Title: Do it Yourself - Physical Bitcoin [ coins sold out ]
Post by: serp on December 17, 2013, 06:51:59 PM
I had planned on releasing custom made loaded coins to follow up the previous loaded coins I had.  Given the recent happenings and the fact that I do this for fun and not business I'm liquidating what I have as DIY coins instead of loaded coins.

Info on previous coins and the current diy pieces at http://serpco.in

Some images/info about the DIY coins below:

Blank Coins
https://i.imgur.com/f2tO2KJ.png
 - 35mm diameter

 - Labeled 2014
 - Labeled QUARTER BITCOIN

Hologram Labels
https://i.imgur.com/DfPOfkY.png https://i.imgur.com/tdnA4Vv.png

 - 13mm x 2mm transparent window
 - Honeycomb release for tamper evidence
 - Security edge slits for tamper evidence

.010 btc / sheet of 16 labels
.005 btc / blank coin
.001 btc / air-tite w/ rubber ring (max = # coins ordered)

Shipping

.04  Worldwide

Software - not required
Here is some scripts to help create addresses and labels to go under the holograms
with instructions on how to use them in Ubuntu.
https://github.com/jondale/serpcoin

These scripts are not required.
You can create your own addresses and make your own labels to go under the hologram just fine.

I am now sold out of all coins.  I still have sheets of holograms available if you want them.

Wow, these look nice. And I like that they're in 'Quarter' denominations, as opposed to the higher BTC0.5 and BTC1.0 I see around.

Cool, interested in buying a couple of the blank bitcoins.  Tell me, could you add an inscription on the back for them, like saying:  "Proud owner of bitcoins since_____"  Or something like that, I would defiantly buy.

Hrmm.. I'm not sure I have a way to engrave the coins with a custom message yet.  I am not sure a laser would work on a surface this reflective without possibly damaging the mirrors.  If you decide you want a few blanks or whatever just let me know.

Would like to buy 16 blanks and one 16 package label.  Ship to the UK?  Also, do you have any labels or something that contain an address or private key so we could use these coins to give to other people as presants?

Sure you can, send me a private message and we'll work out the details.

As for address/private key, I have some software I'm releasing here soon that will let you create your own private keys/addresses on labels.  I'll see if I can get that up quickly.  This would be a more secure method of getting your keys.  That way you don't have to trust me.  The software will basically create a few images files that you print out on paper (front and back).  If you still need help after that then message me and I'll try and help.

The below code is not required.  I just wanted to clear up a bit of confusion from questions I've received.  You can create private/public keys from any source you want and create any design you want to go under the holograms.  The below is just some code that can help with this process if you want to use it.

This code is a combination of python and php scripts.  I have included instructions and a shell script to get it up and going on Ubuntu as that's what I use for this.

The code is hosted at https://github.com/jondale/serpcoin
You can download a zip of the scripts directly  here  (https://github.com/jondale/serpcoin/archive/master.zip).

I hope to put up a few template images here soon so if you are not comfortable using these scripts then you could use those to just add the information you want.

I used the script to create 25 labels and below is the result:

https://i.imgur.com/CcMCdoE.png
Front side of the page.

https://i.imgur.com/Pce1CL3.png
Back side of the page.

https://i.imgur.com/Sy8Jyqz.png
Cut out the label and folded it.
This is the inside.

https://i.imgur.com/3ciEKeS.png
And the outside.

https://i.imgur.com/zZ4aDU2.png
Attached to  rolled up painter's tape.

https://i.imgur.com/EOYMqRk.png
Aligned and attached to the sticky side of the hologram.

https://i.imgur.com/ldTAis0.png
The bitcoin address showing through the transparent window.

I highly recommend using painter's tape (thanks casascius for this tip) to align and attach labels.  The cheap brown kind is the best because it barely sticks which is what you want.  It makes aligning and being precise so much easier than any other way I've tried.  With the honeycomb release, messing up can ruin a hologram and nobody wants that.

Tracking is included for US.

For outside the US, it has depended on your country.  I have shipped flat rate priority for all outside the US so far.  To guarantee tracking you have to bump it up to the non-flat rate priority which generally would have raised the cost another $15-$20.  So, I could add the option of guaranteed tracking for another .02 if that interests anyone.

Just an update on tracking worldwide.  As long as you are ordering coins (and not just hologram sheets) then a customs form will be filled out and this will give a code which can be tracked via USPS.  How detailed it is depends on your country.  This comes with the standard shipping rate quoted in the original post.

Thanks everyone.   I worked hard on these so it feels good when people like them.

As an update, my shipment of more airtite cases should be in Monday and so those who ordered but wanted to hold until then should have their shipments go out Tuesday morning.

I still have many hologram sheets left but I'm down to < 200 coins now.

OMG!! Don't do this! ALL Kinkos, Office machines, and copy stations have a memory card and harddrive imbedded into the machines. This means that everything that you scan and print into them will be permanently attached to the device, and more often then not the machine will be either looked at when its dying or resold to another person. People are buying these exactly for this reason of looking up information that is supposed to be private! PLEASE be safe!

Thanks for reviewing the code Todamont.  The key generation code is largely based off the code on the bitcoin wiki just changed to use more cryto safe randoms and a few minor other changes to make it work with the scripts.

Also I agree with others here.. I cannot suggest ever printing your private keys on a publicly available printer.  Personally, I don't want to print them even on a printer that is connected to a network even.

I believe I've caught up with everyone now and I'm sold out of coins.  I still have sheets of holograms.

0.05 btc sent for 5 extra sheets. May as well have spares. I think I'll pick up a few Recalescence coins too, now that they are cheaper but no hologram included, these holo's should fit perfectly :)

They look nice.
It's a pity they are already sold out.

On the other hand I wonder how I could trust the coin if it wasn't created by myself but given to me by a third party.
Even with the hologram intact who guarantees that there is a valid private key below it.

Well I bought 16 of them for the sole purpose of giving to friends and family... I wouldn't trust buying a pre loaded one either...
I handed out 5 of them as stocking stuffers and the family thought they were really cool.  The downside was I had to explain what a Bitcoin was about 15 times... they still have no idea lol

I'm reselling sets of 4 at 0.044 shipped anywhere in the US, or plus shipping if not in the US. I'll include 5 holograms with each set of 4 coins, so if you mess up the first one you are still good. I have 10 sets for sale.

Is it down for you?  It's working for me.  The logs aren't showing any interruptions in traffic.

You doing larger sized this time?

There were 500 of DIY.
There will be 1000 of DIY2.
Dimensions of the coin are the same but DIY2 will be gold plated and have a recess in the back for the private key tab.

Sweet! The gold plating sounds great, what base metal though? The recess is a great addition BC for v1 one can see the hologram quite obviously below (which is good and bad I guess =D ).

The base metal will be a zinc alloy like the first ones.
