Title: Whittled the list down to three (PC question)
Post by: pandemic on August 21, 2011, 02:35:06 AM
It's coming down to GPU. I have the option of getting either NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M (http://"http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-540M.41715.0.html") or the AMD Radeon HD 6490M (http://"http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6490M.43843.0.html")

I can either get a
HP Pavilion DV6-6155CA (http://"http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157945") for $720
MSI FX620DX-256US (http://"http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152264") for $730
ASUS A53 Series A53SV-XN1 (http://"http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230089") for $750

Each has:
Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz 3MB L3 Cache Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
6GB DDR3
640GB or 750GB HDD
1GB GDDR5 video memory

The Asus has 1 year of accidental damage warranty which is pretty nice but otherwise I can't really decide. The HP looks better and has a fingerprint scanner. Otherwise it's coming down to the GPU. What do you think?

it should be nearly entirely about the gpu: http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

Good point but I'm not planning on mining with this machine. If I were, it'd be AMD.

These all seem to be fairly standard consumer grade pc's not normally my forte(business laptops normally for me w510 thinkpad currently) due to prefrence and their general projected lifespans however the decision here seems clear on the msi for 2 reasons.
1. Hp is looking to close their pc division any future support is uncertain.
2. The asus is out of stock assuming you intend to order from newegg that leaves only the msi.
I would like to throw this in for your consideration as an alternative however, normally i use thinkpads this is the consumer equivelent.

Edit: there were 4 of that machine in stock when i orginally wrote that post and are now 0(i went to show it to a friend of mine) the only other laptop i would reccomend is 1200 dollars and is probably far our of budget in place of the 730 dollar msi
