Title: Mining Pool BS
Post by: Gobc on January 08, 2014, 06:24:19 AM
Hi All,

I have a question regarding mining pools and their payout schemes.

I've started mining litecoins about a month ago, and signed on to a mining pool. Before doing this I checked to see what my expected payout would be through a typical mining calculator and am pleased to say that the coins earned through this pool was typical to what the calculator predicted.

However, I have now begun to mine altcoins and sell them on exchanges. However I'm finding virtually every mining pool I sign up for, my earnings are about 1/10th of what a calculator should predict. Because of this, I generally mine altcoins that I can solomine.

Can anyone offer an explanation for this?

Did you input the correct mining difficulty to your calculator?

absolutely.

Are you mining with cgminer? Please make sure that you have a zero at the HW in the display, if not then you have hardware errors and all your shares is not accounted for. The mining rate you see in the cgmniner window should be fairly close to the rate the pool reports on their dashboard.

Also, make sure you have the latest version, the right miner etc.

I've made sure all these things are correct. However I do notice that the mining pool HW is usually different that what CGminer is showing me. However in my original litecoin mining pool, they said that the reported hast rate is only an estimate and should not be relied upon.

i said, hey
i give you the answer, your earnings are about 1/10th because " score += exp(t/C) "
you donate me some btc ;D

What altcoins are you mining? Litecoin is typically a little bit more stable than many altcoins, but 1/10th seems a bit low. Also, I don't know of any mining pools that report your HW error rate. Are you able to post a screen shot of your CGMiner after it has been running a while?

Here are two screenshots of CG miner. Note that one of the screenshots is through a remote connection which is why the GPU temps aren't visible.

Here is an example of my problem. I've been mining bitbars. According to a mining calculator, at 2100 kh/s I should make 0.0077922 btb/hr. From the mining pool, i only made 0.00479. Fkn half! Aside from the litecoin and feathercoin pools that I originally tried, all mining pools rip me off. I don't know why. I appreciate your response though.

It's possible the pool is just taking half your bitbars.  Some altcoins have could rapid difficulty increases when multipool switches to them, that could be another explanation.

making an estimate on the altcoins can be very difficult..

most altcoins have as very fast difficulty retarget..for example diamond coin change difficulty every minute!
so by the time you calculate your estimate the difficulty changes and your calculations are not more valid.

with litecoin is different because if I'm not wrong difficulty changes every 3 day, so the estimate done by the calculator is accurate

If you think the difficulty is changing very fast you should dump difficulty and time for each block in the past x days and integrate that way.  I suppose fast difficulty changes would affect the pool's payout based on luck a lot, but I haven't done the math.
