Title: How to ruin Dogecoin
Post by: toast on December 25, 2013, 10:56:19 PM
http://www.reddit.com/r/dogecoin/comments/1tp40b/dogecoin_is_broken_merry_christmas/

It's a race! Which will happen first, developers raise tx and get all miners to update, or will pissed of BTC seriouspantses destroy the network?

Couldn't this be applied to any high circulating altcoin?

Sounds more like a form of attack. The solution would be for sites like that to detect and block attempts to harm the chain.

DeVCoin mints 50,000 coins per block since back when bitcoin was minting 50 coins per block, thus from the start its fees were set as 1000 times as large as bitcoin's plus an anti-dustspam feature was added that bitcoin didn't have itself back in those days.

Bitcoin now has anti-dustspam too, it seems reasonable that DeVCoin's should be at least 1000 times bitcoin's. (Likely at least 2000 times now that bitcoin only mints 25 coins per block while DeVCoin will go on minting 50,000 per block forever).

DOGE mints on average 10 times as many coins as DeVCoin so it seems reasonable its fees and anti-dust ought to be somewhere in the neighborhood of ten times those of DeVCoin.

They didn't do this from the get-go? Hmmm. What kind of amateurs built the thing? Is it a hack-job by people who didn't know what they were doing?

Dogecoin will be destroyed pretty quickly now that this is public unless the devs step up. Guess this is what happens when you try to make a joke a viable currency.

I don't think it's that dire. No doubt there will be an attack. An update will quickly show itself, and the vulnerability fixed.

Again, this doesn't just apply to Dogecoin. It's more of a website flaw. It's a form of spam.

Hmm funny script. I have enough coins to just give it a run. Do you want a bigger blockchain?  ;D

to be honest I think the devs may have missed this because their original intent had been some fun not really expecting the huge interst the coin generated.

the worry is how many of the "serious" coins have the devs missed this on?

I'm pretty sure this is only a problem with coins that have a huge money supply but are still highly divisible. Most serious coins have tweaked the minimum size / fee to make this infeasible (or at least very expensive). Remember gavin's 5.4*10^(-??) controversy?

WOW! There are so many Dogecoin haters out there. Why? Are you upset that your alt-coin failed to command the attention that Doge has commanded in less than a month.

Google your alt-coin and see the "About Results" number. That will tell you how much interest your alt-coin is commanding. I'll put together a spread sheet once I recover from the egg nog.  But just as a quick example --- Dogecoin resulted in about 1,900,000 results on Google, Feathercoin came in at around 1,730,000 while Devcoin resulted in a little over 100,000 results. Wow! Dev-what, Dev-who?

Don't be upset that a new coin is surpassing the alt-coin that you purchased or mined. If (when) Dogecoin succeeds in enhancing the public's awareness of crypto-currencies ALL coins will prospers, so stop hating.

Another thing, I guarantee that Dogecoin will NOT be ruined by presently reported issue.

Hmm.. the last time I checked the prices, dogecoin was way below the 250 satoshi peak. Has it even reached 100 again? Doubt it.
With 100 billion market cap, the coin won't be worth anything anytime soon. It's a fun coin. That is totally ok. And it helps to bring new buyers into cryptocoins. Hopefully they read a little bit and invest in more innovative and better coins than doge.

Dogecoin should be the bridge between the common folk and the crypto nerds.

Agreed, there are much better coins to attack than doge. Dogecoin community acknowledges that it's just for fun and that nobody should take it seriously.

You are correct sir. Dogecoin is the bridge between the average person and the crypto-nerd. This is why it's important that it succeeds. Because when it does, the average person will be better equipped to understand crypto which opens the doors for existing alt-coins and those to come. Doge's success will the the success of the entire crypto-currency world.

Dogecoin is a success if it can stay @ 100 satoshi per dogecoin. That would be very good. But I expect heavy price flucuations and that will scare every average person.
Pump and Dump coins are not really helpfull to build trust with the average person.

If it can oscillate between 30-or-thereabouts and 200, 250 or 350 or thereabouts like DeVCoin has it will be doing okay - and hopefully by then DeVCoin will be ranging from 5 to 15 times the DOGE price or thereabouts.

Mirsad,

I agree, pump and dump hurts the crypto-currency world. But what if Facebook adopted Dogecoin? It's popular right now and silly, but gets the job done like every other crypto. This 'what if' would be HUGE for all crypto's.

I've said before, that a "weakness" that many point to (100,000,000,000 Dogecoins) is actually a strength. The average Facebook user is more likely to want to see whole numbers in their accounts than .002345 (as with Bitcoin). So this percevied weakness actually works for Dogecoin.

The community surrounding Dogecoin seems to be a different one compared to the community surrounding other alt-coins. Dogecoin's is larger and not as tech oriented as let's say Devcoin.

There's a lot going for Dogecoin right now and like I've said, when Dogecoin succeeds, the crypto-currency world will go mainstream and that will be a good thing for all coins, including Devcoin.

But we need some things:

Secure wallets with 2 factor authentification.
Sending and receiving coins with email addresses or usernames instead of the actual wallet address.

It has to be easy and safe to use for the average person. Then it will big a BIG, BIG success.

But doge has such a huge hype -> why not do something usefull instead of only hodling coins?

First useful thing is to pile up a vast vast pile of buy orders at the low end of the buy order-book, enough to buy up all the coins minted per day and proceeding onward from there to enough to buy up all the coins already minted.

Time enough then to spare a few coins from up-holding the exchange rate to offer some bounties to the bitcoin developers to get some new good things added to bitcoin so all the bitcoin-derived coins will inherit such goodies...

The only reason altcoins aren't mainstream is because it still requires some basic technical knowledge to get a wallet setup and the likes. When altcoins do become mainstream, you don't think a huge company like Facebook is just going to ignore such a trend?

Doesn't Facebook have it's own crude form of currency? If it sees how popular alt currencies are, why wouldn't they buy one up that's already popular?

Isn't that classic big company behaviour? Wait until something's mainstream, then buy it up.

Maybe not Dogecoin, but still.

Its not like it is technically hard or anything.

With how often new altcoins are released, why would Facebook, a multi-billion dollar company not just hire someone to develop their own Facebook Coin?

Seems like people are releasing new coins by themselves out of their basement lately. The only thing that sets dogecoin apart right now is it's massive casual following and the huge coin base that makes it so accessible.

Huh? It wouldn't, how could they hope to ever secure its blockchain?

It'd be secured by facebookcoin ASICs.

Who would they sell such ASICs to, and why?

The argument I was responding to assumed for the sake of the argument that they would deploy a decentralised coin didn't it?

If not then well yeah duh of course they would use Open Transactions or their own custom crypto-secured currency software.

Me, catching knives? Huh? The most I'd be doing is forum-trolling as usual and maybe putting in buy offers starting at one satoshi per coin each time some idiot buys more than one coin from me at more than one satoshi per coin.

(That is, use some fraction of the whatevercoins I get from selling DOGE at more than X satoshis to place an order to buy more at less than X satoshis. Knife? What knife? All the whatevercoins I'd offer to buy with would be just a portion of the profits I already made.)

As far as I know it was just one guy who stole the meme of 2013 and source code that was publicly available. He put out a few press releases and because idiots adopted his joke coin he made thousands. He made the coin as a comment on how stupid people like you are. And here you are. Living proof of humanities stupidity. He's laughing all the way to the bank and you'll be catching knives.

Are you calling MarkM stupid? Although he has an opposing viewpoint than mine, he comes across as an informed and articulate individual.

You on the other hand are poorly informed. Google is your friend --- it wasn't one guy for starters. http://spelunk.in/2013/12/17/discover-dogecoin-currency-for-the-internet/

Second in terms of articulating your argument, it isn't very polite to come into a conversation and call someone stupid.

Merry Christmas.

stupid is as stupid do(g)es

Mr. Dogecoin (the creator) is already aware of the issue and will fix it, so relax guys.  It's not the end of the world.

How is he going to fix it? Transactions fees are still a great unsolved issue in Bitcoin after five years of debating.

it's a joke coin where people took it way too seriously.

It's the adopters that set the value of the coin. Not the devs.

What will it take to cause this chap to agree more?

Maybe he is capable of more agreement than he realises and merely needs more motivation or inspiration?

I hope it dies off. This coin is an embarrassment for the crypto coin community. To many noobs showed up right as it launched. Now it stuck. It offers no innovation to cryptos.

I don't understand... just 1 year ago the Bitcoin community would have done anything to make Bitcoin mainstream and get as many people involved as possible.

Now accessible coins like doge come along and suddenly make "noobs" show up and get interested in cryptocurrency and you complain?

Get off your high horse and stop being such a cynic. Just because you don't like something it doesn't mean the coin is useless. It's spreading *awareness* and that's more than you could ever ask for.

Agreed, there are much better coins to attack than doge. Dogecoin community acknowledges that it's just for fun and that nobody should take it seriously.

Yet people are seriously considering it as an investment.

It's just funny to see so many people hating a coin because they don't like the meme  :D

I don't like it either, but this is fun, even Billy said the coin was just for fun, yet everyone seems to take it way too seriously!!!

Just relax and take the coins with a grain of salt, no one's forcing you too mine it, and if you're investing in things like this for the sole purpose of becoming rich then...well...you're just not doing it right. Never gamble with what you aren't willing to lose, simple. Just relax and enjoy it and go about your lives and don't invest every moment of everyday worrying about it. If you want to do serious trading and investing, then stick to the big coins

No , many beggars come hoping to mine another clone coin with a dog face on it's wallet and hoping to  get rich.
What the bitcoin community is searching for are merchants and business adopting it as a payment solutions , and people paying their employes with bitcoins.

It never needed lunatics mining a clone coin and begging all day with the hope of buying a lambo with 2 doge.

So , hop on your donkey and take your dog with you also.

Bitcoin was born with the principle of freedom in it.
Telling somebody to go somewhere else if they don't like something and denying them to talk about what they see bad in something is against the freedom of speech.
Furthermore , I come with real arguments not stupid trolling.

Yeah , I hate it so much to defend it against FUD , unlike it's stupid supporters who went nuts from a stupid news.

http://techcrunch.com/2013/12/25/dogecoin-hack/

Thats one but there are multiple sources.  =( sigh

A service using doge was hacked.
You know the difference between a website using a crypto and that crypto protocol?

A lot of websites using bitcoins have been hacked , including mtgox.
But the bitcoin protocol has never been hacked.

Spend some more time in the newbie area. With this kind of FUD you're dangerous.

You're the typical zealot , who is not with us is against us.
I'm not. I just hate stupidity.

Just a quick update - Google search results:
Litecoin:      8,140,000
Dogecoin:    5,380,000
Feathercoin:   564,000
Devcoin:        943,000
