Title: In your mind what is a "good" amount of Bitcoin for a newb to hold and be proud?
Post by: Sagiv on December 22, 2013, 09:39:39 PM
I know it's a completely arbitrary question, but what number pops into your head?

I'm a newb and have just gotten up to 5 BTC and I'm proud to hit that number.

That would be over $12k at current prices! Definitely something to be proud of but probably out of reach for a newb (which I am, too). I'd stick with your 5, which is awesome, then try diversifying into some other coins which are much cheaper and have the potential to grow faster than btc...

There is no right or wrong answer. Anyone who asks how much they should be holding clearly does not have the mental fortitude that's necessary as an investor in a volatile commodity such as bitcoin and is likely to get burned in the long run. Bottom line, if you're committed to this, go ahead and invest, but not anymore than you're willing to lose...

If the newbie only has $100 in fiat, 0.1 BTC is a very big investment but a very rich newbie ($1 000 000+) might say 10 BTC isn't very much.

Which ones are you looking at? I have a feeling at least a few more alt coins are gonna explode like bitcoin as bitcoin keeps growing.

I'm new to cryptocurrencies, but right now, I like anoncoin (because it'll be even more anonymous than bitcoin), fastcoin (because it's got the fastest transaction times) and bitbar and unobtanium (due to scarcity). I am doing a series of blog posts where I try to rate every cryptocoin in existence (http://crypt.la/crypto-currency-database/), though, so as I get going with that, I'm sure I'll discover some other gems!

What are you looking at?

Instead of talking absolute numbers, you should talk about the percentage Bitcoin makes up in your investments.

People of different ages and walks of life will value 5 BTC vastly different.

Owning 1 bitcoin is a great achivement at this point. Soon it will be unreachable for most people.

Given that the average American doesn't even hold a retirement account (I'm American so yes I'm going to be US-centric), and many live paycheck to paycheck, I'd say 1 bitcoin is already "out of reach" for the "average" person.

This is true. People who live from paycheck to paycheck can perhaps save $100 per month which means that they can probably get 1 bitcoin if they keep investing that $100 into bitcoins each month, but it requires some dedication and is becoming more difficult as time goes on.

This is just how it is, and I believe that changing to mBTC is quite refreshing in this sense.

2.1 or 21 if you can afford it.

21 bitcoins means that you will have one millionth of all bitcoins ever created (2.1 means one ten millionth).

So less than a million people could ever have more bitcoins than you.

At 2100 bitcoins (the Vladmir club) there could only be less than 10,000 people with more bitcoins than you.

As others said, there is no "good" amount to hold, I think a newb should get into bitcoin progressively, decide a certain amount you want to convert each month and buy, let's say $500 a month. If a particular month is THE "bubble month", hold it for the next or wait and buy on a deep

Think it has less to do with someone being a "newb" or not and more to do with their financial situation if they are buying their bitcoins since it costs fiat to buy them.

5 is also the number I aim to own long-term.  I currently own a few more, which I plan to slowly sell as the price goes up.  I am hoping to be freerolling with 5 :)

5BTC is a lot for a newb at today’s prices. Makes sure you've got your funds secured and remember to only invest what you can afford to lose.

There is no such thing as a 'good' amount of bitcoin to hold. Whether a newbie or veteran, each person has different circumstances and matching the two together simply does not work.

If the entire 21M pool of Bitcoins were evenly distributed to every single person on earth, each person would have around .00033333 BTC. I'd say if you have a whole integer Bitcoin, you're doing good.

Any novice that can securely generate a 1-bitcoin paper wallet (clean, single-output, new address) has every reason to be proud.  Such a feat would require, research, persistence, risk-tolerance, and significantly above average computer skills.  Holding it for about 3 years (accruing 1000 bitcoin-days) will suggest an understanding of Bitcoin and a strength of mind that few seem able to muster.

As much as you can afford to lose overnight..  I beleive in a bright future for Bitcoin.. but it's like anything.. never invest more than you can afford to lose..  imo, within a decade, bitcoins will be more valuable for their purchasing power rather than their value in fiat currency.

Proud? WTF? Stinks of ego or ignorance. I know pedants can be a bore but I'm bored and wondered exactly what pride is as defined by OED.

From the Oxford English Dictionary at oed.com. (bold added by me)

proud, adj., n., and adv.
1. Having a high or exalted opinion of one's own worth or importance. Usually in a negative sense: disposed to feeling superior; having inordinate self-esteem; haughty, arrogant.

2. Of an action, a feeling, etc.: arising from or expressive of pride.

3. Feeling greatly honoured, pleased, or satisfied by something which or someone who does one credit; acutely aware of some honour done to oneself, taking pride in something. Also more generally (chiefly in early use): gratified, pleased, glad (now regional). Freq. with of, infinitive, or that-clause.

4. Having a sense of what befits, is due to, or is worthy of oneself or one's position; characterized by self-respect; feeling or showing a proper pride.

I'm not proud to own my bitcoins, but I'm definitely happy to be participating in something that could potentially revolutionize the world, esp. in poorer nations.

As much as you can afford to lose, which is by the logic I followed. Bitcoin is still very volatile. If you're putting fiat into bitcoin as a investment, try to see the longterm rather than possible short term gains. That said, I do have high hopes but do keep the risks in mind before you turn everything into BTC. :)

Honestly don't even think about how many BTC you get, but rather how much it costs to get you so much if you're investing fiat into it. Probably a bit more healthy way to approach it even if reaching certain barrier of BTC might seem more psychologically satisfying.

Haha, maybe 'smug' would be a better word:

smug  (smg)
adj. smug·ger, smug·gest
Exhibiting or feeling great or offensive satisfaction with oneself or with one's situation; self-righteously complacent.

Only remember one thing that you must not invest more than what you can’t afford to lose as any form of trading you do holds a risk. By the way I have 30
