Title: Newbie Intro and Question on SHA-256 Threats
Post by: mikoi777 on December 22, 2013, 10:57:08 AM

Hello Folks, I'm looking forward to becoming a full member to participate in all the interesting discussions on this board.  I've been aware of Bitcoin since early 2012, and as a software developer entertained the thought of developing bitcoin-related apps, but never got involved in mining until the last 2 months.  I am now taking my first baby steps in ASIC mining just as a learning experience and hoping to decide whether it will become more serious or not.

My question is on the potential threat to SHA-256 namely quantum computing.  Though we are far from a practical quantum computer, at least from what's publicly known, is there any plan already in place for how the Bitcoin protocol will adapt once that moment happens?  How would the protocol and entire network adapt in a timely enough way so that a quantum computer attack would not do serious damage or steal accounts?

Regards!
