Title: Tips needed on best mining software and setup: Win 8 + 2 Nvidia cards
Post by: Hanna on January 07, 2014, 01:44:33 PM
I live in London, so I realise it's not profitable to mine - but I want to try it anyway...

My desktop machine happens to have two Nvidia cards. Model GT 430 , nothing special.

Can I mine anything at all with this machine, and in that case, what mining software do you recommend?

I tried GPUminer but I was only able to mine with one of the cards - don't know why.

I also tried Bitminter's client. It mined a bit faster than GPU miner, but the cards got a bit hot. Had to take out a PCI card that obstructed the airflow.

What is a "Cuda miner" and is this what I should go for, since it's dedicated to Nvidia? If so, which is the best and where do I get it?

I could really do with some advice! Hope somebody can point me in the right direction?

Are you saying that there is no point mining AT ALL unless I buy a dedicated mining rig?

I'm not in the market for that right now. Plus it seems to me, anyone doing that should live in a country with cheap energy to get really good value.
Or scavenge off electricity at work, or something like that.
Right?

well it's like this,
nvidia gpu-s really suck at mining. you can buy some ATI radeon hd7950/7970/7970 an mine some LTC for example and change them to BTC. small steps but it's something.

you are right about that, there is no point mining unless you buy a dedicated mining gear.
btc difficulty is so high right now that with 200GH miner you will earn 0.06btc/day and with every diff jump you will earn less and less.
so 200gh is minimum to start right now, everything below that is worthless.
this is good miner for fair price https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=379819.0
so think about it.

about electricity,
there is some point in mining when miner will suck more electricity than he can earn btc/$ and then you sell it on ebay usually for more than you pay for it.
till then you will earn a nice amount of btc.
