I am in the process of outfitting a shipping container with 8 x 42U rack. Each rack will have 8 servers inside with 6 GPU per server. In the interest of cooling, we have a contained hot side and cold side.  We extract the hot air with 10 extraction fans and cool the inflow fresh air with 10 coil fans. The container is 20 feet in length with the server racks running directly down the center with the front facing the cold side and back facing the hot side. Anyone have any advice or potential warnings for our new design concept?

Now if this included water cooling, that would be pretty neat.

Since it's this big, you could just tube water through the whole container, but disposing of the hot water and cooling it off is a problem.

Can we see pictures, please? And what kind of hardware are you using? (cpu/mainboard ). Was thinking of setting up racks of GPUs myself, but have them hosted.

investing in a gpu farm of this scale is not profitable because scrypt asics will come out by the time you are setup and you will never make roi.

if i were you i would take your $100,000 and buy scrypt asics

+1 on the water-cooled solution.  Shipping containers get hot with nothing in them to start out with.  They are weather sealed and water tight so you can count out good ventilation unless you make vents.  To go with Air cooled solution you can pretty much take a 50 cal machine gun and make the thing vent better. Or better yet, nix the whole shipping container solution.  Or if you go geothermal and have the container in the ground and supply ventilation plus water cooled then you have something usable.

That's about 100kW of heat you have to get rid off. How much air do the proposed fans move?  From that, one could calculate the temperature diff between intake and exhaust, and see if it is feasible.

I meant unprofitable in the sense that the coin revenue has become less than the current electricity cost.

exactly. that is why i have no problem buying more gpus right now, (if i can find them for less than my first born child)

because they are going up in value and will probably even rise once all the lemmings try to start mining.

i bet we will see $250-300 5850s in the future.

we are already seeing $150-175 for 5850s
and $300-400 for 7950s
