Title: running miners in stealth mode?
Post by: tonto on August 19, 2011, 07:28:41 PM
Hey y'all (directed at miner coders, but anyone can answer) is there a way to either currently or in a future patch run miners in "stealth" mode?  like in Windows have an option where, for instance, guiminer might have a mode after configuring it that it's hidden and only shows up in Task Manager (either as it's exe name, or even a configurable process name)?

same question for linux.. maybe able to set up and then run on startup in the background?  Note I'm not very good in linux CLI, but given instructions I could follow them if this is already possible (like maybe a cron job or something)

I'm also interested in this concept.

In linux, just edit the PATH=, name bitcoin something like 'bash' and put it in /home/.../bash, drop ~/... first in the path and type bash. It'll show up in ps as bash.

You can use a cron to restart it.

Also, bitcoin mining is probably the least possible stealthiest thing in the world when it comes to resource abuse.

So people who write proof-of-concept viruses are out to do harm, too?   Are people who speed out to cause anarchy?  Jesus, if you *must* know, I have *one* machine at work that I was thinking of putting a miner on.  This machine can only do about 100Mhash/sec, so I don't know why you're going on this huge crusade.

I'm not looking to write any bots, I haven't coded anything significant since 1993.   There, you can all sleep at night now.    Christ, a simple "yes or no" would have sufficed.

So you ARE planning a theft of resources.  Therefore, the accusations against you were correct.

One machine he uses at work is far from a bot net though accusations right? Yes. Scale? way off

It's still not theft. Is going to the staff room and drinking the company coffee and milk theft as well? Is using company toilet paper theft? Is going onto the Bitcoin forums during work time also theft?

I run a space heater during the winter and a fan during the summer.  That's "stealing" of resources, too.  I also write personal notes on company-purchased sticky-notes, I read Facebook during the day (and the reading of Facebook is not one of my job duties), and I stop to talk to the cute secretary nearly every day, wasting a good ten minutes of both our work-day.

I'm willing to bet 99.9% of anyone reading these forums does any of these things, all considered "stealing" company resources.

Running a bitcoin miner on a company computer is theft.  It's misuse of company resources and theft of electricity.

And you know this.

If it's not theft, if it's not wrong, why were you asking how to hide it?

Bitcoin has enough bad press, enough people who think it's a scam, enough people who think it's shady, without you doing shady things with with it.

Again, if what you are planning is NOT shady, then why are you asking how to hide it?  Why do you admit you might get fired if they found out?

What you plan is wrong and you know it.

Good Lord, yes, it's wrong.  So are all the things I mentioned above.  Why did no one give this much shit to the guy who admitted to stealing electricity at the expense of your (our) tax dollars?   Since he's military (well I think he is), does that make it right or something?  He's doing the exact same thing that I'm doing, except not at his company.   My way affects you nil (other than helping to raise the difficulty by about .000001%.

I think you'll see similar responses to the one that you got in most threads about stealing electricity or mining at work.  The one you specified is an exception.

for example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=37021.msg455201#msg455201

Look, you do what you want.  You are correct that it does not affect me.  Just try not to give Bitcoin a bad name.

+1

Could stop criticizing and trying to give an intelligent response.
