Title: Are bitcoins even worth it anymore if you have a weak machine..
Post by: samy109 on August 18, 2011, 09:07:48 PM
I'm currently doing 250 MHS and i'm not even sure if that's worth it being I only make 30 to 40 a month... Any suggestions on how to improve or the like? I have no money but if I could sell my graphics card and get a 5870 I could make a good 730 MHS and would be a bit more worth it at around 130 a month.

it all depends on how much your kw/h is, a single 5870 would only bank you about 400-420 mh/s

not sure where you are getting your numbers.

a 5870 will range from 340 mhash/s to up over 400 depending on a few factors: http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison#AMD_.28ATI.29

so even if you got 440 mhash/s from it, let's say, that's 7.45 BTC/month at current difficulty, or about $82.00 usd -- and that is assuming difficulty does not increase: http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php

i don't mean to say it won't be a good move, just wanted to make sure this was clarified.

also, your title makes it sound like the only value bitcoins have are for mining and selling.

No with my 8800gts g92 + 5770 + 5870, sorry forgot to clarify, 200 + 300 - 400 + 30 So around 530 - 630

Do you mean 30 to 40 dollars or bitcoins?

The question is whether running a GPU is profitable, whether you have 1 GPU or 100 is of no consequence to profitability. And the electrical cost of minting a coin is still FAR outstripped by its exchange rate. The only question is whether you should specifically invest in a GPU for mining purposes...

I only get about 63 MH/s using my GeForce 460 GTX and 1 core of my CPU, and I stop the CUDA miner to play games, yet I still mine.

Although I don't have to pay the electric bill so power usage isn't a concern for me.  :-D
