I'm seeing some posts in Twitter about BitPay being hacked. Over $80,000,000 worth of bitcoin gone. Can anyone confirm this?

If this is true that's terrible when the new years was starting off so well. Shit like this will discredit bitcoin more than countries banning it.

Just check the address history , some of those 80 000 000 were transferred a long time ago from it.
Also 82 mils is the total sum the address ever received , not the sum that it was in it .

Please, enlighten us all: how does the blockchain confirm the rumor?

You cant withdraw from bitpay, they send you your coins when they can do it, for example, the blockchain's url up here.

What would make one thing they were "hacked" and BTC being stolen? That account looks just the same like any exchange accounts, etc. Nothing to see here, move along.

Yes, it should change to "GOOD NEWS: bitpay has not been hacked?" as this is the overall consensus on the twitter-sphere the past 5 minutes.

Bitpay have no any official information on it and as well as that blockchain information is nothing. Its just securing bitcoin. So don't just troll.

I think that's more feesbile. A lot of the stuff that is being typed on that account right now doesn't seem like something that someone with his alleged experience and knowledge would be saying. Next thing you know, he will claim MTGOX and Cryptsy were in on it too.  :o

It's sad but inevitable that people will stoop to these dirty tricks and fake news campaigns.

I hope those responsible are made to face the consequences.

thebitcoinnews.co.uk should be questioned on their reporting ethic at least.

As for the guy who started this thread +1 IMO.  It helped me steer round the BS when the link was posted on btc-e seemed to calm alot of nerves.

This is why i posted here to see if the news was real. People here know a great deal more than me. And the only reason I wanted to know is so I could sell some coins and pick them back up in a few hours at a lower price

honest mistake.  Unfortunately the market manipulators prey on that and when a rumor get out of hand it can have significant financial consequences.

bitpay.com is one of the major players and tony is one of the good guys.  Lots of ney sayers would love to see a successful bitcoin business fail.

Fortunately it was nipped in the bud. 

Hopefully they catch the guy who started the rumor.
