies of ASICs. So this metric they used is the best comparison because Peercoin and Bitcoin are both SHA-256 so they are comparable in this way. I highly doubt Bitcoin is currently using $19 million dollars a day in electricity; however somewhere in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per day seems reasonable. Whatever the actual dollar amount is, Peercoin is still a lot more energy efficient in terms of value secured for the energy cost.

Great newsletter, but I think you guys should really create a dedicated website for the newsletter, not only to make it seem more legitimate, but so people who don't really lurk on these forums can also find it.

Mabye put a small link somewhere on the ppcoin.org page, and possibly even create a .bit version...

The letter is linked via the Peercoin Twitter and Facebook pages as well. A small link on the official site wouldn't be a bad idea I suppose, once the newsletter is more robust.

I believe the newsletters will eventually be on the main website. Also, we don't use ppcoin.org anymore. It's peercoin.net now.

Looks good, but I would prefer to have all cryptos trade to USD rather than BTC.

@sahkan: Thanks for checking out the site! We are actively investigating being able to offer Crypto/USD, Crypto/EUR, and other fiat denominations. There are complicated legal, regulatory, and operational considerations but we hope to offer some of these options in the near future.
