Title: How much bitcoin was cheated off you before? BTC Scammability Index
Post by: descarte on December 14, 2013, 10:46:20 PM
It will be interesting to collect some statistics on the scammability of bitcoins. Please be honest so we can all benefit from the result of the poll.

Were you scammed before? How much?

Definition of scam:

a) You bought something with btc and got nothing in return.
b) You wallet was hacked.

Scammability Index 1 = 100% scam

Scammability index 0 = 0% scam

People are scammable, not Bitcoins. Never been scammed so far, and hopefully never will be because I would be mad as hell and probably punch a puppy.

always be careful, even if it means losing on 10,000% return opportunities that may turn out to be real, if it doesn't sound right it probably isn't, do your research.

i am slow to react with my BTC since i know it's the wild west with BTC.. so i haven't really been scammed yet. if you're willing to take a lot of risks, maybe there's a good deal of reward.. but you will have to accept the chance of losing your money.

everybody should remind themselves to not be so greedy, as sometimes chasing the BTC may blind them from potential risks. your wealth is entirely in your hands.

Statistics and a poll on a web forum are basically orthogonal concepts.

It will be interesting to collect some statistics on the scammability of bitcoins.
Statistics and a poll on a web forum are basically orthogonal concepts.

Statistics and a poll on a web forum are even more basically redundant

not everyone will be honest. a few people will say they lost thousands to get sympathy votes to then later beg for free coins
not everyone will be honest. a few will say they only lost a days worth of trade when infact they lost the lot. but dont want to admit to it.
not everyone will want to answer.

so making a poll is useless.. all it will do is identify people that do not do any 'due diligence' or risk checking. which future scammers can use as their list of targets for future scams

I have a private key and password holding service. Its totally free, forever.

If you want to protect your BTC from scams, just post your private key details here and I will store them safely for you.

Well, base on the poll so far, most people have not been scammed before =>  so most people were very careful when making btc investment.

Nice poll.

I've yet to be scammed.

I did make bad investments though.

I have been scammed 0.15btc months ago (but actually knowing the risks involved at the time)
and about 0.01btc still unconfirmed (will find out soon)
Overall, I consider myself pretty careful with my bitcoins

I lost some 25 BTC when Litcoinglobal and BTCT decided to shutdown without a warning. At that time they represented some 60% to 70% of all my BTC net worth. (Right now no matter how hard I work, I still can't get to that 25 BTC mark).  ;D

I lost 16.8 btc due to purchasing a scammed miner.

looks like the scammability index now is 0.5, so 50% of bitcoin users got scammed before. 15% got scammed less than 1 btc. 6.5% got scammed more than 1000 btc. wow

While there been deals I regretted (spending BTC on random crap before it rose in value), in my case it's.. never!

I did however withdraw everything I had from inputs.io just three weeks before it got "hacked" (I simple had a bad feeling about having a part of my BTC in a web wallet). So it's been close. Too close.

I don't think the poll is indicative of the bitcoin community as whole though.

Haha what crap did you buy? This is one of my main fears of spending BTC right now. I've already made nearly 1000% profit on my BTC, so I'd still getting a ridiculously good deal for my coins, but I don't want to order a pizza and a few months later have ended up essentially paying a stupid amount for it.

In my case it was TF2 items. In retroaspect though, I was using BTC I just bought with fiat currency to buy said items, and I was getting a really good deal at the time. I bought up BTC later to make up for it (BTC that I told myself to not spend until the next reward halving), and said loss is becoming more and more of a distant memory. Certainly not as bad as the 10K BTC pizza at least. ;)

I don't think we see another crazy BTC rally anytime soon and we're entering another stable but boring price period after the months past fluctations, so I'd think right now is actually a safe moment to spend (and buy) BTC.

2 sides to every pizza

It has been fairly stable and hasn't been as wild as it was, but it's still fluctuating quite a bit. I reckon the price is going to gradually rise with more and more merchant adoption and mainstream acceptance, and I think all it will take is one major company to announce that it may start accepting them and that'll skyrocket the value. 2014 is gonna be interesting for sure.

Haha, that is true, but I'll still be up unless it crashes down to October prices, but yes, two sides to every pizza  :D.

Bah, I don't have lots of BTC, but I bought a couple of pizzas for my family the other night... it was the first tangible thing I've bought with BTC, and it tasted GOOD :)

I also would feel slightly uncomfortable shouting to everyone about how great BTC is if I'd never actually used it to buy something.

But I'm hoarding the rest, of course. ;)

Nope. I owned shares of BTCT-PT and Litecoinglobal (i.e the shares of the exchanges themselves). These shares were not transferred to anywhere.

I'd like to spend some, I just daren't. At least there's plenty of other people spending, but yes.

There's a takeaway website http://www.takeaway.com/ that delivers many different takeaways to your door (in the UK) which accepts Bitcoin, and I like the idea of getting essentially free food. I'll probably spend some of the money I get from my PrimeDice sig though, just to give it a little test and to say I've actually bought something with it, because I do believe in it as a currency and want more people to start adopting it, so lead by example. But yeah, I'm hoarding the rest ;D.

Oh man, for a couple months while BTC went down from 150 to 66 I bought every single Humble Bundle that came out. I thought I was the shit.

Now I have +150 steam games of which I have probably played about 20.

Sadly, I didn't had any AM-PT shares. All I had were BTCT-PT and Litecoinglobal shares. Both of them were liquidated. I got 0.025 BTC compensation for every BTCT-PT share. I had bought them for 1.1 BTC. That is a loss of 98%.  ???

Yeah, I used the Dutch version, ThuisBezorgd.nl -- got our family 2 delicious pizzas back when the exchange rate was still around the $1k mark :D

The only other thing I've bought so far has been a couple of domain names with Namecheap.
