Title: Introducing Bitcoin Theme ~ Hand Tooled Leather Wallets
Post by: Phinnaeus Gage on August 14, 2011, 05:25:04 PM
Now Accepting Bitcoin

Introducing the Bitcoin theme, hand tooled leather wallets by Martin Basurto: Read more about Martin, here: http://www.hotbikeweb.com/tech/0813_hbkp_hand_tooled_leather_seats/dream_evil_designs.html

First, and foremost, I wish to thank all those who've shown great interest and support in these wallets: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=35723.0.

Secondly, I want to categorically state, once again, that I recognize NO profit, what-so-ever, in the sale of these wallets or any other Bitcoin theme accessory products. Payment, whether in Bitcoin (not yet available) or with fiat currency, goes directly to my brother-in-law, Martin Basurto. Pricing of these wallets, or any other Bitcoin theme, hand tooled leather works of art, will only consist of the true cost of materials and tooling labor per project. Of course, you may still incur an additional charge for shipping, unless you stop by the studio and pick up your commissioned product(s) in person.

Martin's artwork on each wallet is tooled on high quality vegetable-tanned leather--the natural choice and only type suitable for carving. Kangaroo hide leather is by far the best leather for fine leather braiding. That's the only lace found in Martin's studio, therefore it's what you see in the images below, braided around the perimeter of each wallet shown below.

Bitcoin Leather aims to keep the price point of its products as low as possible so that more Bitcoin enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy the quality fashioned leather articles.

Update 10-17-2013: The following price points were set as an introductory, but due to the increased cost of leather and realizing the actually time it does take to produce a single wallet, the current price is exactly $200 USD which includes shipping/insurance to most any destinations. Also, at that price point, one has a lot of latitude as to what design, no matter how complex, within reason, they desire.

The three currently available styles of hand tooled leather, bi-fold wallets are:

  • The Pioneer Wallet  ~ Starting at $75
  • The Hashed Wallet  ~ Starting at $85
  • The Mused Wallet    ~ Starting at $95

Wallet Features:

The Pioneer Waller
  • Leather Interior
  • Fiat Currency Compartment
  • Card Pocket and Pass Case
  • Durable Vinyl Photo Sleeves
  • You Favorite Bitcoin Symbol Tooled on One Side
  • A Deluxe Lacing with Über-Strength Kangaroo Hide Leather

The Hashed Wallet:
  • Leather Interior
  • Fiat Currency Compartment
  • Removable Throwaway ID Case
  • Six Credit Bitcoin Card Slots
  • You Favorite Bitcoin Symbol Tooled on One Side & Your Choice of Lettering on the Reverse
  • An Enhanced Lacing with Über-Strength Kangaroo Hide Leather

The Muse Wallet
  • Your Choice of the Leather Interior Compartment Options
  • Fiat Currency Compartment
  • Creative Freedom to Completely Customize and Design Your Wallet
  • Hand Tooled and Stitched Name Plate on the Interior
  • A Myriad of Embellishment Options

The following images have a brief description accompanying them:

Dubbed the Pioneer Wallet, this prototype of our hand tooled leather wallet line, bears one of the Bitcoin symbols. It's come a long way since the idea was first introduced: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=35723.0.

Although the Pioneer Wallet was fashioned with a two-toned dying process, this image may show that effect more pronounced (than actually is) due to lighting during photographing.

This Pioneer Wallet was pre-ordered with a special request to have the owner's name (Eli Sklar) and the number 3 tooled and stitched on the inside of the wallet. All three wallets, depicted in this post, have different types of compartments on the inside and can all be viewed here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/66151463@N04/sets/72157627307564327/.

This black dyed Muse Wallet, depicting images associated with Ireland, was designed to get your created juices flowing on how you envision your very own Bitcoin theme, hand tooled leather wallet. One of the design elements that was to be fashioned into the Muse Wallet is clearly missing, due to the delay in shipping of the specially ordered Bitcoin dies, of which we've recently learned are on backorder. We opted to present the wallet as is, without any Bitcoin symbols, to increase the interest level. This wallet can be modified at an extra cost due to the fact that all the lacing would need to be unlaced to tool the leather, then be relaced. You would have the option of an upgraded custom lacing technique, if you so desire.

To view larger images of the wallets above, visit Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/66151463@N04/sets/72157627307564327/. In the Hand Tooled Leather Bitcoin Wallets set, you'll also be able to see what the inside of the wallets look like.

Fact: I did not set out to join this forum for the sole purpose of hawking leather wallets. This idea was only manifested a little over a week ago (beginning of August, 2011). It just so happens I have an brother-in-law who tools leather for his livelihood that enabled you to quickly see my Bitcoin idea to fruition.

What's your big idea involving Bitcoin?

Are you doing anything with it or just setting on your ass saying to yourself, "Only If!"?

Thank you kindly for your interest, iSellGames. I've just updated the post by adding the prices. Feel free to ask other questions, thereby allowing me to address all your concerns.

These are really cool! If I stumble upon more money I will definitely buy one!  ;D

I just got my first good amount of bitcoins today! I have 8 bitcoins now, which I know is not much, but I am very happy.

Thank you kindly for commenting on the quality of these wallets, Shadez.

8 Bitcoins is 8 Bitcoins: That's way more than what 99.9% of the world population has in hand in pocket in their Bitcoin wallets.

Could we see a picture or two of the insides of them where the card holders are etc.. and why no bitcoin payment option?

Thank you for your questions, SAC. I'm uploading the images depicting the inside of the wallets now to Flickr. Martin's currently exploring Bitcoin, but in the meantime he's accepting payment via the usual modes of transferring funds. He hopes that's not a deal breaker while he entertains the idea of accelerating the Bitcoin payment option.

I just received permission from Eli Sklar allowing me to publish images of the inside of his Bitcoin theme, hand tooled leather wallet, fashioned specifically for him.

Eli's main thread is here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34175.0
He's website is here: http://bitcoin.gridct.com/

Eli originally wanted the number 3 tooled with his name on the inside of the wallet, until I mentioned to him that the number 1 was available. Although he opted to go with the number 1, Karma intervened, thereby ending up with the number 3 below his name. Therefore, be careful what you wish for, because the universe is always listening.

Yes! I also sent you a PM outlining this proposal.

Allow me to throw it at you on how I envision your wallet, then you can toss it back to me.

                 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your logo--image, font style and colors...
...stretched across the whole outside of the wallet...
...featuring the enhanced lacing...with 6 (approximately 1/4" in size) Bitcoin symbols located in all 4 corners & 2 at the fold (see image above, located at the top and bottom in the center)
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6073/6042513238_593c116bcd.jpg
...with this style leather interior...
...and with your tooled leather name plate located behind the ID sleeve...(shown here in the Pioneer Wallet model, but what I'm basically describing to you is a hybrid between the Hashed Wallet and the Muse Wallet)
Let me know what you think about the design so far.
Thank you kindly for your comment and question, and allowing me to offer up a design for you.
Phinnaeus Gage,
Gorgeous wallets.  Let me know if/when you're able to take Bitcoins as payment.  I'm also interested in purchasing one or two with my company logo.  (It's actually an extremely simple logo.)
Cheers,
Kermee
Nice wallets! Can you post one with a credit card inside it and one beside it? I would just like to see how much bigger the wallet is compared to a credit card. Also, I am waiting until you can accept bitcoins (try bit-pay.com they seem reputable). Thanks!
Thank you kindly for your comments, ahitman. I've provided the images below that you've requested. Follow the link at the end of this post to view other images of this wallet showing the relative size next to my personal wallet (worn out, I know, but was a special gift years ago) along with images of the credit cards and fiat inserted.
I'm taking you up on your suggestion to go with bit-pay.com. I will let you know when I've completed that process.
Hi! I definitely like the exterior of the "Hashed Wallet". As of interior I have the similar wish to Phinnaeus Gage one - I want your tooled leather name plate to be placed behind the ID sleeve with the same color of letters and background that bitcoin logo have on the outer side of the wallet.
Another question - Do you offer international shipping?
Thank you kindly for your comment and request, kyrie*eleison. The design you outline would not be a problem what-so-ever. Also, my brother-in-law, Martin, has shipped all across the globe--with the exception of Antarctica--his hand tooled leather artwork. Therefore, international shipping is not an issue. Most likely, it'll cost around $15, but does depend on where you're located. The cost of the wallet you described will only be $95. (somebody please inform if that last sentence is against the rules on this forum, and should have quoted it via a PM)
Please PM or email me (available in profile) if you have any further questions or concerns.
Do you make leather wristbands?
Good Morning, osmosis. Quick note: I don't do the hand tool leathering--my brother-in-law Martin Basurto does. That said, yes he does fashion wristbands. I believe you're speaking about the type that bikers wear. Please correct me if I'm mistaken. I just checked his abbreviated portfolio that I have on my computer, but don't have an example to post. I know he has many examples in his file. I was in his studio yesterday and he just so happened showed me a leather wristband he had recently tooled. Killer! I also know he makes stuff for the heavy metal crowd which includes wristbands. Basically, they're the same type (if I'm not mistaken--Martin's into the leather [scene] whereas I'm into paddles wood).
If you can get a pic posted of his wristbands that would be great. If he is on etsy maybe you could link to that.
Also, I recently created an Etsy team for bitcoiners. Im wanting it to become an easy way to locate etsy artists who accept bitcoin. Here is the link: http://www.etsy.com/teams/10366/bitcoin
Hello, iSellGames. The tooled leather wallets are highly durable. No worries of having the image fade off even in a tight pocket. The image below is of a seat on motorcycle which is driven daily. It the owner of the motorcycle had a fear of this intricate design being ruined, he wouldn't have paid top dollar to have in tooled in the first place. Steven Tyler of Aeorsmith drives his bike daily with one of Martin's seat on it. I expressed all this so that you can rest assure that the image you desire on your wallet won't fade off any time soon. Yes, in many years, your wallet will start to show signs of wearing out. The leather used is the best available--no cheap leather is found in Martin's studio. I hope that addresses your question and concern. Thank you kindly, iSellGames, for your interest.
I like the hashed wallet but here in Australia coins are a really big thing because we have all our 5c,10c,20,50,$1,$2 coins etc. My current wallet has a zip section for coins.
This is interesting. As an American, I think like an American. It never occurred to me that different countries may have different wallet designs. Goes to prove there's always take-aways from everything in life--including the reading of forums.
Upon reading your post, I hopped over to Google (thought you may appreciate that) to get up to speed on Aussie wallet designs. The effort proved somewhat useless--I ended up with more questions in mind than answers. Therefore, would you be so kind as to snap a photo of your wallet, clearly showing the numbers on your credit card for size reference? Seriously, simply supplying me a link to a common Aussie wallet should suffice (showing a style you prefer would be worthwhile).
Yeah but it's such a pain between the butt cheeks to actually carry that coinage in a little zip pouch inside the wallet. It aways bulges too much. It's hard to sit on (when carried in the back pocket) and really isn't good treatment on the wallet. I always keep my coin change in a front pants pocket anyhow. Only notes/cards go in the wallet.
Hey Bruno! I wouldn't mind picking up one of those lovely wallets (one with the big bitcoin logo on the front). They really are beautiful and I can see the quality just oozing out of them. I want to pay in bitcoin though, that's what we're all here for after all. Also if you want to have a couple on display at the Aust. Bitcoin Expo, I am happy to take orders. That goes for anybody with genuine hand crafted products (not middleman retailing of Chinese imports). Also, I need a good leather whip for my new girlfriend. I haven't found her yet but I'll know her from the way she responds to the whip. :P
OK sorry it took me so long but here is a 800x600 jpg of my wallet. I took this photo with my mobile phone so it might be of the best quality:
I took out all the cards are reading your little joke lol... good thing you mentioned that ;)
As you can see I have a zipped coin compartment. I can't use a wallet that doesn't have one as sometimes I can be carrying up to $20 just in coins.
Oh! and I thought you were the leather guy.
Just to make sure everyone here understands--Martin Basurto (my brother-in-law)--does all the hand tooled leather work. You can say that I'm doing the marketing for him. Here is why (site he created years ago and still active): http://www.dreamevildesigns.net/
Quote
Well hows about some displays of your woodwork handicrafts?
I used to build primitive furniture and crafts, but now I just supply the wood to the crafters and makers. I can easily throw together a handsome shelf of sorts for any needed displays.
I'm now accepting Bitcoin. Yes, I wrote "I'm" for I'll be collecting the BTC payments and paying Martin the cash. I/we feel Martin has enough headaches dealing with PayPal, his main source of revenue. When the time arrives that Bitcoin is more mainstream, or the process is easier for him and grandmother to use, he'll switch over. This is even a better option because I'm more apt to spend the Bitcoin, oppose to Martin converting BTC to $ and buying stupid stuff like cow skins.  ::)
I'm not 100% certain, but I believe Martin has made whips in the past. After writing that sentence, I thought about Bitcoin themed whips (after writing that sentence, WTF am I thinking?--I can see the Thread title down ~ Boycott Bitcoin Leather). No soup for me for one year!
Let me know when you're ready to order, Karmicads. Beforehand, have some design elements in mind to personalize your wallet.
But also for the EU you will want to offer one with a compartment to store coins. Euro currencies means lots of coins, as they go up to 2 Euro coins and a gazilion smaller ones. OTOH smallest bill is 5 Euro.
You might also want to check if EU driver licenses fit, especially considering that here everyone always carries driver license, and identity cards. The new upcoming licenses are small (like our electronic identity cards) and I think ought to fit, but the current ones are pretty damn huge. Almost as big as standard international passport. If you need the dimensions Ill measure mine.
BTW, there is a slight irony to having a bitcoin wallet carrying legal tender and unable to carry bitcoins. I kinda like that :)
Have you thought about doing something like this?
http://www.chinawholesalegift.com/pic/Electrical-Gifts/USB-Memory-Stick/Leather-USB-Flash-Disk/Leather-USB-Flash-Drives-21552238734.jpg
Now that would be cool.
That way, they could actually be BitCoin wallets. :-D
One thing i feel bad about your leather wallets.
we can't store bitcoins directly in it.
That's very bad.
Martin wanted me to tell you, Al, thank you for your kind words and purchase (I paraphrased).
Others, here, have purchased wallets (and one saddle) and paid via Bitcoin, but I've opted to keep their transactions private unless they mention it first on this thread.
From this day forward, all wallets sold and paid for with Bitcoin will have the total proceeds go directly toward Bitcoin100: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52543.0
My brother-in-law, Martin, will still receive the total selling price, but in fiat, paid to him from my personal Chase checking account or in cash. This offer applies to any other hand tooled leather product you desired produced by Martin Basurto, regardless of cost. Simply PM me if you would like to place an order.
Wallets, laptop cases, notepad cases, purses. If Martin's work is good enough for museums, Jesse James, Jesse Ventura, Steven Tyler, and almost two dozen magazines, I'm sure he'll be able to do any design you can possibly throw at him to be tooled on leather.
He doesn't use any cheap leather, and he's considered an old-school artist, whatever that's supposed to mean, but believe fellow artist do.
Hit my up via a PM if you're interested.
These are amazing! Think you can make me an exact replica of the wallet image that existed in the application before Gavin changed the splash screen image?
Scratch that. Think you can place the design that you have on the Hashed wallet on the darker colored Pioneer wallet instead? If so, how much would that cost?
I want it to look as much like this: http://dribbble.com/shots/774944-Bitcoin-Wallet (http://dribbble.com/shots/774944-Bitcoin-Wallet) as possible.
Yes, to all your requests. The ONLY difference in the final product and with the image you provided is that the wallet will be laced and not sewed. The cost will be exactly $200 USD via BTC via BitPay via my barn wood website, and that includes shipping/insurance to probably most any place on Earth. If you decide to go with it, there's a couple other design aspect you'll be able to incorporate during the ordering process as part of the overall package.
To reiterate what I've stated in the past, the bike enthusiasts don't go installing anybody's hand-tooled leather seats onto their prized bikes. The same quality and workmanship depicted below is incorporated in each hand-tooled leather wallet.
Also, at :37 in the following video, Jay Leno is signing the USO bike that has Martin's seat on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTPRdGbyVfY If I'm not mistaken, all the bikes in this video has his seats as part of their design features.
Woah $200? I thought they were about 70-90 USD.
Please accept my apologies. I have updated the OP with the following:
Quote
Update 10-17-2013: The following price points were set as an introductory, but due to the increased cost of leather and realizing the actually time it does take to produce a single wallet, the current price is exactly $200 USD which includes shipping/insurance to most any destinations. Also, at that price point, one has a lot of latitude as to what design, no matter how complex, within reason, they desire.
shipping isnt cheap and you can costomize the wallet as you want it.
It is also high quality materials, so I think 200 USD is a good price.
anyway, when I receive my wallet, Ill post a "review" here :)
Can i ask what the inside of the hash wallet looks like?
I presume if i didnt want the text on the back of the wallet that would be possible, maybe some different text?
Page one of this thread has some images, but bottom line simply state what you desire inside and I'll let you know what's possible. The options mainly consist of business and credit card holders/sleeves, and a coin pouch if desired.
If you really want to get creative, consider a bike wallet where the sky's the limit pertaining to design at $300 USD delivered: https://www.google.com/search?q=hand+tooled+leather+biker+wallet&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS549US549&espv=210&es_sm=122&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=DcxiUqmLMIbmyQGlpYDgBA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1092&bih=508&dpr=1
And was even going to hand-deliver it since I was going to do some shopping near his neighborhood this weekend, but Rawted was going to be outta pocket, coupled with the weather may force me to cancel the trip, thus to the USPS like a half-frozen locust I must go.
