Title: Is Nxt open source?
Post by: bitcool on January 01, 2014, 08:49:50 PM
Remember reading it somewhere it's going to be open sourced on 01/03/2014, but can't find it anymore.

To me it's going to take a leap of faith to download and run the anonymously created program without seeing its source code  >:(

Well, I'm guessing it probably is open source since there are many NXT clones (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=910102) available now which wouldn't be possible if the code wasn't open source. I remember hearing that the core of NXT was open source but some parts under development still weren't but that was several months ago so I'm not sure what the situation is like today. That being said, I'd be surprised if it isn't completely open source by now.

It has opened source a year ago.

Nxt is open source. However, development happens privately and the source for a version is not published until that version is complete and released, so the process isn't completely open, only the result is.

The main repository is at https://bitbucket.org/JeanLucPicard/nxt/commits. If you download and install the Nxt reference software, its source is included in ...\Nxt\src\java\nxt. You can inspect it, and then compile it, yourself before running if you wish.

how can one contribute to NXT?

For example, like this:

Go to the forum nxtforum.org. There are many projects and announcements for jobs and bounties. So many projects are developed, thus you'll certainly found a way to participate.

how can one contribute to NXT?

Links?

Nxt released source when devs said they would Jan 2014. Development branches are private to stop clones launching untested software when they are put on Nxt testnet.

The launch of OS referenced at the start of this was symbolic as the first version of Nxt was a single unobfuscated java class file. Technically, Nxt has never been closed source.

what's the NXT core team doing in marketing the platform to companies?  i think it's time for them to be aggressive in 2015. imo the devs are doing great with the recent work done, but how's marketing?

Define marketing.

like assign a team to go to conferences presenting NXT to potential institutional investors and businesses that could use the platform.  i think NXT is starting to outgrow relying purely on its community, alt forums and word of mouth.

Marketing has always been a weak spot for NXT, tbh.
We have an amazing dev team, but only a so-so marketing team (and I'm one of them, so I'm being stupidly honest here).
Compared to the marketing efforts of Ripple, BTS, Ethereum....NXT just isn't in the same league.

Don't get me wrong, the guys we do have do a great job, there is a lot of good networking going on with businesses, and pretty damn good grassroots marketing, but much of our budget goes on the care and feeding of the dev team, and we do have to be careful with our spend on marketing. This means that most of the NXTers who are busy with marketing activities are working on a volunteer/donation funding basis, usually in addition to our real world jobs. I always ROFLMAO when someone accuses NXT of running packs of paid shills/FUDders......still,  we do a bloody good job with the limited resources available.

Our main strength is definitely in direct contact both with crypto and real world businesses, and we have raised the funds (from a few friendly NXT whales) to be a main sponsor for the upcoming PayExpo in London:
http://www.payexpo.com/
Note: this is not a crypto conference.....it's mainstream finance with the emphasis on payment processing.

There's also a couple of other major projects coming up, using the NXT Monetary System to offer custom blockchain solutions to businesses.

Anyhow, in keeping with NXTs open source/decentralised philosophy....if anyone wants to help out, come on in !
The main NXT forum is here:
https://nxtforum.org/index.php

@Tokeweed (and anyone else who might want to get on board), drop me a PM and we can have a chat.

And, btw, NXT is open source, has been completely so since March of 2014. The current development code is kept closed, but the production code is open.

Guys regularly go to conferences. Damelon, Marc, Salsa... probably more. Nxt is already booked ad the crypto sponsor for payexpo next year, ahead of BTC who also wanted the spot. Barclays was the real world sponsor so not too shabby.

If you look at nxttechnologytree.com, Nxt is just getting started. Cfb, who arguably knows the most detail about Nxts future, see Nxt as selling itself. Nxt is still growing up, it will take months but others will have to be quick to keep up. Core devs that could substantially complete the tree in 8 months rather than 2 years, say, are more important than marketing at this point. But that is not to say marketing isn't important of course  ;D everyone sees things differently, we need more of everything.

Edit: what dave said  ;D

that's what i'm talking about when i mention marketing.  i mean, who knew NXT is the cryptocurrency sponsor at payment expo 2015?  not a lot.

i think the NXT guys should make it a point to let others know.

that's big and something newsworthy.

We have equal need of marketing and fast working devs. They are both crucial to Nxt's success.

FYI, newcomers!
Did you know you can mine NXT (and buy Ardor with it on the Nxt Asset Exchange!) in the Lucky node project? (https://nxtforum.org/index.php?topic=11514.msg221136#msg221136)
Computational and bandwidth requirements are very low - some users run it on a Raspberry Pi.
Run the node 24/7 or as often as you can while you work or play.
Join in with the over 100 nodes that are already in the project.
