Title: We have Subforums!
Post by: SaltySpitoon on January 02, 2014, 07:07:25 AM
Be it the persistance of the community, or my own OCD that made me bug Theymos until we had some sort of organization system, we now have Subforums! Everyone be sure to thank Theymos (even if just in your head because he probably wouldn't be happy about recieving thousands of PMs)

We now have Announcements, which will be used for New Coin Announcements as well as Service announcements.

Mining, which will be for all things mining, technical help, etc.

and Marketplace which is for buying/selling things for Alt Coins.

The top level board that is just general "Alternate Currencies" which you are in now if you are reading this sticky, will be used for General Discussion, Fud, etc.

We thought it was impossible to get subforums, and we managed! If theres one thing to take away from this, its please don't ask for any more. We will make do with what we have and be damn happy!
(*future prediction here* within a few pages, we will have people asking for Giveaways section, and others*) NO

We will have to develop general guidelines for what sections to use for each senario, as well as , which is what will be posted in this thread when we have figured them out.

 ;D

This will definitely help with the clutter.

This should help in making the alt section more legible. :)

I was just thinking about that. I might take on the endevor to move them, however it will be a slow process as I don't have 500 hours to spend in one sitting toward moving everything.

Is it possible to move the current threads to the appropriate subsections? I don't expect a mod to do it, as that would take forever, but can the post starters do it somehow? Alternatively, have the coin creators make new 'official' threads in the announcements section and lock the old threads.

Thank you SaltySpitoon and Theymos!

Yes, people are able to move their own threads to the correct sections, which I do encourage them to do. If you don't know where to move your thread, please ask me as it will help to establish the standard in what topics go where. I'll also move what I see when I have time.

Mmm I'll say pools in the mining section.

Ty salty and congratulations on GM  :)

Thanks honkey

Also, question just posed itself and I'd like to hear your opinions.

Should Pool Announcement threads go in Announcements or Mining?

I initially thought that they would go in Announcements, and that Mining would be for Mining related discussion and support, but I also see them fitting in Mining. Let me know what is on your minds.

I'd say mining. I think announcements should generally be for new coins instead of pools. We already have enough pool spam on here. They don't need even more exposure.

Maybe a coin's announcement thread should be locked, so ONLY announcements can be posted to it, and it can have on the first page a link to a discussion thread where people can respond to the announcements and discuss them and so on?

Or heck, each time the admin posts an announcement to the coins' announcement there they could also create a discussion thread for discussing that specific announcement?

Realdon and Dweeb, opinions noted.

My main concern is clutter. I see Mining as being a place for people to go and actively search for answers to their mining problems, or find information about mining hardware, and my first though is that pool announcements aren't one of those things that would be too difficult to find in any section, so by having them in announcements, its doesn't clutter up slightly more urgent matters.

If Announcements consisted of Coin Announcements and Pool Announcements, the first and second pages should contain all of the current hip and happening coins, and their respective pools.

I'm leaning slightly toward Announcements myself, but of course I value your opinions.

*Edit*

I like the idea actually. Have the official announcement thread for important messages from the devs, and then a general discussion thread for regular happenings. Noted  :)

*Edit again* On second thought, that might lead up to too many threads being created. I think the current general discussion within the coin announcement thread works fine, the Coin Developer can always edit the OP so all important information is consolidated on that post.

Some pretty good ideas here all 'round. The only possibly complication I can see is that the announcement thread will have only information that dev wants to include. All the criticisms (for better or worse) will be separated from the potentially harmful data or misrepresented coin.

Maybe the separation isn't actually very important or I could also easily be misunderstanding the idea.

Another good point, I say we should continue to allow general coin discussion inside of a coin's announcement thread.

So should older coins also be keeping their main threads in announcements?

Also, thinking about this again, I will move threads to their appropriate places, but only the ones on the first few pages (I'm aware that older threads will come forward as I do)

This way the older inactive coins and threads can just be left where they are, and the newer active and still valid ones will be moved to their appropriate spots. And I will continue to move active threads as they pop up until all thats left is new general discussion, and the old inactive threads are burried.

So is there a distinct place to discuss the pools?  You have a few major pools, wemineltc, middlecoin, multipool, hashco.ws and soon to be pool.warz. To me they belong under Alternate cryptocurrencies/mining but in a new sub category maybe called "pools"

If you want further delineation, give each major pool their own sub (once they have qualified though post counts related to their pool). This would keep the main forums form becoming too messy.

Just a thought...

We will have to wait another few years for more subforums, the goal is to make use of what we have.

I'm seriously thinking that Pools should go to Announcements for these reasons:

First, pools could be construed as a service, which does go to Announcements

Second, if you see the pool threads, they say [ANN] Insert Pool. That is generally a good indicator that Announcements is a good place for them

Third, as I mentioned before, the Announcements section should be far more static and not difficult to manually find things. People looking for mining help shouldn't be wading through pool announcements as well.

I kind of picture Mining as being about Mining Discussion, Speculation, Questions, etc.

Unfortunately what was frowned on in making alts only a few months ago has become common practice :(

Excellent to see!

To answer the question from the OP: Pool Announcement threads make more sense in the Mining subforum as far as I'm concerned.

Where are giveaway threads meant to go? In the OP you said there wouldn't be a subforum for them, but they seem to contribute the most clutter of anything and they don't seem to clearly fit in any of the added subforums.

I agree,

A dedicated giveaway section in particular would be the most useful since those threads tend to be short lived by nature.

However, it sounds like keeping the sub sections to three is pretty strongly preferred for now. Perhaps the section that would otherwise get the least traffic would be able to absorb

the giveaway threads without too much trouble?

To Mining.
And I think it should be Developers subforum, cause its alot of tasks are "altcoin specific" so cannot be placed at bitcoin forum. IMHO.

This is great... A subforum for cryptocurrency announcements and then everything else would nearly be sufficient. ANN for coins, ANN for Services, ANN for apps and Technicals would be the way I would do it.

You would be fine in Mining.

I'm just trying to determine if Pools are a service, in which case belonging in the Announcements section, or more related to Mining. I supposed the latter, and will move pools to the Mining section.

Yes, you can also accept Bitcoins. If you have a sales thread, no point in not listing one of your payment options.

Great news for the new year !

And for the OP question, I'd put the pool announcements in the Announcement subforum which could use two tag : [COIN] [TRI] for coin announcements (where TRI stands for the coin trigram) and [POOL] [TRI] for pool announcements (where TRI stands for the coin the poll will mine, and could be replaced by [MULTI] if the pool offers multiple currencies).

What do you think about this naming conventions ?

I think pool announcements should go in the Mining subforum, just to keep things organized, as in if I want to see what new altcoins are announced, I wouldn't have to visually filter the threads marked [ANN] into altcoins and pools.
Or maybe the Announcements subforum should have a guideline to say: Altcoin announcement threads should be tagged [ALT] while pool announcements should be tagged [POOL], if pool announcements were to be posted in the Announcements subforum.

My current preference is for pool announcements to be in the mining section because these threads normally become support threads for using the pools, talking about whether the pool is down and when will problems be fixed etc.

As for how to sort these situations Pool Announcements probably would qualify into both threads but should probably focus into Mining as it focuses primarily on that instead of just as an announcement.

So I agree with you that certain type of announcement would go into that specific type of thread instead of the general one

Thank you Salty & Theymos!

This helps, a lot, at least for miners, marketplace and announcements!

I was hoping for a pinned section for Alt. coin Mandatory Wallet Updates
myself (hint).  It wont be easy to keep track of those any other way!
But whatever.

Seriously though this should help. It's a great addition for all of us.

As for the pool announcements and where to put them, tough call there.

Pools are services, yet seems since we have only a few child boards that
"all things mining" maybe should go into the mining section just to trim
as much away as possible for what will surely will be a pig stuffed fest of
ANN in announcements section. That may also help others get their own
questions and problems resolved since that would drive more traffic there.
Just a thought I had so I edited this for that.

Then again it wont be near as easy to use the mining section for other
mining issues but still it seems to maybe be wiser there than in ANN. The
Announcement section will be severely bloated if we dump mining pool
announcements there. Doesn't really matter to myself, but just for the sake
of evening things out that's my impression on this.

Tough call. Either way is fine by me!

I just dread knowing that this wont help the topic of Mandatory Wallet
Updates. Bummer. That would save everyone a ton of time if we had that.
But whatever. Maybe Salty can get a thread for that Pinned? Please!

Thanks Again  Salty & Theymos! This is sure to help a lot!

Thanks! Really cleaned up the alt-forum!

+1 for a "Giveaways" section. That can get very spammy at times and would clean up the alt forum by 50% at least!  :)

;D thanks great idea to have sub forums. We can easier reach the categories.

Looks like I am different but I liked it more when it was all in one big list. Now I am missing most of the stuff.

This is great news, of course giveaways would have been another good child board but hey, this is still a lot better. Announcements should be for all announcements even though pools and mining are very closely related. I just think that saying a pool announcement goes under mining and not announcements is going to confuse things.

Think that "giveaway" subform must be in.

Please make rule, that giveaway-threads also go in "Announcement"-subforum.
(Or add giveaway subforum.)

(*future prediction here* within a few pages, we will have people asking for Giveaways section, and others*) NO

Fantastic, this should defiantly help keep the Altcoin section more tidy. I also think we could benefit from a faucet/giveaway subsection seeing as almost every new coin has 2 or 3 separate threads devoted to that.

I know what you mean, but as the list got huge it was harder to pick things out. Either way, thanks guys!

Would it be possible to make a Giveaway subforum as well? The main forum is a bit overcrowded by the giveaways.

Too little. If Bitcointalk wants to be the leader of cryptocurrency forums, it needs to do more for the Alts.

Ah, the "yo dawg" phenomenon, a forum within a forum. It funny to see the different forum culture/etiquette between bitcointalk and the altcoin section. Where btctalk is friendly and offers (mature)discussions and debates, the altcoin section is complete opposite. Every new coin is like a religion with fundamentalist followers. Don't you dare ask questions or offer constructive criticism, you trolling hater you. Noobs joining and acting like it's their house. It would be good fun if newbie jail lasted for a week and not four hours ;D

What do you expect from idiots who get involved with coins called Dogecoin, Coinyecoin or Fuckcoin solely because of their name, and continually spout their unfunny, unoriginal meme catchphrases constantly.

A mix of the worst from reddit and 4chan. To bad it's the crowd who turn me off and not the coins.

4channers are usually pretty funny and come up with original material or create the memes in the first place, but I haven't been on there in a while. Better shit to do.

Then why make improvements to the alt forums at all?

I understand BTC is the big boy crypto and this site is named bitcointalk but I think the alts still deserve a little respect.

For some odd reason the moment you guys mentioned 4chan I imagined a bunch of the old vets on bitcointalk and original developers being the people who made the first memes  ;D
The original oldfags back from Black September  ::)

Wow, only 10 people did not read the OP completely, I'm actually surprised  ;D

We will have to develop general guidelines for what sections to use for each senario, as well as , which is what will be posted in this thread when we have figured them out.

 ;D
