It is my understanding that you need very powerful machines to mine bitcoins - sometimes costing you more in electricity to mine the coins then the coins you get in return.  Why would this at all be profitable?  Maybe I'm missing something.

you are right, an android phone is not the perfect device for bitcoin mining  :)
but you can get something out of it if you go for litecoin.  By the way, I am not an expert at all on mining.
I am just a developer who is just trying to prove that mining does work on an android phone (few others others have done it already).
I leave it to the experts to decide if it is profitable at all.

thanks

Even litecoin mining is not going to be profitable at all on an android device. Nice concept though, I give you props.

Too little cpu power, too little battery charge...

I don't think this was intended to be a hardcore miner, whether it be for bitcoins, litecoins, or any other cryptocurrency to make money.

It's fun to test out though, and you can say you are mining bitcoins/altcoins on your Android device!

No point. Except, you could brag to your friends that you actually mined on your phone. But, it wont be beneficial to actually mine them from your android.

Android is too weak to mine bitcoin or litecoin

anything is possible but I would say that given the amount of power its going to take to keep the thing running, you would have to have it plugged into the power supply unit (cable) most of the time if you don't want your battery dead after a short while.

Would be interesting to make a cryptocurrency based on GPS coordinates, that way it is limited to mobile-only devices.

I mean, until someone retrofits their ASIC or GPU farm into their van as a wardriving altcoin chugging machine.

although it could eventually wear out your hardware a bit resulting in a lack of profit, the concept is awesome and its cool to be able to use even your phone for hashing power

The impression I have from my research is that mining on mobile devices is a bad idea. This includes laptops, and of course, tablets and phones. These devices are not really built for long periods of sustained heat, and the components are likely to start failing pretty soon. This is particularly a problem as they are much less modular than desktops, and replacing the CPU or GPU on a mobile device is basically impossible.
