Title: Which mining software works for pools?
Post by: TheSmo on December 17, 2013, 12:05:40 PM
Hi all,

I run some Windows 8 and 7 machines where I want to run some mining software. I want to test several pools and several coins.

My questions: I don't understand why i get some results on some settings and sometimes it doesn't work:

Example that's not running:
the pool site says:
Quote
If you use a command-line miner, type:
./cgminer --scrypt  -o stratum+tcp://doge.cryptovalley.com:3333 -u Weblogin.Worker -p Worker password
I try to run cgminer-3.8.4-windows
with
Quote
cgminer --scrypt  -o stratum+tcp://doge.cryptovalley.com:3333 -u MyNick.1 -p MyWorkerPW
miner stops because it doesn't understand "--scrypt"

With old mining software, I got it running:
CGMiner 2.10.4
Quote
cgminer -o stratum+tcp://nl1.ghash.io:3334 -u MyNick.1 -p MyWorkerPW

I have access to Windows 7 and 8 machines, i5 CPUs, NVidia graphic cards (yes, i know they are slower than AMD), but I will not buy hardware before I understand how to get it running.

Anyone can help me understand what miner software I should use?

The last version of CGMiner that supported alt coins and GPU's was 3.7.2.

Moving forward CGMiner only supports ASIC's and Bitcoin.

Ah, ok, that explains a lot :).

What other mining software should I sue? Or should I stick with the cgminer you mentioned?

I've only used Ufasoft, 3 years ago when I first started, and CGminer.  I have only mined Bitcoin, so I know nothing about alt's.

So I would probably use CGMiner 3.7.2 or earlier.  Also the scrypt/GPU development has been taken over by others, from what I understand.
