Or is all your money lost if your HDD fails and you cannot recover the necessary files?

Once you've backed it up, the balance will always be protected unless you add new addresses to the wallet. Some of the wallet clients add addresses automatically, so you have to be careful about that.
With the current version of Multibit, you can create as many addresses as you think you'll want, then back up the wallet, and you'll be all set. Title: Re: HDD Crash & I Lose Everything?
