Why are you here? If you're here for some coin other than Bitcoin which one is it?

Well the polling options aren’t perfect. I came here for Bitcoin, but quickly gained interest in others (LTC, FTC mainly).

A lot of the newbs tend to come here by whatever new alt coin is hyped up that they've heard about (Doge, Kanye etc).

Help me change the poll. What option would you add without adding every altcoin in existence (the poll would be too long and always incomplete).

You want to mine something without buying any new equipment, correct? Bitcoin needs special equipment to mine at this point but most of the scrypt coins don't. I would look at the coins with a favorable exchange rate to btc. The economy in Bitcoin is more mature than the altcoin economies (meaning - you can buy more stuff with Bitcoin). It might be a good option for you to mine something else and exchange for Bitcoin so you can buy stuff.

thank you for replying.
no i can invest in mining, but i dont have too much money.
yeah as i am minin protoshares, prime and as well coinyewest, so i will exchange them for btc later.
the issue is that they are mining very slowly because of pc mining.

I dunno; it's a hard poll to create. Maybe a 'any/all cryptocurrencies' option. A lot of people just jump on pump and dumps until they're unprofitable to mine, so maybe 'pump and dump shitcoin' option  ;D.

You might want to consider investing small amounts in buying btc or ltc instead of mining. Eventually they will appreciate in value and you will make money. When you mine there are so many things to consider that you may end up losing money no matter what you do.

Think its too hard to mine Bitcoins so alternatives might be better.
CGWatcher also says some are way more profitable then BC.

I have an interest in a lot of them, but right now (besides BTC itself, of course) I have been mostly interested in PTS (protoshares) and XRP (ripples).

I am well aware (having been on this forum long before registering) that XRP generates hostility from most (ok, well, many, anyway) of the people here, but I think it has potential. Yes, I know that it is almost the polar opposite of BTC. But, I like both -- what can I tell you.

I started with DogeCoin as my first cryptocoin.  I'm having fun mining various coins on my lowly ATI 7750 card (~140 kh/s).  So far I'm up to 0.3 BTC after mining DogeCoin, CatCoin, MoonCoin, and now CoinyeCoin.  I wish I could get into actual Bitcoin mining but the cost of entry is so high with returns that are so low.

ROFL that's a fun way to look at it.

Bitcoin is the world leader or the dollar. Litecoin is like Euros, ProtoShares would be Yen and Tenebrix would be the Zimbabwean dollar.

The bitcoin ship has sailed entirely, there's really no money to be made off them; save market speculation.  Even that's pointless unless you have a LOT of capital, which no one pursuing cryptocurrencies really has: we're all after the fountain of youth.

I sit around and watch the boards and look for new coins coming out and look for hype, news, and allocate my measly 650 k/hash (7950 & cpu) accordingly.  mined 500k dogecoins before the difficulty and popularity sky rocketed, now I watch the market for them very closely.  I bought a million of them at 26 satoshis, so I'm up quite a bit at the moment.

besides all that I recently purchased the intelligent investor and  security analysis and I am learning everything I can about stocks, options, and futures.  I have a 1,000 dollar stock portfolio which I monitor daily and I've seen some success with my tiny amount of capital.

I think capitalism is a beautiful thing.  All of us have the opportunity to make all the money in the world, all we need is a little bit of capital.  Armed with nothing but knowledge, moderation, and restraint 1,000 can become 10,000 dollars, or even 100,000 dollars.  I would advise everyone to never be intimidated by anything and search out the profit and the money of the economy.  That's what got me into real finance and that's also what got me into cryptocurrencies.

That was well said. I would agree that the cost of entry into Bitcoin is very high for mining. For people into speculating, like miners are, choosing the correct altcoin is a difficult task. Choosing travels along a spectrum very similar to any investment trading. Bitcoin comes with less reward but is more a proven investment. Dogecoin may have had a greater reward but comes with a proportionally increased risk.

Came for LiteCoin, staying for WorldCoin

Although I've done best in the  two days I mined lottocoin just after launch - converted at cryptsy to btc then wdc first few hours of listing. Hope I can match that profitability again it was phenomenal. Basically ended up with a months worth of WorldCoin (what I would mine at my hash rate) in two days.

I'm here to mine and speculate on some alts, but mostly to convert into BTC and enjoy the ride.

When I read up about Ripple, and how it is all sold or handed out by one "for profit" I instantly lost interest, I'd rather invest in fiat or a precious metal. Also the current market cap is not real because only a small % has been released into circulation.

What's wrong with profit?  The concept is awesome, although the UI currently needs a lot of work.  Certainly you wouldn't put all that work into it and expect to live off of warm fuzzies

Nothing is wrong with profit, but when one entity has complete control over the release and/or minting of a currency, well that's is the same as fiat anyway, but at least some countries have a slightly operating democracy. To me Ripple is just 100% premined with the only excuse to do so is to eradicate security problems. I'm not sold on it but that's just my opinion.

What is so awesome about the concept?

The concept entry is too high is pretty dumb. Bitcoin is most sucessfull, and probably only coin long term here, this is why Bitcoin is most valued.

Not everybody has to be a BTC miner. You can make your BTC mining other coins like this guy did. Any coins that have any longevity will eventually become unprofitable to small-time miners, so you just move on to another and trade the coins you make for BTC and it's essentially the same.

Not everybody needs to mine at all. People can just buy coins. If you were going to just buy coins instead of mining which one would you buy? If you can't justify buying a coin to use as money for purchases why mine it at all? I don't think overstock.com will be accepting doge anytime soon.

Exactly, that's why the only use of these coins is to pump and dump them. Get in early and nine whilst it's still profitable and then sell or swap for a useful currency like BTC.

Fascinating, very few new members are here for just Bitcoin. If the layout of this forum followed the direction of new membership then there would be a single small section named Bitcoin and the rest of the forum would be alternate cryptocurrencies.

I would like as many people as possible to vote. The alternate cryptocurrencies subsection just recently got sub forums. I guess management realizes how big a draw that section is.

I got seriously into bitcoin at the beginning of oct 2013. I also got into litecoin @ the same time. I really like litecoin because the dev is very transparent, works for coinbase, and his brother is the CEO of BTC China. I'm hoping LTC gets integrated with Mt. Gox soon, which will set off its adoption on bitstamp, coinbase, etc. I truly believe the future will contain many crypto's and BTC and litecoin will be the top 2.

I'm pretty new to actually buying cryptocurrencies, although I've been aware of bitcoin and the general mechanics of its operation for a while. I knew about it when it was at prices I don't even want to think about now actually, and almost bought in until mtgox crashed that first time from like 30 to 1. Being only an outside observer I wrote it off as a brilliant idea that wouldn't take off without a more refined iteration, or damaged goods. I can't kick myself too hard because I was a lot younger and bitcoin (still not easily accessible for most peoples' tech level) was a lot harder to buy then it seemed.

Anyway, I've gotten into dogecoin for fun and am totally enthralled by this whole world of cryptocurrencies (mostly doge and BTC at the moment). I wanted to join this forum because to mostly read information posted by people who know a lot more than me by virtue of experience. I am also excited by the vast opportunities that exist to solve problems or advance specific parts of such a fast growing phenomenon. I think that cryptocurrencies will produce an amount of value exponentially greater than where we stand now and the chance to be part of that is exciting!

I don't know that you can discount it that easily. People feel disconnected from Bitcoin because of the reward issue. That needs to be solved before people will flock to Bitcoin again.

Bitcoin and Ripple are both exciting crypto currencies! Bitcoin beeing the first, which has most of the media attention, and Ripple with a different approach, which might be more suiteable for a mainstream currency to be widely adopted. I strongly believe that there is a huge need for an easy to use online currency, so let's see what 2014 brings...

I'm here for alt coins, and that's about it.

BTC's are too hard/expensive to mine and I'm really just into it because it a fun hobby.  If I happen to make some extra dough, that's a bonus, but not required.  It reminds me a lot of standard currency exchanges that I used to trade with but much more volatile.

I've noticed that many new users are choosing coins to support for every reason except philosophical. Very few people seem to understand the greater sociological aspects of Bitcoin. That's not necessarily a bad thing, just an observation.

When questioning why newbs choose a particular currency their answers seem to be something like it's 'unique' or 'it has potential'. When questioned further all they can usually come up with is 'it's not pre-mined' or 'was only pre-mined a little bit', and it has a 'good community/devs' behind it, blah blah blah. These things usually all turn out to be hyperbole or bs anyway.

True but I don't think many people walking the earth really understand the ramifications of taking control of money away from government. Even the ancient Roman Empire understood that money is used to control military might and military might controls the empire. If we take the control of money away from governments they can no longer control us. Perhaps I'm the only one that believes that as the reason to use Bitcoin.

I suppose it's possible to accomplish that using different coins (maybe one per country) but it would probably be easier using one. Bitcoin is gaining recognition and has a head start. That might change and the real world coin springs up later. It could also be true that the great unwashed masses with inferior mental cognizance need to be controlled and want nothing to do with taking funds away from government.

What makes them crap and Bitcoin not crap? Aren't they all basically the same with different infrastructures supporting them? Sure most of the alts are scrypt but that isn't a flaw. Litecoin actually corrects some of the built in problems with Bitcoin.

This poll will never give you accurate results because of the following reasons:

- The title that seems to be asking a leading question.

- The fact that bitcoin only is just one option in the poll.

- The fact that this is in the newbie section. I understand this may be by design. You just want noobs to vote. But it doesn't give you the true picture of the community as a whole. Of course noobs are going to get into alts because a) they're obsessed with mining b) everyone is telling them the bitcoin boat has sailed.

Finally this:

Help me change the poll. What option would you add without adding every altcoin in existence (the poll would be too long and always incomplete).

The most obvious option is "I came here for bitcoin but later got interested in alts too". 98% will vote for that option.

You're right. That is by design. I didn't want people to feel pressured to vote for Bitcoin simply because they are at a Bitcoin forum. Nonbelievers here can be attacked pretty severely for their lack of Bitcoin faith. This place is worse than a Linux forum. Have you ever attempted to say you use Windows at a Linux forum. You may as well slit your own throat.

No, "I came here for bitcoin but later got interested in alts too" won't work. I don't want ANY old Bitcoin users to skew the vote. I already know how many old users are into alts. Their posts are in the alt coin subsection. I don't want to know what they did "later". I want new people with just a few posts to tell me why they registered. If you voted please remove it because you are skewing the results.

It's a false assumption that 98% of the current members of this forum are interested in altcoins.

I didn't vote. The reason I said you should add that option is that Bitcoin is the most high profile of all crypto currencies. Everyone hears about bitcoin first and then about alt coins. It is natural if you think about it.

Bitcoin is now hard to mine for newbies and expensive to buy, so I'm starting with alt coins. Some forks like doge shows great results in short period of time as for miners or to small investors, but I don't think it'll be very profitable in long term.

The only way I see to currently get returns on bitcoins is via altcoin tradeing.

It doesn't matter what you belive will happen on BTC vs altcoin in the long run, we live now. Current returns on altcoins vs BTC are insane and there is no other way that can double one bitcoin faster. (regardless of BTC/USD)  The (unlikely) risk of a bitcoin-killer is here and the bitcoin protocoll would never able to adapt fast enough. It's 100% impossible that f.e we will ever see PoS in bitcoin since there are far to many people (miners) interrested in keeping it the way it is.

Ignoring altcoins is like igoring the most innovative part of crypto. People were able to see the potential of bitcoin, but now some of those are so in love with bitcoin that they can't see the potential in altcoins. Altcoins don't need bitcoiners to buy them, there are sill enough people left that haven't heard of crypto yet.

I'm just the opposite, I thought almost all answers would be "Bitcoin only" considering this is a Bitcoin forum. The mods and users here take a pretty dim view of altcoins. Altcoin threads in every other section but "Alternate cryptocurrencies" are reported and moved right away. The early adopter crowd (hero members) are horny to get as much for their coins as possible so they push Bitcoin like preachers push Jesus. I've seen people attacked for just mentioning an altcoin in a thread without making fun of it. I agree that altcoins can't just be ignored. Obviously, according to the poll, altcoins are a big reason people are coming here.

Pretty much all other coins but Bitcoin.

When I got it, Litecoin was just launched a week or two prior. Even then, before ASIC came out for Bitcoin it was too far gone for me to mine effectively. So I did my mining in Litecoin and some other Alt coins that popped up along the way and that is where I wills stay.

Cheers

Bitcoin has turned into the bank you have to go to if you want to buy altcoins

Interesting, when the thread was in the newbies section the "other coin" option was the clear winner. In main discussion Bitcoin is winning which means newbies are no longer the only voters. I still believe newbies are not here for Bitcoin anymore.

There's often no route from fiat --> altcoin, instead you have to go from fiat --> bitcoin --> altcoin

I get it. You can't directly buy altcoins but you can always trade for Bitcoin. So Bitcoin only matters in so much as it helps get the altcoins. Interesting.

Think BIG PICTURE.  These coins are really all about Freedom - the ability to earn and spend how you choose without the .gov's of the world pointing guns at you and telling you what you must do in order to stay out of jail or get a baton cracked upside your head.

Think about that.  Freedom to do what you please with what you earn and what you own.

This is a world wide game changer.  And it has only just begun...

Yes, Bitcoin was supposed to be that. Some altcoin may need to fill that role. There is talk of blacklists, the lead dev and major Bitcoin business owners are crawling in bed with government agencies. Bitcoin may have only been the necessary first step to ensure these mistakes are not repeated.
