Post by: JayFromBoston on December 31, 2013, 07:05:32 PM
I downloaded Bitcoin-qt but cannot complete the initial sync because i dont have enough space on my laptop. I want to save my bitcoins on a USB drive. Do i have to complete the sync to do this?

No, just back-up your wallet.dat.

Its default location is on your c drive. You can use command line switches to tell it to use your usb drive instead, like -datadir d:bitcoin

You cannot use Bitcoin-qt without syncing the entire block chain. Try using Electrum or Multibit instead. They work without downloading the entire block chain.

Is there any downside to using Electrum or Multibit vs Bitcoin-qt?

I'd go for Multibit as well - a lot easier to use and!

Thats exactly what I do. I dont keep my wallet.dat on my computer. I have them all on 3 usb drives. 3 backups just to be safe!

Nope, and electrum is easier to backup multiple addresses.

Then how'd you get bitcoins in the first place?

Mine them or buy them.
Then put them in your bitcoin wallet.

Can I use the .conf file to do this or do I need to use the debug window?

Just add it as a switch to your Windows shortcut.

Would be much easier to download electrum portable and install it on your USB drive. No blockchain required.

+1 for Multibit... It's a lot easier than waiting for the block chain to download.. I'll also +1 cold storage as well
