So, what do you use? Windows? Linux? Mac?

Windows here

Linux OpenSUSE because I like operating systems that actually work. Windows is a buggy OS that creates too many wasted hours configuring it in between BSOD episodes. Mac OSX has been crippled since Snow Leopard. Mavericks being the newest and worst of them all. It seems like every time Apple wants to add some little merchandising app or system they have to break other systems to do it. Safari Power Saver was supposed to be a fix for Mavericks draining your laptop because of flash player running but it doesn't work. What a piece of shit.

If you're ever doing software, and don't want to develop in Java, you can just write to X, and Mac OS X will run it as a UNIX application.

I use Windows 7, because gaming is what I'm into, and Linux as well as Mac lacks in this situation.

Well, there are lots of great games in Linux, but, at the end of the day, most are released for Windows. I guess it's just because most of the people are using it :)

I use both mac and linux. OSX 10.6.8, 10.7.5 and Ubuntu 12.04!

Most time Gentoo Linux now and in addition to that I have a few Windows virtual machines for testing. Also have a working win2K system (at least last time I checked it worked) since ancient times on another hard disk. Voted for Linux..

Mac is such a superior machine for devs and customers. So many tools that are so intuitive and powerful to use. Lets not forget about its security 🎃

No, I love macs. BTW Don't reply to ME like I am that OTHER GUY, I'm someone completely different. Now that that is out of the way.

Macs are pretty cool. No their hardware isn't that great, but their operating system is A+++ in my opinion. 100x better than Linux of course. Not better than Windows, no. But easier than Windows, most of the time yes. I say Windows has 1 million times more customization than Mac, but in ease of use, Mac is the way to go.

But my favorite is still Windows. I know I may offend some people when I say Linux sucks, but, it has frustrated me and yes when Vista came out I switched to Linux, I even learned how to do a lot of cool tricks on it, I knew the terminal commands and whatnot, but then Windows 7 came out, I got that, and when I went back into Linux one day, omg frustration out of every fiber of my being. Never again.

I like macs since OSX is a LOT more stable than any windows or linux (desktop) version. Macs are also great because they are based on UNIX and therefore runs UNIX commands and programs. The mac is on the other hand not very customizable. Linux comes second because it's open source, UNIX commands works, it is 100% customizable and extremely powerful. I don't like windows at all since it is buggy, laggy, closed source, microsoft and there is a lot of malware to that platform.

Windows is the most common i guess.. Linux are for hosters and stuff and Mac are for richt people :D

I use Windows 7 and a version of Ubuntu Linux running Backtrack 5.

Windows and Linux. Linux (And Android) has great capabilities for running on old, portable hardware providing astrophotography and scientific support :) Windows is used mainly for gaming by me.

No if there weren't Windows around, Linux and Mac would not have been created.

I don't know about Mac but Linux was created in 1991. We probably can't say that Windows was in its infancy right then (since it was introduced in 1985) but surely not what you mean by being around...

I kind of agree with you. If Windows had been a better, more configurable and more affordable OS Linux would have been unnecessary.

I started PC gaming when Linux pretty much had no bigger games released on it. Besides, being a huge TES series fan, I can only choose Windows as the games were released on Windows only. Possible to launch from an emulator or a VM maybe, but it won't be running at it it's full capacity.

The Mac was developed before Windows. Apple was first with the GUI-system and computer mouse. Bill Gates stole Apples ideas by misusing Steve Jobs trust. So, Microsoft is the bad guys. However, it was the competition between Apple and Microsoft that led to new innovations (for example Microsoft were first with multitasking).

I'm using Windows. Don't get me wrong. I am a strong supporter of Linux and I have used Fedora Redhat for many many years.... but I found it quite difficult to use sometimes, so gave up using it all together.

Alot of Linux guys, that's really refreshing to see.

Why not give an option to choose more than one?

At work I have a company supplied computer running Windows, but I also frequently use systems running on linux (Our NMR machine is run by a RedHat system).

At home I have a Mac, but I drop it into a virtual machine Ubuntu for several things, at this point my Mac is so old that new releases of software do not run on it and so I have resorted to switching to the Linux versions of things (horray for Linux backward compatibility!). The next home computer I get will probably be running Linux of some sort.

there have already been two other polls asking this question, one of them I made. But it doesn't hurt to ask again because over time the answers can change.

Off topic question, does anyone know how to find all the threads a user has started? Because I was going to reference the thread I started but actually I don't know how to find it. It was hundreds of posts ago.

Mac Chiming in. Got a Windows that's mining now, and will setup a Linux when I can find some video cards.

windows 8, because my laptops running windows xp and 7 got bricked. I haven't used Linux since Sony removed otherOS from PS3.

I have different versions of Linux on all my machines, but a few of them double-boot with Windows 7. I make music with Ubuntu Studio.

I don't like Apple, but it has nothing to do with their software: their knack for planned obsolescence gives me environmental cramps. So wasteful -- and expensive.

That was actually before my Macbook Pro arrived and I saw a lot of their keynotes on how revolutionary their products were which made me order one.

In the end, no I don't love macs, I still like it more than Linux though. However, Windows is still the best operating system in the world for me.

Hey, guys! Now Linux seems to be on par with Windows according to this vote (indeed it is by far superior strictly on technical terms only, see top500.org for a proof). Are bitcoiners pro-linux really?

I think most long time Bitcoiners are more pro-Linux than the average. There's a good reason for this phenomena. Most of us were CPU or GPU miners that had multiple computers going at once (I had 12-14 going at any given time). There is no reason to buy a license for Windows for every miner when Linux is free. Also, many Bitcoiners program in a high-level language like Python because it's easier and requires fewer lines of code to make something cool happen. These people make all the various additional software that Bitcoin relies on to make it user friendly. Bitcoin developers are the backbone of Bitcoin and release everything under a "free to use and develop" GNU GPL type license. It makes more sense to work on a platform where everything is free, even the OS (things are still released in a Windows version though because many people use it). These two things make the Bitcoin community more pro-Linux than most.

People who are pro-bitcoin for ideological reasons are more likely to pro free software. Free as in freedom, not free beer. Linux is free software. You can get the source code, and you can change it to how you like it if you wish.

Windows as desktop, mac as laptop!
So far I've never had a windows laptop I've been satisfied with, overheating, fans dying, performance going to hell, shitty batteries are just a few of the problems.

Is there a windows like that? I was using Win95 and then Win98. I never heard of Win97 though.
I am using Windows 7 now, and waiting for Windows 9 or 10 to come out.

i am using window7. its is very good window for entertainment . GUI features are also good simple to use and execute. i have activated window but it need update every months. it decreases my internet speed some time :(

For me its windows .. 7. accidentally switched to windows 8 but it sucks so switched back.. now afraid of even Installing windows 8.1 although few of my friends suggested it.

This, you cant beat this feature with linux or mac currently.
But not best at keeping Bitcoins secure, you have to learn using paper or offline wallets

Ever heard of virtual machines or wine?

Many state-of-the-art games, especially graphics heavy (such as FPS), are not running smoothly in virtual machines (mildly speaking). And wine requires some knowledge which is a way beyond that you would expect from an average Joe... 8)

Buying second PC just to be hipster and use Windows and other system at the same time is not good idea for the most people. But if someone is really rich and does not care about money... at least  I am too poor for that.

If you ask me, I don't play games (though keep an eye on what's going on in the game industry)! Actually, you don't need to buy 2 PC's, you can just use dual boot instead! ;D

I am using linux because I think it's much better and safer compared to windows. The problem with windows is this: it constantly runs a ton of tasks and old problems with DNS thread and such were never fixed, they never fix any bugs! and current version of windows 7/8 runs 4x to 5x as many tasks as an XP... it's a useless shit.

I use both.  I have a windows desktop, but I carry around a MacbookPro.  I think Mac is a much better operating system for laptops because of the amazingly good touchpad integration in the OS. 

Right now I'm using android (Linux) on my tablet. But my desktop PC runs windows. I have a few other assorted computers around my house running windows and all sorts of Linux variants. Mining related distros and such.

I don't use iOS/OSX for anything.

Only Windows - Linux are not usable for soft download.
In practise - Linux is also not safe - there are not developed antivirus soft in the market for Linux.

Used Windows then 'evolved' into using free software so I switched to Linux - tryed many of mainstream distribution as OpenSuse, Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, but ended with great Linux mint - mainly because Gnome 3 sucks for desktops and they were first to develop something similiar to Gnome 2 - called Mate. I recommend this distribution to everyone.

I've been on mint with cinnamon for 3 months now and I'm never going back to windows. even the gf is using mint with mate on her laptop and she's about as computer illiterate as they come

everything just works right away and installing programs is as simple as googling "skype linux" and typing a few commands

I have been a Windows Fan for years and no chances of leaving it for anything else.

Any serious Bitcoin trader (as my self), would use a Mac. IMHO. Just more reliable with less crashes.

Heh, I used Mint way back in the day. Used to dualboot it with XP on my old laptop. I think I ran v3 or 4. Can't remember... It's pretty awesome though. Whenever I need to quickly setup an OS for a PC, I always use Mint.

Arch Linux is amazing, deffo recommend it although it is not for beginners.
Alternatively Lubuntu with XFCE desktop is a winner.

I'm using windows because i can't afford Mac. It's as simple as that.

The poll surprised me. I don’t like windows but it is a necessary evil as a lot of software will only run on it. I have dabbled in Linux for the past 15 years but a Mac is my daily go to machine with windows installed in a virtual machine. Maybe Linux has progressed since I last used it but at the time there was a lot lacking. I use my computer for work and some days am working ten hours a day on it and the Mac gets it done.
