Title: Satoshi Award - A proposal to the community
Post by: upal on December 14, 2013, 02:23:40 PM
This is a proposal to the BitCoin community, if u feel it worth discussing.

Just like we have Nobel Prize or Oscar every year, can we have a Satoshi Award for best Bitcoin innovation/development/implementation/awareness campaign ? If every year is not possible, we may have it in every leap year on 29th Feb :)

p.s. We may start it after 21M btc come to circulation, but discussion may start now...

Yes discussing it for the next 100 years looks like a good idea  :P

It will take over 100 years for all bitcoins to be mined and in circulation.

You make a good suggestion though.

Idea approved. Price money can come from Foundation, they have enough. Winners should be nominated and voted by the community (this forum).

Actually, this is already in the works by venerable bitcoiners, of which I'm not part of the project. Expect an announcement soon, probably sooner since this thread was created.

Why we should wait till 2140? Almost 60% of the coins are already mined out. We can proceed directly to the awards now.

Btw if someone is already working in this idea please don't name it Satoshi award.
I mean not everything around bitcoin should be named after satoshi  :P :P

Definitely a valid argument. I'd say. There are a lot of unsung heroes, who did their bit to publicize the digital currency during the 2009-10 period. They should also get their fair share of the pie.

Because the OP was a jr member , who probably had no clue when will the last bitcoin be mined.

How and when to proceed ? Should BitCoin Foundation be the authority or BitCoin exchanges should join as well ?

I for one think it's an awesome idea.  And Upal, since he made it up, should be the one who holds onto all donations, and be the one to give out the prize.  He's trustworthy enough xD

In all seriousness, it is a fun idea though.

Actually I suggested Satoshi as he is an unknown and mysterious character. Is there more contributors to Bitcoin who are mysterious like him ? Pardon my ignorance as I do not know anyone like that.

But, if your point is we already have a Satoshi unit then we may name it 'Nakamoto Award'  :P

...and about the choice of mysterious character, as Einstein said...

"The most beautiful thing, which we can experience, is the mysterious". :D

Why did you ask him? He is not the leader of Bitcoin. He is just an developer.

Popularity contests are exercises in political punditry. Anything developed in Bitcoinia benefits us all by increasing its utility and value. There are other awards that can recognize Bitcoin developments if they so choose. Certainly Bitcoin developers deserve statues built in their honor, but just by participating in the great Bitcoin experiment, we are all winners.
