I was wondering the same thing. Quick suggestion, when registering it would be a good idea having an email mentioning the newbie rule or getting a msg when signing in. regards

In my case it's been 4 hours and I'm still a newbie! Is this standard procedure? Maybe I should post more

Although I'm going through the same newbie status, I guess the best course of action is to just wait. I'm sure there is a queue a mile long for folks in the same place as us.

The requirements also specify it must be a post of sufficient content spanning a few sentences.

Such as this one.  I hope.

Does the "newbie leash" extend to PMing as well?  I am attempting to purchase Mastercoin through the Order Book, and this requires sending a PM to members here, but I get the "an error has occurred, you are not allowed to pm" message when I attempt to do so.  Can you, please, advise?

i have my account in bitcointalk.org since May ī13. i never had reason to write any post, reading was enough for me. mostly i found answers to my questions and didnīt need to spam every thread full.
now when i see my status as "brand new" it just looks funny for me.
i think, that this "newbie" status and the reasons why this status is existing, are not up to time anymore. just usual informative stats about every member would be enough.
or can anybody reasonably explain me, how this restriction of 4h should "protect" rest of community?

regards
Tegija

It's so frustrating not being able to post or even ask question in certain topics. The whole reason I joined was under the presumption that as a newbie to bitcoin I would be able to ask these so-called veterans about some useful things, instead you end up stuck in a topic just for newbies. Isn't this the exact opposite of what a forum is suppose to be about? Users and members learning from each other? Not just some elitist organization where the senior members get all the perks and newbies, well pretty much just watch them.

A single post with 4 hours of online time and you status should change from a newbie to a junior member.

Only one post is needed and after the four hours you get Jr. Member status, it's all in the thread I linked earlier.  :)

Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a while, just never posting. I'm not sure if this post has enough content to qualify, but I guess you have to start somewhere.

I guess I'm officially new here too...  :P

Thanks

This is my post #1 as well - I was really hoping to post in one of the other categories on here but it seems I need to make a substantial post first.  I know they can't post what "substantial" means since people would just post 1 character over that but it would be nice to know if my post qualifies or not  :)

Oh well, I figure this is probably enough so I guess I'll just sit back and wait my 4 hours

It is to prevent (well, at least reduce) spam.
Without the 4h wait time, people can register a new account, make a post in newbie section, and start spamming IMO.
The 4h requirement would (hopefully) discourage such action, and also encourage new joiners to read the sticky posts on different boards so that people don't ask FAQ again and again.

Yeah but they do this to prevent noobs or scammers from quickly filling up the other topics with spam.
Plenty of "veterans" still visit the Newbies section to help them out with most anything and to welcome them to the forum.

Okey, here it goes. My first post, which should be substantial, whatever that may be (probably not just a few sentences with meaningless words ;) ).
I registered because i would like to trade/buy some LRM bonds, to do that you have to PM, and for that you have to post first (and wait 4 hours). So hopefully this post will get me going.

Although I understand it is necessary to have some sort of restriction for newbies, it is still frustrating :D

If only it was four seconds and not four hours...

Title: Re: How many posts are required to get out of newbie status
Post by: JohnDoe21 on December 19, 2013, 01:41:09 AM
I find these restrictions rather silly. One post of significant value? What is significant? Not to mention an additional 4h wait.

Seeing previous restrictions these new ones are lax in comparison, but it was ludicrous then and silly now.

To think you'll stop any spammer by saying "yeah, pump out a few sentences and wait" seems a little naive, don't you think?

Regardless, this is one of the biggest forums for bitcoin and you make posting like pulling teeth. You may stop some spammers, but you won't stop them all. To make it so asinine to post is only hurting the real posters who want nothing more than to increase the quality of the board, but they can't because they have to sit in the newbie section like you're disciplining children.

Title: Re: How many posts are required to get out of newbie status
Post by: selshan on December 19, 2013, 01:53:39 AM
I think the initial wait + substance of the post is fine. It helps mitigate the people who don't really have anything to contribute. Most people will be turned off by the 4 hour wait, and hopefully those who stick it out will actually consider sticking around and really becoming a part of the community.

Well, I am getting old. Since I hadn't found the forum rules at the usual place, it tooked me 20 minutes to find this very informative thread to hopefully help me out of the sandbox.
Very annoying policy...
