Title: $10 for signing up with Serve - PayPal comptitor from American Express
Post by: Stephen Gornick on August 13, 2011, 08:49:48 PM
Serve is giving away $10 for answering a trivia question.  The catch is that you then need to either have a Serve account or need to sign up for one in order to get the funds.  This is available in the U.S. only.

Once you have the funds in your account they can be sent to any other Serve user, spent using the Serve prepaid debit card, or withdrawn to a bank account.

How Serve works and why it is relevant to Bitcoiners was described shortly after its April Launch

This promotioin is similar to Dwolla's giveway program earlier this year where amounts from $1 to $5 were given away.  Over a decade ago, PayPal (then x.com) gained a user base by offering the same deal -- $10 for signing up.

Good hope they can drive a stake through their cold black heart and kill the beast once and for all time...

That's actually the last thing you want to see happen. What's better is that Amex knocks Paypal dizzy, then Visa/MC decides maybe they can boot Paypal off the map and comes in with their own service and we get a 3-way fight. That will keep rates competitive and we will have less of a problem with a monopolistic power thinking they can do whatever they want and flip you the middle finger if you don't like it because they know there isn't an competitor you can move to.
