Title: Altcoins - which do you like?
Post by: StevoTC on January 05, 2014, 09:10:07 PM
So, my first post on this forum and apparently there are a number of different requirements before I'm allowed to post elsewhere.

I guess I should start by telling you that I missed out on the BTC train a year or two ago. In fact, I lost around 10 coins on an old mobile that I threw away.

I've recently found that I'm a fan of Worldcoin. I like a few other coins too but I see a lot of the others are used for pumping. Worldcoin has a team behind it and they are also developing  Scharmbeck.

I like Worldcoin  ;D

What coin do you like? What coin do you mine?

Worldcoin is a sleeping giant. Scharmbeck is a game changer.

I've recently started with dogecoin. I think there's a time and place for serious business, but for a beginner I like the laid-back attitude the dogecoin community has. Plus, at least in the short term, efficiency has been going up while price has been going down. Hopefully we can get to the moon soon.

Unless an Altcoin brings something radically new and innovative to the table then it's probably not worth bothering with.  You're likely better off sticking to the more established Alts, like:

Litecoin
Peercoin
Namecoin

I'd say they're most likely the "big 3", although some would argue for Primecoin and Novacoin too.

//EDIT:  Since this post was made two years ago, I'd now throw in Qora and Burst.

I like Dogecoins, because if they rose to $0.25, you could make a damn sight of money if you were in from the start.

Dogecoin
Earthcoin
Mintcoin
Namecoin
Peercoin

are my absolute favs. These have IMHO good concepts, acceptance, support, and a great community behind them.

I like only coin which offer some really unique and which have a great community.
Therefore I mainly support NXT, NEM, Ethereum and BitcoinDark besides Bitcoin.

Gaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!

I'd have a hard time getting over this I think.  As far as altcoins go, I like DOGE and I have no rationale for it other than I like not having to use fractions and also the quick confirmation time.  I don't do any mining as I'm not into crypto that seriously.  But it's pretty much just bitcoin for me.

Dogecoin, Namecoin, and Litecoin are my favorites.  Dogecoin has a great community and grassroots effort and Litecoin is Bitcoin's silver.  Namecoin has some interesting potential.

Yeah, I think that's another reason why I like DOGE.  Their community is a friendly one and most of them seem genuinely nice and appear to be trying to get their coin used for real transactions.  I don't know if they're ever going to see mainstream acceptance but who knows.  It's a good coin and it's held its value thus far.

DASH has been on an upturn the past few days. Not saying that means anything either way but anyone who had some a few days ago should be very happy today.

I am a big fan of Dogecoin and Bitcoin.

I bought 1000 Dogecoin before the price fell to 30 satoshi (was 50 satoshi). However, before then, they were good and I think that they are likely to go back up again.

I'll go first.

My current portfolio:
https://i.imgur.com/Dts7oWp.png

Why I chose each coin:
BTC (Bitcoin) - Network Effect; Most Secure PoW Currency; Many Wallets and Services
bitBTC (Bitshares) - Derivative of Bitcoin
BTS (Bitshares) - Decentralized Exchange; Derivative Trading; User Issued Assets; Fast Confirmation Times; Dynamic Account Permissions (improved multi signature addresses); Decentralized Referral Program; Stakeholder Approved Project Funding; Readable Account Names; Voting
LTC (Litecoin) - Network Effect; More Wallets and Services Than Most Cryptocurrencies
BKS (BlockShares) - Decentralized Exchange; Bitcoin Dividends
NSR (Nushares) - Market Pegged FIAT Cryptocurrencies; Pays PPC Dividends
bitGOLD (Bitshares) - Derivative of Gold; Traditional "Safe Haven"; FIAT/Cryptocurrency/Inflation Hedge
SJCX (Storj) - Decentralized Data Storage
OBITS (Open Ledger) - Bitshares On/Off Ramp; Order book and reserves on the blockchain for easy auditing; Sharebot; Debit Card
bitSILVER (Bitshares) - Derivative of  Silver; Modern "Safe Haven"; FIAT/Cryptocurrency/Inflation Hedge
NXT (Nxt) - Asset Exchange; Marketplace; Monetary System; Private Messaging; Alias System; Instant DEX; Multigateway
XMR (Monero) - Ring Signatures; Anonymity; A nice army of shills on BCT, which makes for good exposure
MAID (Maidsafe) - Decentralized Data Storage; Secure Log In
UNITY (SuperNet) - Multi-Cryptocurrency Wallet; Instant DEX; Multigateway; Telepods; Decentralized Market Decentralized Dice/Poker
SIA (Siacoin) - Decentralized Storage
XCR (Crypti) - Decentralized Javascript Programs

Why I own more Bitcoin than anything else:
I see it as being less risky than alternative currencies. It has a strong network effect (which dwarfs all alternative cryptocurrencies combined), the strongest (it's not even close) liquidity and volume, and a solid list of services, wallets, etc...

Why I own more coins from "long established" cryptocurrencies (or will eventually own.. my portfolio isn't exactly the way I'd like it right now):
I think that network effects are very powerful, and as a community grows so does a coin's utility, volume, liquidity, word of mouth, etc..

Why is each coin (except for Bitcoin) less thank 6% of my portfolio?
I see alternative cryptocurrencies as being quite risky, and I can't quite put my finger on exactly which ones will be the most valuable in the future. I prefer to pick general industry leaders that have a chance of becoming big time, and investing a small percentage in each one.

I personally would only invest in very few cryptocurrencies purely for the reason of them having a network effect. Those currencies would probably be BTC, LTC, PPC, and DOGE. Network effect drops off dramatically as you go to each lower tier. Bitcoin has much more network effect than the closest 3 coins combined. It is Bitcoin that is in the news all day and every day.

Most of the alternative cryptocurrencies I have chosen have (or are in the process) of innovating in some way. I try to stay away from copy and paste coins, and when I do buy copy and paste coins.. I only buy them in the "top tier" of network effects (see above).

I also think a fair release is pretty important, along with a solid set of active developers that back the project. Without a fair release the crypto enthusiasts can't get behind it- there is maybe only a couple exceptions I can think of. I posit crypto enthusiasts played a large role in Bitcoin's success. Also, without solid, dedicated, and active developers a cryptocurrency is doomed before it is launched.

I see long term value in Ethereum, but I did not invest in the IPO and expect the price to come back down to earth eventually. You will notice I invested in a similar project Crypti, which is much more undervalued at the moment. I generally stay away from IPO coins and new releases for around a year to see how the price is moving, the coin is developing, and how the community develops. Most coins in my portfolio I only purchased after long downtrends.

I currently have my portfolio weighted more heavily towards innovations having to do with decentralized exchanges than any other feature. I am not sure if this will change. I also see a lot of value in decentralized programming languages and data storage.

Edit: I recently sold my XRP because I realized there isn't a downloadable client any more and you have to register your identity. I might replace that part of my portfolio with Stellar, but at the moment I simply left it in Bitcoin.

My favourites are those coins what I can buy low and then sell high a few days/hours later :).

More seriously: NXT, XRP, XMR... and of course DOGE, but that's only a hobby :).

Bitcoin investing is also gambling right now!
Early adopters and miners now have a biggest cake.
Now we newcomers have chance getting those coins like xmr sdc dash ..

For me all altcoins are sort of doomed and completely exposed to price manipulation, so I really have a grim view of the scene. Plus 99% of them are just plain scamcoins.

With that being I currently hold Digibyte, for me it's the only one that I can trust into being a serious long term project with a great community (it was its 2 year anniversary just some days ago).

I have participated in the IOTA crowdsale. I think this coin can really be a huge success. Trading will start in February. Reasons why I think it’s getting successful:
-well known dev-team with Come-from-Beyond
-First Altcoin without a Blockchain
-Token for the Internet of Things
-No fees, good for micropayments

There are many altcoins and some people just support one of them randomly because they happen to invest in that particular coin but I believe for a coin to be worth something it's important that the coin is useful in something, of course a supportive community and active devs is an important aspect but if the coin is plain useless if it doesn't bring anything new to the table, why would people use it? You have bitcoin and a few other stable altcoins, why would anyone pick your new altcoin if it has the same features and it's not being used more.

Dogecoin does have a great community but it seems to be losing a little steam. GoldCoin is probably the most undervalued altcoin on the market at this time. Growing community, open workforce, and increasingly scarce. Plus our developer is a Cisco Systems engineer. :)
