Title: Litecoin Motherboard - January '14
Post by: granitepeaker on January 10, 2014, 08:32:34 PM
I'm going to be using a Cooler Master HAF XB Case or maybe the new HAF XB EVO.  Which would be better?
Probably only going to start with one or two R9 290s, and max the case out with 3-ish.
What's the best altcoin miner motherboard that one can buy today below $150.  Factoring in power consumption and hash rate.

Here are just a few that have been popping up in my search results, but am open to other suggestions. It would also be nice to remotely control it since I may be leaving the miner at work.

GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
Gigabyte AMD FM2+/FM2 AMP-UP Audio OP-AMP USB DAP-UP UEFI DualBIOS ATX Motherboard GA-G1.Sniper A88X
Gigabyte AMD FM2+/FM2 A88X Dual-Link DVI D-Sub Triple Monitor ATX Motherboard GA-F2A88X-D3H
Asrock H61 Pro BTC - but impossible to find?
ASUS P8Z77-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z77

I'm a fan of this one: GA-970A-UD3

You can get 5 cards on the board pretty easily.

I have this case with 2 R9 290's in them. The third one will not fit in my opinion. I have the quite expensive Asus Z87 Deluxe for this case. But it's my personal computer, that's why I stuck a nice mobo into a nice box. My other rigs use Asus A88X Pro AMD mobos. They are half price of the Asus Z87 Deluxe and enough for mining.

XAF is a nice case buddy :)
I have asrock extreme 4 2 gpus there but hosted 3 with proper cooling

You hit the point, cooling. Even those two GPU's in the case do get quite hot. I have 6 proper fans cooling the case. And still, I am leaving my windows open and not heating the room, otherwise GPU 0 will heat up above 85 degrees Celsius. My other rigs are in a cooled air conditioned room @ 18 degrees in open cases.

Would the HAF XB Evo be better then the HAF XB?  Primary difference being the Xtraflo 120mm fans?  I think the cases are about the same price.  Does anyone know of a link for the best Coolermaster HAF cooling setups specific to mining?  I've never done any liquid cooling setups or radiator and not sure if that's cost effective?  I want a case because I'm going to leave the miner at my work. I can probably leave at least one side of it off if need be.  Super quiet fans would be a perk, I'd pay extra for the best fans available.

Gigabyte 970 D3P. It's only $90, and I can personally confirm it will run 5 GPUs.

This mobo certainly looks cool, but where in the world does one buy one?  I've searched everywhere.

How do you power of you have more than 3 GPUs?
Do you use 1600 W? 1200 W for 280s or even 290s sounds just enough for 3, but not 4 or 5.
And the costs....
sounds cheaper to just build 2 rigs with a mobo for 2 GPUs and lower watt PSU.?

I have this board and I can't get more than 3 going at once.  Whats your secret?
