Title: What about redesigning BitcoinTalk ? .
Post by: Hazaki on May 17, 2018, 02:57:55 AM
I've been here for a quite sometime now and i really have learned a lot of important stuff about numerous topics more than i did in all the other websites/forums combined .
Yet as a junior web developer, I've always considered the forum to be having a rather poor front end design even tho i understand that it make it much easier for people , new ones especially.
But i really think that the forum needs a total new front end design and i'm sure that there are many talented web designers who already are regulars here and who will be more then apt to do such a job .
I'm not saying that the forum ain't serving it's purpose , or that it's crappy .. I'd just would love seeing it in a better/newer outfit and why not having some other cool functionalities such as :
  • 2FA (Two-factor authentication) since we are seeing people having their accounts hacked all the day ..
  • Instant notifications
  • Smoother layouts
  • A better way to know who quoted/answered  to your posts ..
  • Some form of notification to alert you when getting tagged in a post (@someone )

And a better template in general .. I know that Theymos is busy all the time to do so and this might not be of an interest to either him or those who come here on a daily basis , but such an upgrade will certainly make the whole experience much better (especially for those who spend most of their free time here like me  :D ) .

Ps : I don't really know if this belongs here , but i guess it's more appropriate to post it here rather than off topic ..

Most of this is coming to beta.bitcointalk.org. See New forum software. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0)

The tag notification is cool!! I've joined a forum that has that feature and it is really helpful in calling members attention. If I remember it correctly that forum use Xenforo? Plus they also has a qoute/reply notification feature which is also helpful especially when someone bumped a dead thread. You can also post a status on your profile(which not needed here ;D).

I'm comfortable with the current format, but I  agree that the @tag would be useful.

I wouldn't want the instant notifications, If I'm not logged in, then I'm doing something else, and I probably don't want to be interrupted.

Quote notifications could be useful, However, so many stupid and inconsiderate posters seem to love creating those dreadful quote pyramids, that I would probably turn it off because of the risk of being swamped with notifications that I had to delete.

Well that's in progress since 2014 :)

The things is I haven't seen any major update in forum based websites for ages. Even the latest SMF 2 (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF2.0:Main_Page) is almost similar except from some color changes.
I guess that is the main reason theymos haven't switched to it.

What we are requesting, won't be available out of the box. It requires complex customization, specially for notification and tagging.

Also remember theymos and team working on new bitcoin.org website design (https://bitcoin.cryptopelago.com/) too, so I hope after this they will comeback to bitcointalk.org for some major updates :)

One feature I would love to see in new software will be, by default collapsed quotes in all replies. @Jet Cash gonna love this feature (=^‥^=)

The only addition I'd really like to see is 2FA support. About the cosmetics I don't care so much to be honest, but I might be a bit old school in this regard.

Seriously though, is this project still alive?

  • 2FA (Two-factor authentication) since we are seeing people having their accounts hacked all the day
  • Instant notifications
  • A better way to know who answered to your posts...

  • it’s easy to be added https://www.smfpacks.com/2fa/ (https://www.smfpacks.com/2fa/).
In the end, the responsibility of password protection returns to you and not to the administrators.
  • I do not remember that I received a delay in receiving notifications.
  • Have you tried Show new replies to your posts? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=unreadreplies)?
It's an easy way to find out who answered your post.

And a better template in general
you can try this Dark theme for Bitcointalk(CSS only) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=580171.0)
Also, there are a lot of extensions if you are bored with the current style.

  • it’s easy to be added https://www.smfpacks.com/2fa/ (https://www.smfpacks.com/2fa/).
IIRC, theymos (or was it Void?) already said that the forum software is heavily modified and implementing this kind of "packages" is not that easy.

  • Have you tried Show new replies to your posts? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=unreadreplies)?
It's an easy way to find out who answered your post.
I prefer searching for my username in the Advanced Search (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=search;advanced) page. The "Show new replies to your posts" page is a mess.[/list]

Seriously though, is this project still alive?
There is almost no activity in the github repo :(

Current forum is really good to use and pages are having very less data to load mate. 2FA and tagging are good opinion in this suggestion mate. I think theymos has to take it series else you would not find anything included mate.
Hope you found the New forum software child board in this section. You may write there where is suggestion are welcome I guess.

Check this doc shared by theymos.

It will be a great development adding all this features you mentioned. It will go a long way to make the forum easier to use and more fun as well. Let's see how it plays well in the new version.

Tag will be a great call for it. Nofication to promt your attention will be great addition. But goodluck to the admins if they were tagged most of the time. There should be atleast a restriction before adding this kind of feature
