Title: BTC mining killing torrent downloads?
Post by: st4rdust on August 27, 2011, 05:19:52 PM
Seems whenever my GUIminer is running, anything I have in uTorrent immediately craps out. It slows to a crawl, and all kinds of other issues pop up, like the "checking" process drawing out forever, if it even progresses at all. Initially I thought this was just a caching issue, because increasing the cache size helped for a brief time, but soon thereafter the problems all came back even with the cache size maxed out.

My net is 3 Mbit so I didn't think that it would bottleneck with these two programs but it seems like they just do not want to run simultaneously. Are these programs simply incompatible or is this a known issue with any kind of a fix?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

are you using the same port as the bitcoin client by any chance?

bitcoin doesnt really mess with torrents at all. There isnt a lot of data changing hands.

My best guess.. is you have a half open problem.. but that really shouldnt slow you down that much.. do you use tcpz?

You do realize that bitcoin is very techie.. so quite a few people here probably torrent.. if there was a big problem it would be well known.

I havent noticed a dang thing

I figured there couldn't be THAT much data being exchanged from my mining client, but whatever it is, it really messes with my uTorrent program.

My torrents and BTC miners are both on seperate ports, however even if they were on the same port I just can't see how these two programs could overwhelm each other with the kind of bandwidth available to them.

I frequently fire up utorrent while using 2 miners in GUIminer. I haven't seen a performance issue at all.
I also use news groups and when downloading from an nzb I have to throttle it a bit but that's a whole different monster.

It's the exact opposite for me. I run two miners as well but I have to turn off the first one while I'm using this PC for anything other than just mining, or else it will freeze up. Granted, both of my GPUs are overclocked 30%, so that may be the reason for the freeze.

The uTorrent problem may have to do with the 100% CPU usage. If you have a multicore CPU try limiting your miner to only some of them. There is a checkbox in GUI miner.

As for freezing up, simply choose a less aggressive OC on the card that feeds your monitor. If you account for all the downtime, this will actually make you more bitcoins. There is also a particular problem with Flash player while mining, search the forum for the cure.
