Title: Introducing BitTicker - Bitcoin Clock [ Physical ]
Post by: Stake on December 18, 2013, 05:04:56 AM
We would like to introduce BitTicker.

BitTicker is a digital clock — but rather than showing the current time, it shows the current Bitcoin price measured against USD.

Pre-orders now available here.  Enter valid e-mail and shipping address.  All BitTickers will be sent to the shipping address provided. (https://coinbase.com/checkouts/d2acdd31c026aaee4c4dea46c4fafffb)

Some cool features included in the BitTicker:

  • Priced affordably at $29.99 (payable with Bitcoin!)
  • Options between MT.gox, Bitstamp, and Coinbase on the Ticker.
  • Simple to set-up.  Connect to WiFi and ready to go.
  • Updates every 3 seconds - uses as little bandwidth as physically possible.
  • Easy to mount on a wall - place it above a desktop and easily see the price live!

The proprietary software for BitTicker is completed and we recently acquired a hardware engineer and are finalizing the product (the hardware engineer will be done with his work in 5 days and we will be producing large amounts of BitTickers in 28 days.  Pre-orders will ship in 35 days).

Example of the BitTicker in an office:

http://puu.sh/5QjA2.jpg

http://puu.sh/5QjIl.png

The BitTicker is 24 inches wide and 10 inches tall (61 cm wide and 25.5 cm tall).

Pre-orders launch tomorrow.  If interested in purchasing many, or for any other business inquiries you can PM me.

We are very excited to get this off the ground running and appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.

Can we see pictures of the actual design prototype?

I'm very, very interested in this. Would look nice on my wall while I'm trading.

As stated in the first post our hardware engineer is currently working on it. The prototype is almost finished but the proprietary software is done. Physical pictures will be posted when we have our prototype. The pictures in the original post accurately represent what it will look like.

We are sorry - but can't wait to show pictures and let you pre-order!

How much is shipping? I'll order one once the prototype images are shown displaying the actual product itself. Does it take batteries?

Yes it runs on batteries.  Shipping on the first 1,000 orders is covered by us. :P

How many digits does the display has? Will it be enough for the future?  ;)

It can fit five figures well - six figures would be cramming it.

In the event BTC ever reach six figures, we will adapt the width.

Valid concern.

A few questions:

- Will the firmware be upgradable in the future if Gox/Stamp/Coinbase go under/change APIs?
- Will the firmware be open such that I could modify it to display other things if I wanted to at some point?
- What's the expected runtime on a set of batteries?

I'm probably in for at least two.

Thanks for your questions.  None of these answers are 100% concrete but this is what you should expect.

-Yes.
-At some point - maybe.  As of now, we'll have to say no.
-Months

I'd be interested in it if it were twice the height with the second line able to be linked to say my blockchain.info account to show the combined total of all my wallets like the smartphone app does.

I would be interested if the software was open source, or at least if it was possible to be able to select more currency pairs (fiat & crypto) and from more exchanges.

Would like the option to point it at arbitrary URLs to display the things I want.

That would be a useful compromise to fully open firmware - if I can point it at a URL that returns a string to display, that's probably good enough for most needs.

Pre-orders have now been opened to anyone interested in purchasing.

I think you should at least show some sort of physical product before accepting pre-orders.

EDIT: This could potentially be a scam, proceed with some caution: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=376783.0

Sorry - forgot to respond.  We will take this into consideration for now.

Producing different heights could complicate the production.

Well, it could be a model B, where as the model A is the one already planned. But I would definately buy if a model B was made.

Yes - if it wasn't able to, the majority of people wouldn't be able to use it.

Still a valid concern.

Thanks.

We will send a link with the shipping information when it ships to the e-mail provided on checkout.

Thanks.

Is there a way to pay with a standard credit card?  I'm a bit hesitant to send bitcoin for preorders. :)

Not right now.  We have been looking into Stripe (https://stripe.com) - but the advantage of Bitcoin as you know is that there are much less fees and it's much easier to accept.

We will be soon though.

Yes, I'm quite aware...

But you don't even have a physical demo product yet.

Many people are choosing to wait for the prototype images to be posted and many are not.

You can wait for them to be posted here if you'd prefer - but accepting Stripe at this time isn't yet possible.

The official website will be launching in the coming weeks and you can purchase with Credit/Debit Card or Bitcoin then.

We are sorry for the wait.  We were so excited and wanted to get something up while we wait for the hardware to be created.

We've sold an upwards of 80 (had one bulk order) so far in the day that pre-orders have been open.

You can purchase now to get it as soon as possible or feel free to wait till it officially launches to purchase (shipping costs included if not pre-ordered).

Thanks.

I'd be interested in a smaller one for my office. 2 feet long seems a bit extreme for personal use.

Ooh sounds very neat! I ordered one for my store :), couldn't change the quantity though. I'd like a total of 3, one for each location, offering any bulk discounts?

And to confirm, can I take the price from mtgox, and add like 5% for my customers price?

Great to hear you pre-ordered.  Sorry you couldn't change the quantity - we'll fix that.

You can get a discount for bulk orders.  We don't consider 3 a bulk-order at this time though.

Currently it will only show the price from the exchange you select on the product - but you can tell your customers it's the price on it + 5%.  Sorry you can't optimize it like that yet.

A shame.  I looked into making a similar product and it would have been at least $100.  The $30 price was pretty much too good to be true for any quantities that were not five digits long.

A Rasperry pi, power supply, case, display and wireless adapter cost in the range of $80

All of these items are not the same as a nice compact box purpose built maybe in wood with just the data wanted and nothing else.

I ordered before the thread got going and I didn't look that close.  Usually I check a little closer.  I try to order all these things from Bitcoin vendors and so far I have never lost out.  I ordered all kinds of stuff like caramels, hot sauce, vanilla extract, a bunch of stuff from conscious cookery, neon signs, etc.  I just ordered a wood engraved wallet and one of those aluminum engraved wallet cards.  if I lose out on this then I will live with it.  He is using Coinbase and had to be verified so if I don't get delivery it will be reported to them and they will have to file a Suspicious Activity Report with FinCEN.  Not that anybody is going to do anything over a $30 ticker but at least there will be a record.  I sent him an e-mail and asked for a delivery date.

I see some Android tablets as low as $35.  I can't believe the number of ticker apps.  I am putting together a list at http://bitcointicker.com/.  So far I have over 50 iPhone ticker apps and I am not done with that.  I have a few Android ones up there but there are probably at least that many for Android.

30$ seems to cheap.... Obviously a scam i dont think he would have all this mass produced to make it that price.

I could make this product for 100$, if anyone is interested......
Rasberry Pi + small LCD....

Dam ill even make a nice little gui and make it touchscreen if you are lucky...
hmmmmmmm maybe cheaper to use a cheapo 50$ android phone from china and custom write a app, and turn of sleep...
