Title: Windows update anyone else got wrecked?
Post by: rubine2323 on May 15, 2018, 09:02:25 AM
Iam wondering if nobody else got wrecked from the ongoing security update in windows?

Running since 4 Months with Windows updates disabled but the last update happend was not stoppable.
Any ideas how to block windows "restart for updates"?

Ive to restart my rigs through the cmd to not force the update on restart. Any ideas how to prevent this or delete the ongoing update on restart?

had updates disabled and defender for years who needs them on a dedicated mining box

disable them using gpedit.exe

Use gpedit.msc and "enable" both windows update shut off and windows defender (anitvirus). This can leave your mining rig somewhat vulnerable, make sure your network is secure prior to doing this.

Windows 10 in various scenarios will turn windows update back if all you do is disable the service.
Easiest way I found to disable updates in Windows 10 is to goto the Windows update Service property window, disable it, then goto the Log On tab at the top and click This account: and type ".\Guest"(no quotes), clear the password fields and click apply.
You will get a message saying Guest has been enabled to do this, but the hitch is that "Guest" doesn't have permission to do it so Windows update is basically disabled no matter what unless you switch it back which is just as easy.

So windows 10 updated and now I cant reinstall drivers. I have tried almost everything i know to do. I went ahead and used the clean utility and tried to install blockchain drivers but fails now. What is the suggested route to take at this point?

UPDATE: Rolled the update back and working as it was. It was very simple and took less than 10 mins to revert which is amazing. All programs, wallets and drivers still intact.

We have been using this little program for over a year now and it has worked perfectly for us. It's as easy as a couple of clicks and you won't have to worry about Windows Updates anymore. https://www.sordum.org/9470/windows-update-blocker-v1-1/

Updated windows and nothing worked anymore.  Miners just sat there.  Even other programs were affected... VPN access was all sorts of messed up and just wouldn't start giving ridiculous error messages that weren't there before the update.

Reverted to saved checkpoint and all is fine.  windows needs to do better.

The quickest permanent fix is to reimage with a proper linux mining OS.

Mining in Windows is like taking the short bus to school...sure it gets you there, but everyone else will be laughing at you ( and profiting over you )

I have 350 Windows rigs and 1300 Linux rigs. I can tell you it takes more support time to keep those 350 running than the entire lot of 1300 rigs.

Not sure how using the proper tool is annoying. Learning stimulates the brain, give it a try :D

Not true at all, on Windows 10 you almost NEVER have a need to update, only thing you need updating is your GPU driver if you move to new miner!
On linux if you compile from source you need TONS of updates all the time! even when using bins you will have dozen of compatibility issues
I use both system for mining, and sure if you are expert in linux you can automate updates, etc but that ask you know a lot about linux, on Windows you just need to know how to disable update and that ALL, sorry to hear some ppl don`t know even to do that on proper way! I just can imagine them in linux (well I can`t it would not work at all)  ;D

Also I agree if you have programmers work for you and system admins automating linux is almost with no limit so that can help a lot, but those kind of support have only big evil farms as jihan and such ;)

The best way to avoid this is to upgrade to Business grade Windows software.

Also the howtogeek posted 4-5 posts above this one is legit.

The Home editions of Windows 10 don't have gpedit, and I've been unsuccessful at trying to get it on one of my Home mining rigs, but it's still possible to disable updates and Windows Defender from the registry IIRC if you do use Home (link to disable Defender here (https://www.ghacks.net/2015/10/25/how-to-disable-windows-defender-in-windows-10-permanently/)). I overall agree with simply using Linux to get around this like everyone else has already said, though, but I do understand the rationale for using Windows for mining- that being said, using Linux does have its advantages, and it's up to you to decide whether or not they outweigh the advantages of Windows in the end.

It doesn't matter what version of W10, you are using. Eventually when you least expect it, you will wake up and one of your rigs will be in the middle of an update.

This Is an issue if you got old ass single core CPUs like the Sempron or old ass 5400rpm laptop HDD and basically the update usually freezers.

You do a hard power reset and in 2-3 days the updates will try and start again.

Only way is to either stop mining, do updates and when they are done continue.

Or you need to block your DNS or put everything behind a firewall except your miner software.

These reg edit hacks don't work, I've tried them all.

@adaseb
You are wrong, I have dozen of mining rigs and 1000+ I administrate and never ever one updated itself alone, its always noob fault

Sure I use only pro version so I can disable update the right way (gpedit.msc and change automatic update policy!)

ssme lol 😂 if youre using anything less than pro where u cant do group policy edits you have yourself to blame
i never had a box update itself with auto updates turned off in gpedit and that trash defender turned off too
